The kinetics of the unimolecular isomerization reaction[Formula: see text]have been studied. The ΔH≠ values in kcal mol−1 are 36.8 ± 2.0 (M = M′ = Mn ), 46.8 ± 0.5 (M = M′ = Re ), 39.2 ± 2.8 (M = Mn, M′ = Re ). The mechanism of the rearrangement is discussed.

An dezerebrierten Katzen wurde ein zentraler Ischiadicusstumpf mit Kondensatorentladungen erregt und nach der Lapicqueschen Methode die Chronaxie einerseits in Versuchen bestimmt, in denen ein bestimmtes Ausmas der Hemmung des ipsilateralen Quadricepstonus als Rheobase angenommen wurde („Hemmungschronaxie”), andererseits in Versuchen, in denen eine bestimmte Starke der Ruckprallkontraktion als Rheobase diente („Rebound-Chronaxie“). Fur die afferenten Ischiadicusfasern, welche reflektorisch nur eine schwache Tonushemmung auslosten, fanden wir durchschnittlich eine Chronaxie von 0,08σ (Grenzwerte 0,05–0,15 σ), wahlten wir dagegen eine mittelstarke Rebound-Kontraktion als Rheobase, so fanden wir fur die Chronaxie einen mittleren Wert von 0,05 σ (0,007–0,09σ). Die Chronaxie der erst durchstarkere Reize erregbaren hemmenden Fasern last sich wegen der Unscharfe der Schwelle experimentell nicht bestimmen, aber die bei Rebound-Chronaxiebestimmungen erhaltenen Kurven zeigen, das auch bei kraftigen Hemmungen, denen ein Rebound folgt, die Chronaxie der hemmenden afferenten Fasern verschieden ist von der Chronaxie der den Rebound auslosenden Fasern. Die Rebound-Chronaxie war in einzelnen Versuchen kurzer, in anderen aber langer als die Chronaxie der bei den gleichen Reizungen erregten hemmenden Fasern. An einem besonders gunstigen Praparat, bei dem auch bei kraftigen Hemmungen die Hemmungschronaxie langer war als die Rebound-Chronaxie, lag die Dauer der Hemmungschronaxie zwischen den Werten 0,05σ und 0,15σ, dieDauer derRebound-Chronaxie zwischen den Werten 0,007σ und 0,03σ. In einem ganz isoliert stehenden Einzelfall haben wir dagegen eine Rebound-Chronaxie von 1,1σ beobachtet. Die ihrer Richtung nach allerdings wechselnden Differenzen zwischen Hemmungs- und Rebound-Chronaxie sprechen so wie eine Reihe einzelner Beobachtungen uber den Wettstreit zwischen erregenden und hemmenden Einflussen einer Ischiadicusreizung auf den Tonus der Kniestrecker fur die ursprunglich vonSherrington undSowton; neuerdings vonForbes und seinen Mitarbeitern vertretenen Ansicht, das die Rebound-Kontraktion dadurch zustandekommt, das neben den hemmenden Fasern im ipsilateralen Ischiadicus auch erregende Fasern gereizt werden, und das nach Schlus der Reizung die erregende Wirkung langer anhalt als die hemmende. Die Dauer der Chronaxie auch funktionell gleichartiger afferenter Ischiadicusfasern ist nicht konstant; sie scheint unter anderem in einer noch nicht geklarten Weise von der jeweiligen Hohe des Extensorentonus abhangig zu sein. Es werden Falle beschrieben, in denen wir nach Schlus einer wirksamen hemmenden Reizung ein rasch vorubergehendes weiteres Absinken des Tonus beobachtet haben („rebound relaxation after inhibition“ nachGraham Brawn). Eine solche Rebound-Erschlaffung kann als Analogon der Rebound-Kontraktion aufgefast werden: sie tritt dann auf, wenn neben den hemmenden auch tonusfordernde Fasern im Ischiadicus gereizt worden waren, deren Nachwirkung aberkurzer dauert als die der hemmenden Fasern. An einer Katze zeigt der M. quadriceps in relativ regelmasiger Periodik (4–5 pro Minute) kurze, spontan auftretende Tonussenkungen mit nachfolgender Rebound-Kontraktion.

