In this report of the final evaluation of the Las Cruces (New Mexico) Sustained Primary Program for Bilingual Students (funded under Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act), the major findings for the academic years of 1967-8, 68-9, and 69-70 are cited following a program description in terms of schools, students, teachers, class size, classrooms and treatments, and objectives for each year. As reported, K-3 bilingual children in 4 public elementary schools that tended to be homogeneous with regard to the children's cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds were placed in 1 of 3 instructional settings: (1) an experimental English program where only English was used as an instructional language, (2) an experimental Spanish/English program where both languages were used, and (3) a control program. The report discusses the program's effectiveness in terms of such factors as Spanish vs. English instruction, children's intellectual development and self-concept, parental involvement, and the children's bicultural interaction. Although "results of the K-3 experiment still are...inconclusive," it is indicated that the program is providing"...a very valuable set of learning experiences in both the cognitive and affective domains." Also included in the report is a post-program evaluation, completed in the fall of 1970, to examine the effectiveness of the summer session experience as measured by the Metropolitan Achievement Test; 10 tables summarize the significant differences and the analyses proper, which indicate that the summer sessions appear to have a beneficial effect on achievement. The purpose of this study was to develop a group test of self-concept which is especially applicable to the Spanish-surnamed primary school student. The pilot version of this instrument, the Primary Self-Concept Scale (PSCS), was designed to measure 5 aspects of self-concept which were felt to be relevant to school success: behavior, intellectual, physical appearance, peer relationships, and emotional state. After factor analysis, however, the factors identified were (1) aggressiveness/cooperation, (2) intellectual self, (3) peer ostracism/acceptance, (4) helpfulness, (5) physiological self, and (6) adult acceptance/rejection. The 2 additional factors measured in this study were emotional self and success/nonsuccess. Both the preliminary and the revised PSCS were administered to 650 primary school pupils in New Mexico. Emanating from the PSCS was the third revision, the Primary Self-Concept Inventory (PSCS). Studies concerning the further development and refinement of the PSCI should include subjects from a variety of age levels, ethnic groups, and socioeconomic levels. Further research should also entail the development of remediational procedures closely related to performance on the PSCI. (HBS)

Electrical stimulation of the dorsolateral pons for 5-minute periods in anesthetized cats produced a rise in blood pressure of 40%, a reduction in renal blood flow of 28%, and an increase in the rate of renin release (the product of renal plasma flow and the venoarterial difference of plasma renin activity) of more than 100% in intact kidneys. Comparison of an intact kidney with the contralateral denervated one showed that denervation abolished the decrease in renal blood flow and the increase in renin release induced by pontine stimulation. Infusion of phenoxybenzamine into an otherwise intact kidney prevented the decrease in renal blood flow on that side, but brain-induced renin release was at least equal to that from the contralateral kidney in which the vasomotor response remained unchanged. Treatment of the animal with intravenously administered propranolol (1.3-3.0 mg/kg) abolished any rise in renin release, although propranolol accentuated the reduction in renal blood flow during stimulation of the brainstem. We concluded that the increased renal release of renin induced by electrical stimulation of a pressor area of the brainstem was dependent on intact renal nerves and on mechanisms blocked by propranolol but was not dependent on changes in renal blood flow or on renal alpha receptors.

Intravenous diazoxide produced an immediate marked hypotension in both mild and severe hypertensive patients. Depression of vasomotor reflexes, tested by the Valsalva overshoot, and of pressor responsiveness to noradrenaline was found only in the group of mild hypertensives. Decreased pressor reactivity to noradrenaline was not due to a nonspecific vascular effect of diazoxide, because pressor responsiveness to angiotensin was simultaneously increased. Renal tubular reabsorption of sodium and water was increased shortly after injection of diazoxide, and there was also a significant retention of potassium. Correlation studies suggest that interference with vasomotor reflexes, and with vascular responsiveness to the sympathetic transmitter, can account only in part for the hypotensive action of diazoxide. The possible roles of water and electrolyte redistribution remain to be elucidated.

Pontine stimulation induces a significant increase in renal venous renin activity, in venous-arterial renin activity difference and in renin release from an intact, innervated kidney, whereas no changes are observed in the contralateral denervated kidney. Renal blood flow markedly decreases in the innervated, and remains unchanged in the denervated, kidney during pontine stimulation. 2. Blockade of the vasomotor response to pontine stimulation in one kidney by close arterial infusion of phenoxybenzamine does not reduce the renin released by that kidney as compared with the contralateral intact one.

Ethacrynic acid has been found to possess a similar antihypertensive action to the thiazide diuretics. The use of the two drugs together results in a greater fall in pressure than that obtained with either drug alone. When thiazide therapy is supplemented by ethacrynic acid and dietary restriction of sodium a substantial additional reduction in blood pressure averaging 48/18 mm. Hg was obtained.
