A well-documented case of Wilms' tumor in an adult is reported. Emphasis is madethat metastases from an adult-type Wilms' tumor respond well to irradiation; whereas actinomycin D may actually increase the growth of metastases.

Reaction-rate measurements were made for the ortho-para hydrogen conversion at −196°C. at 1 atm. pressure with nickel oxide catalysts using alumina and silica gel as carriers. Data were obtained for fine particles for which pore-diffusion resistances were negligible, for large particles of silica catalysts containing only micropores, and for alumina pellets containing both micro- and macropores. From these data experimental effectiveness factors were evaluated. Theoretical effectiveness factors predicted by using a previous theory (7) agreed well with the experimental results. The application of the theory requires pore-geometry data. The measurement of these data and their use in predicting diffusion resistances are illustrated by experimental data and calculations for the several catalysts. It is shown that a satisfactory method of predicting the significance of diffusion within porous catalysts requires information on the pore volume and pore sizes.

As incidental to our main studies on mass transfer, flooding rate data have been obtained in a packed liquid—liquid extraction tower with no solute transfer, with 38 in. Raschig rings, 14 in. copper rings and 6 mm glass beads as the different packing materials, using water as the continuous phase and each of the following solvents, toluence, Pegasol, kerosene and methyl isobutyl ketone, which do not preferentially wet the packing, respectively as the dispersed phase. Visual observations, aided by photographic studies supplemented the measurements of the flooding velocities. The flow rates at the flooding point have been satisfactorily fitted on the square root plot as a preliminary correlation, and have been well correlated by the method of Dell and Pratt. It was observed that flooding rates decreased with decreasing size of the packing for any given system, and that higher flooding rates are favoured by high density difference and low interfacial tension of the liquid systems.

In 35 patients with essential hypertension, glomerular counts were recorded using a threefold selective renal magnification angiography technique and correlated with serum creatinine determinations. An arbitrary glomerular index (G.I.) is considered normal if over 1,000. In all azotemic patients the G.I. was below 600. This preliminary study suggests that the glomerulogram may be more sensitive than creatinine clearance in evaluating pre-azotemic diffuse parenchymatous renal disease in the hypertensive patient.

The present studies compare clearance (K) for varying molecular weight (MW) solutes, Urea (U), Uric acid (Ua), BSP and B12 in hollow fiber kidneys (HFK) before and in reused hollow fiber kidneys (RHFK) after five hemodialyses. In 10 RHFK, 3 % H2O2 was perfused in the dialysate compartment to clear residual blood. Five RHFK were cleaned with water (W) alone. Fiber bundle volume (FBV) before each use was > 75 ml. RHFK with H2O2 appeared cleaner than with W. KU was 168 ± 6,134 ± 12, and 152 ± 10 ml/min; KUa was 144 ± 11, 89 ± 12, and 101 ± 6 ml/min; KBSP was 50 ± 7, 29 ± 7, and 42 ± 6 ml/min, and KB12 was 15 ± 2,7 ± 2 and 11 ± 2 ml/min with HFK before, RHFK with H2O2, and RHFK with W, respectively. The percentage decrease in K was greater for higher MW solutes. HFK cleaning with H2O2 before dialysis did not change solute transport markedly. The data suggest: (1) there is relatively greater decrease in middle molecule clearance than small molecule in RHFK, and (2) with comparable FBV, clearance is better (p 2O2.

A beta scintillation spectrometer with a well type of plastic phosphor is assembled for the measurement of total internal conversion coefficients employing the internal-external-conversion technique. With foils of elements ranging from lead to copper as external converters, measurements were made and the values obtained for the total ICC are 0.112 ± 0.011 and 0.21 ± 0.03 for the 661 keV and 279 keV transitions of 137Ba and 203Tl isotopes respectively. The deduced ακ values are in satisfactory agreement with the theoretical values.

Constant pressure diffusion rates of hydrogen through Vycor porous glass were measured in nitrogen and neon systems. The experimental diffusivities are less than those predicted by the random pore model indicating that this model may not be satisfactory for a low porosity material such as Vycor. Interpreted in terms of an assembly of parallel pores the data suggest a tortuosity factor of approximately 2.4. Rate data for the ortho-para hydrogen reaction were also measured at −196°C. and 1 atm. The catalyst 2% nickel/Vycor was found to have pore properties (area, mean pore size, pore volume) similar to that of plain Vycor. Predicted effectiveness factors using the experimental diffusion data were in good agreement with values determined experimentally. The latter were evaluated from rate measurements on both pellet and particles (58 μ mean diameter).

Ternary liquid equilibrium data at 30°C are presented for the systems containing water and methyl iso butyl carbinol with formic, acetic, propionic and butyric acids respectively as solutes. The tie-line data have been correlated by the method of Hand. Formic acid is found to favour the aqueous layer, whereas propionic and butyric acids are observed to prefer the solvent layer. With acetic acid, however, the phenomenon of solutropy is observed at about 10 per cent acid composition, although the distribution ratio is closer to unity at all acid concentrations. The zone of heterogeneity decreased from formic to acetic acid, and thereafter it increased with increasing molecular weight of the acid. The behaviour of these systems as regards the area of heterogeneity and distribution relationships has been explained in terms of the relative influences of the alkyl and carboxyl groups of the fatty acids towards the solvent and water constituents of the ternary system.

A resin-column hemoperfusion system was used to treat four patients with profound, life-threatening drug intoxication. The column contained 650 g of pyrogen-free resin, Amberlite XAD-2. The resin is uncharged and has a cross-linked, polystyrene macroreticular structure with particular surface attraction for high-molecular-weight, lipid-soluble molecules. Blood was pumped through the column at a flow rate of 300 ml per minute for three hours. Two patients had secobarbital, one a mixture of glutethimide-butabarbital-ethchlorvynol, and one amobarbital intoxication. In all patients the column clearances of these drugs were markedly superior to known clearances with hemodialysis. A transient, modest fall in blood platelet concentration followed hemoperfusion. No serious clinical toxic effects were noted. The resin-column hemoperfusion system was technically simpler, consistently more effective and clinically superior to hemodialysis.

A patient with refractory heart failure and anasarca underwent eight peritoneal dialyses during a 21-month period. Clinical response to the dialyses was excellent. To our knowledge, this is the first patient upon whom repeated peritoneal dialysis was used over a prolonged period of time for refractory heart failure.

In Table 1 the values of the experimental total y-ray cross sections measured by Wiedenbeck (1962), Bearden (1966), Knerr and Vonach (1967), and McCrary et al. (1967) at energies of 40,50, 60, 70, and 80 keY in the elements Cu, Sn, W, and Pb are given. It will be seen that in Cu at 80 keY, in Sn at 40 keY, in W at 50 keY, and in Pb at 40, 50, and 70 ke V these values do not agree well amongst themselves, even after considering the error limits.
