A course in forming medium size pottery on the potter's wheel and developing skill to reproduce matching forms is presented. Abilities which will be expected of the student at the end of the course include: (1) defining important terms relating to pottery, (2) identifying and differentiating between certain aspects of ceramic art, and (3) demonstrating proper methods of clay preparation and handling. Course content covers those aspects for which student will be expected to display knowledge at the end of the course. (CK)

Upon completion of the course, the student will be expected to be familiar with all terms and characteristics connected with pottery and ceramics, and he will be expected to be able to properly handle and form clay. This quinmester guide describes a laboratory course designed to offer opportunities for experimentation in mosaic design by exploring uses of various techniques and materials. The course, which is offered to 7th through 12th grade pre-vocational students, emphasizes the use of design in relation to creative composition. Students learn to design, glaze, fire, cut and develop their own tiles, tessera, etc., to be utilized in mosaic projects. Proper use of instruments and tools as well as proper technique is emphasized. In addition to actually producing projects, students learn the importance of mosaic art as a medium for art expression, and the historical background of mosaic design from the Egyptians to contemporary artists. Other sections of the guide include: a course outline; an evaluation section; bibliographies of student and teacher references; a list of places to visit; a list of periodicals of interest, suggested media resources for teachers, and a list of equipment suppliers. A mastery of skills in creative ceramic arts is recommended for students in grades 9 through 12 before they attempt this quinmester course. Emphasis is upon students acquiring an understanding of the historical development of ceramics enabling them to identify outstanding ceramics of the past; basic kinds of ceramic art and ceramists from various countries; and several outstanding contemporary American ceramists. Other objectives are for students to master a working knowledge of clay preparation and handling, clay forming, decorating, glazing, and firing. This quinmester course outline includes a course description and rationale, objectives, an outline of content, evaluation suggestions, resources for students, and a bibliography. The course is suggested for prevocational students in grades 9-12. Course content ranges from a definition and background section, to preparation and handling and forming gem stones. At the end of the course the student should, among other things, be able to: 1) identify the work of several outstanding contemporary lapidists; 2) demonstrate the method of preparing and handling gem stones for tumbling and polishing; 3) demonstrate the method of gem tumbling and polishing; 4) demonstrate the method of gem cutting. Out of 415 patients with duodenal ulcer under-going vagotomy in the past 6 years, 198 truncal vagotomies (T.V.) and 217 selective vagotomies (S.V.) were performed. Of the 217 S. V. s, 134 cases had a total selective vagotomy of the stomach (preserving the pyloroduodenal nervous peduncle), and in 83 cases a proximal selective vagotomy was performed (preserving also the antral branches of the two principal nerves of the gastric lesser curve or Latarjet nerves). The authors prefer the name ‘acid-fundic selective vagotomy (A.F.S.V.) of the stomach’ for the latter procedure. In 89 of the patients having S.V. no gastric drainage procedure was performed; in 27 of these a total S.V. had been performed and in 62 cases an A.F.S.V. In patients undergoing S.V. without gastric drainage the clinical results and gastric emptying were fairly good in the cases with a total S.V. (follow-up time, 12 months), and very good in the cases with an A.F.S.V. (follow-up time, 6 months). Basal acid output (B.A.O.) and maximal (pentagastrin-stimulated) acid output (M.A.O.) were evaluated in those patients undergoing A.F.S.V. before and 10 days after operation. B.A.O. was reduced by 80.5 per cent and M.A.O. by 68.5 per cent. An insulin test performed 3 months after operation was negative in 80 per cent of cases (complete vagotomy); in the other cases the vagotomy was adequate. Clinical results, although after only a short follow-up, suggest that the procedure can be considered as the treatment of choice in most patients with an uncomplicated duodenal ulcer (76 per cent in our series). Gastric drainage is required only in cases of stenosing duodenal ulcer with delayed gastric emptying. Pyloroplasty is also mandatory in the treatment of bleeding ulcer and of perforated ulcer (if the suture is stenosing).
