In the world literature except for Japan, 44 cases of adult hemangioendothelioma of the liver have been reported so far. Surgery for this disease has been rarely reported and its decisive diagnosis mainly has been made by autopsy. Hepatic sarcoma of vascular origin is extremely rare and its development is rapid. We performed an extended right hepatic lobectomy in a 15-year old male with the preoperative diagnosis of primary hepatoma. The patient was doing well almost three years after operation but abdominal tumor again developed and a fatal outcome occurred after one month of re-hospitalization. This is a case report of hemangioendothelioma of the liver which was successfully resected with the review of 22 cases in the Japanese literature confirmed by autopsy from 1940 through 1972.