EPR and optical spectra have been obtained for ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$-doped Sn${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ crystals both as grown and after subsequent heat treatment. Two distinct EPR and optical spectra have been observed. ${(\mathrm{EPR})}_{\mathrm{I}}$ and ${(\mathrm{Opt})}_{\mathrm{I}}$ are characteristic of the as-grown crystal. The ${(\mathrm{EPR})}_{\mathrm{I}}$ is shown to be due to ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ in substitutional sites with spin Hamiltonian parameters $D=\ensuremath{-}0.6840\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0002$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, $E=0.1852\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0002$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, and ${g}_{\mathrm{av}}=1.975$. The lines are superhyperfine-broadened with superhyperfine structure (shfs) of two- and four-tin nuclei approximately equal to 35 and 7 G, respectively. EPR spectra of ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{3+}$ and ${\mathrm{V}}^{4+}$ show some similarities in shfs. The ${(\mathrm{Opt})}_{\mathrm{I}}$ spectrum consists of intense bands centered at 18 250 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and 19 400 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ ($\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\sim}100$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\sim}3000$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$) with light polarized perpendicular and parallel to the $c$ axis, respectively. After heating in a reducing atmosphere, ${(\mathrm{Opt})}_{\mathrm{I}}$ disappears completely. New weak bands ${(\mathrm{Opt})}_{\mathrm{II}}$ appear at slightly different energies of 21 400 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and 19 700 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ ($\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\sim}0.6$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\sim}800$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$) with light polarized perpendicular and parallel to the $c$ axis, respectively. The EPR measurements of the reduced crystal shows that: (1) 75% of the ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ ions are still in the substitutional site; (2) a new spectrum ${(\mathrm{EPR})}_{\mathrm{II}}$ with four nonequivalent sites is observed with spin Hamiltonian parameters $D=\ensuremath{-}0.7033\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0002$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, $E=0.1448\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0002$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, and ${g}_{\mathrm{av}}=1.975$. The shfs for two and four tin nuclei are approximately 38 and 9 G, respectively. ${(\mathrm{EPR})}_{\mathrm{II}}$ may be due to ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ ions in interstitial positions. Reheating in ${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ atmosphere restores the original spectra. Results correlate ${(\mathrm{EPR})}_{\mathrm{I}}$ with ${(\mathrm{Opt})}_{\mathrm{II}}$. Hence $10Dq\ensuremath{\cong}20000$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and the tetragonal distortion is about 2000 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$.

Piezoelectric paramagnetic crystals can show a linear dependence of the paramagnetic susceptibility on an applied electric field. This effect has been detected in NiS${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}6${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$O at low temperatures. The thermodynamic inverse effect, the creation of an electric polarization by applied magnetic fields, has also been observed. Both effects are derived from a free energy which for the tetragonal 422 symmetry takes the form $\ensuremath{\xi}({H}_{a}{E}_{b}\ensuremath{-}{H}_{b}{E}_{a}){H}_{c}$, where $c$ denotes the tetragonal axis. The quantity $\ensuremath{\xi}$ has been measured as a function of temperature. It has a pronounced maximum at 3\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K, where $\ensuremath{\xi}=2.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}$ esu. It passes through zero at 1.38\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K. Between 10 and 70\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K it decreases approximately as ${T}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$. These features are explained by a microscopic theory which considers the linear variation in an applied electric field of all parameters in the spin Hamiltonian of the four ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{++}$ ions in the unit cell. The dominant contribution comes from the change in the crystal-field splitting $D$.

Nach Durchschneidung eines Vagosympathicus sinkt die Schwelle fur die vom peripheren Stumpfe des anderen Vagosympathicus ausgeloste Herzhemmung.

The Pockels Readout Optical Memory using Bi12SiO20 single crystals is described. Devices have a built‐in capability to optically read out a positive or a negative image from a single stored image. The stored information also can be selectively erased. Application of 650 V across the crystal wafer introduces a retardation of 30°. The read‐in and dark decay mechanisms, which include sensitivity, resolution, and response time, are discussed. The sensitivity is better than most of the previously reported reusable optical memories. The resolution is 10 μm. The read‐in response time is 5×10−6 sec. The storage time is 50 min under a constant illumination of 0.4 μW/cm2 at 633 nm and is 2 h in the dark. The dark resistivity of Bi12SiO20 after complete dark adaptation is likely to be ∼1015 Ω cm.

Type conversion and p‐n junction formation, produced by the implantation of 400‐keV F+ ions into p‐type ZnTe, have been confirmed by the thermal probe test, photovoltaic effect, I‐V characteristics, Hall effect, and EPR results.

Am noch nicht innervierten Herzen des Huhnerembryos und am Flimmerepithel der Rachenschleimhaut des Frosches wurden Versuche angestellt die den Zweck verfolgten, einen Beitrag zur Frage nach dem Angriffspunkte vegetativer Gifte zu liefern.

The reactions of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)platinum(0), (1) with 3,3,3-trifluoropropyne and 3,3,4,4,4-pentafluorobutyne produce cis-(P(C6H5)3)2Pt(C≡CCF3)2 and (P(C6H5)3)2Pt(C≡CC2F5)2, respectively. The analogous reaction between (1) and hexafluoro-2-butyne yields the known(P(C6H5)3)2Pt(F3CC2CF3).

The operation of an image storage panel, which is read in by means of optical absorption and read out in visible light by means of the Pockels electro‐optic effect, has been demonstrated. The sensing, storing, and readout medium consists of a single‐crystal film of cubic ZnS coated with a blocking contact. Performance characteristics observed to date on devices with areas between 1 and 2 cm2 are resolution of 85 line pairs/mm, continuous visible readout for 1 h, and image storage for up to 100 h. The readin sensitivity to achieve a 2:1 contrast ratio in readout is 20 erg/cm2.

The photoelectronic properties of CdS successively implanted with 1.0‐, 0.5‐, and 0.3‐MeV P+ ions versus annealing cycles were studied. Diodes thus formed were highly photosensitive, with photoconductive gains between 102 and 104. Yellow electroluminescence was observed at 77°K. Short annealing creates centers with a sheet resistance thermal activation energy of 0.13 eV. Prolonged annealing creates states 0.75–0.8 eV below the band edge.

The synthesis, reactivity, and structure of some ligand-bridged derivatives of dimanganese and dirhenium decacarbonyls are discussed.

The reaction of bis(trifluoromethyl)diazomethane with bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene yields 1,2-bis-(trimethylsilyl)-3,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)cyclopropene in low yield. The cyclopropene has an unexpectedly high C=C stretching frequency.
