In reviewing the literature one is struck by the fact that comparatively few cases of interstitial keratitis offer the opportunity for pathologic-anatomic examination. For this reason, whenever materials for such a purpose are available, it is desirable to utilize them for further investigation, in the hope that they may make more clear the conception of this disease, which is as yet by no means well understood. Fortunately, in the present case it was possible to secure the eyeball after the vision was destroyed in spite of treatment. The histologic examination revealed many interesting changes which constitute the subject of this paper.REPORT OF CASEHistory.—A boy, aged 14, came to the Eye Clinic of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital on April 29, 1927, with a history of marked redness, lacrimation, photophobia and impaired vision involving the left eye, which had lasted continuously for six weeks.

The effects of consuming dried egg and various carbohydrates on 1) the concentration of liver lipids and on 2) the activities of liver dehydrogenases of the hexosemonophosphate (HMP) shunt were investigated. The animals used were male rats of the Wistar strain which had been fasted for 64 hours and were refed one of four diets for 1, 2, or 14 days. The three test diets contained 25% dried whole egg and were identical except for the carbohydrate portion, which was sucrose, cornstarch, or fructose. The reference diet contained similar proportions of fat and protein but no egg. The activities of liver dehydrogenases in the HMP shunt reached the highest level in all diet groups after 2 days of refeeding. High levels of these enzymes were associated with high levels of liver lipid at this time. The inclusion of egg reduced the early rise in liver lipids and in liver dehydrogenase activities. The kind of dietary carbohydrate present in egg-containing diets influenced both liver lipids and dehydrogenase activities. However, animals fed the egg diets for more than 2 days showed a further accumulation of hepatic lipid which was not accompanied by high dehydrogenase activities.

Labelled 17α-hydroxyprogesterone was injected into the umbilical vein of each of two male previable human foetuses at the time of laparotomy. The umbilical circulation remained intact for 3 min after which time the tissues of the foetuses, placentae and cords were removed, extracted and the labelled unconjugated metabolites formed were identified. The mid-pregnancy human foetus has a high capacity for metabolizing 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, forming corticosteroids, C-19 steroids and a variety of reduced and hydroxylated metabolites. Androstenedione and testosterone were isolated from both the foetal adrenals and testes but the older of the two foetuses studied contributed in major part to this synthesis. All the foetal tissues examined showed a remarkable capacity to metabolize 17α-hydroxyprogesterone.

After injection of [4-14C]17α-hydroxyprogesterone into the umbilical vein of two male human foetuses at mid-pregnancy a number of steroid conjugates were isolated from the foetal adrenals, liver, intestines and residual tissues, confirming the capacity of the human foetus to conjugate an extensive range of steroid substrates. The conjugated steroids isolated were 17α-hydroxypregnanolone sulphate (liver, intestine), 3β,17α-dihydroxy-5α-pregnan-20-one sulphate (residue), pregnanetriol sulphate (liver, residue), cortisol sulphate (adrenal), pregnanetriol glucosiduronate (liver, residue) and 17α-hydroxypregnanolone glucosiduronate (liver).

The limbus is one of the interesting and important clinico-anatomic landmarks of the eyeball. The description of its boundaries found in most of the ophthalmic textbooks and literature is generally not uniform. Salzmann1 defined the limbus as "the transitional zone between the cornea proper on one side and the adjacent tissues (conjunctiva and sclera) on the other, it being a zone of 1 mm. width limited centrally by the margin of Bowman's membrane and peripherally by the corneoscleral border, and, properly speaking, including only the anterior layers ( ?) of the cornea. It may be thought of as being bordered by a plane going through the depths of the cornea from the border of Bowman's membrane to the border of Descemet's membrane." In spite of the great prevalence of syphilis in China, primary chancre of the conjunctiva is not commonly seen. The case reported here is of especial interest for two reasons: 1. It is a double infection in which the tarsal conjunctiva and the skin of the forehead are simultaneously infected. 2.
