Abstract: A progress report of a study using computer assisted instruction (CAI) materials for an elementary course in accounting principles is presented. The study was based on the following objectives: (1) improvement of instruction in the elementary accounting sequence, and (2) help for transfer students from two-year institutions. The materials under development are part of the Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operation IV system (PLATO IV). One feature of the system which is extensively used in the accounting materials is provision for the student to enter arithmetic or algebraic expressions as a response to a question. The expression can then be evaluated and the result compared to the correct answer. This feature allows the student to concentrate on the method of solution. The advantages and potential disadvantages of the CAI system are discussed. Twenty-six lessons were developed for the first semester and seventeen for the second semester of a course in financial accounting, and their testing and implementation are described. Examination results and an analysis of student time and completion of homework revealed significant differences in favor of the PLATO IV instruction. (Author/EC)

Abstract: Stages in the development of international and intercultural education in the American secondary schools are discussed in this report. The author describes different sets of rationale for teaching toward international understanding which have evolved through the years. Cited are six social studies projects which represent productive materials and programs being developed for the secondary schools. Suggestions of methods intended to improve international understanding in American schools are presented. These include proposals for use of educational resources from other countries which might assist the schools in this country to realize their objectives related to international understanding. (SHM)

Abstract: The work is the report of a study concerning the impact of the inquiry method of teaching on affective as opposed to cognitive achievements. Subjects were 10th grade students given a reading assignment in Asian studies. Control and experimental groups were asked to respond to questions about the material read. Attitude gains were computed for both groups by a scale developed during a pilot study run prior to the study. The investigator found that attitude shifts were made as the result of the inquiry method as distinct from the more traditional expository method. Level of intelligence and attitude toward the program were not considered to have influenced the findings. (CWB)
