A patient with perfume dermatitis was patch-tested to 94 constituents of perfume and was found to have positive reactions to 12 components. An approach with regard to reducing the prevalence of perfume dermatitis is suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A comparison of non-mat and mat ecotypes of three reseeded hill swards showed that mat pasture soil was characterized by relatively high C/N ratios, low available nutrient status, low burrowing earthworm biomass, and low soil microbial activity (determined as CO2 evolution). A replicated trial was laid out on a uniform mat area of one of these swards (Ciderhouse Hill) and lime and fertilizer treatments were applied in two successive seasons. Lime treatment reduced mat weight, increased the proportion of 'sown' grasses in the sward and stimulated soil microbial activity, initially, burrowing earthworm biomass was inhibited by lime; but, after an interval of four years, a positive response was noted at the lower treatment level. Sodium nitrate interacted with lime to increase soil microbial activity. Soil cellulolytic activity was increased by nitrate and phosphate treatments. The level of soil moisture in the field at the time of soil sampling appeared to influence soil microbial activity measured under standard conditions in the laboratory: high rainfall tended to reduce microbial activity. The significance of these findings and the influence of nutritional and climatic factors on sward reversion and mat formation are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The total weight of vegetation on an area of just over 1 acre of old secondary forest in the moist forest zone of Ghana has been determined, and found to be equivalent to roughly 150 tons per acre dry weight. The nutrient content of each component of the vegetation was also determined and showed that the amounts of the major nutrients immobilised in the vegetation were: N, 1,800 lb./acre; P, 120 lb./acre; K, 800 1b./acre; Ca, 2,400 lb./acre; Mg, 350 lb./acre. The corresponding amounts of nutrients in the top foot of soil supporting the vegetation were: total N, 4,100 lb./acre; 'available' P, 11 lb./acre; exchangeable K, 580 lb./acre; exchangeable Ca, 2,300 lb./acre; exchangeable Mg, 330 lb./acre. About half the nutrients stored in the vegetation were contained in readily combustible material, and except for N would be released to the soil if the forest were cleared and burnt for cultivation. The quantity of roots and the amounts of nutrients contained in them were not sufficiently great to make an important addítion to the nutrient supply in the soil during subsequent cultivation. Of the total quantity of roots supporting the vegetation 85.5 per cent by weight were within 1 foot of the soil surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on the new kind of informational endeavor that Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) initiated in the midst of nuclear power plant controversies. ORAU is a private nonprofit corporation of more than 40 southern colleges and universities which conducts educational, informational, and research programs under an operating contract with the Atomic Energy Commission. The new endeavor entails the preparation and presentation of workshops on nuclear energy in the Midland area. This article also discusses two parts of the account of the Midland reactor controversy based on the ORAU publication.

The article reports on the different perspectives on the nuclear debate between coal-fired power plant and nuclear plant. The air pollution of a typical coal-fired power plant could kill about 50 people per year as compared to a nuclear power plant of the same capacity which could kill an average of 0.01 percent per year. It seems strange that given the other disdvantages of the coal-fired power plants, there are still strong opposition into their construction. One major criticism of nuclear power plants was the discharges of radioactive materials due to faulty fuel cladding in the Dresden boiling water reactor in Illinois and the Humboldt Bay boiling water reactor in California.

A rational, sophisticated approach to the foreign investment decision process requires a careful examination by the firm of numerous factors that relate to both the general environment of a proposed investment and the specific operating functions of the firm in that environment. The article presents a speech by Eugene Rabinowitch, editor-in-chief of the "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists," delivered at the 1972 annual meeting of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He discusses the need to use newly acquired technological capacities for the survival and social evolution of mankind.

The article focuses on the alternative air pollution control based on well-defined emission rights for each parcel of land in a region. The move is due to the vague and unevenly applied control strategy under a general smoke ordinance. An alternative approach to the development of air pollution control plans for stationary sources of sulfur dioxide and particulates is based on the integration of air resource management with urban and regional planning. It insures that the desired long-range regional air quality goals are attained by control plans which have an inherent economic optimal which are not sensitive to detailed inputs required in a cost-effectiveness analysis.

The discuses on the different forms of social controls on the use of applied science in the issue of production of lethal military weapons, or other devices purposely or inadvertently harmful to large numbers of human beings. The author points out that among the forms of social controls of science such as individual, inadvertent, market, university and the government controls, it is the latter that present the major mechanism for social control of science. The government agencies may exert control over applied science in several ways which includes the regulations on the use of products marked to be harmful or dangerous, by the way funds are allocated for research and development aimed at specific end-products and by the thing government agencies build or buy.

The article discusses the relation of the nuclear weapon systems' characteristics to the nuclear test cessation, magnitude of the atomic stockpile and problem of creating a formula for a rational nuclear policy. A nuclear weapon system is a complex structure because it includes outside elements which are essential to the proper functions of the system. Due to the high cost in developing ballistic missiles, military leaders would develop smaller missiles which could be fitted with a warhead that weighs 200 pounds. Additional nuclear tests could also enhance the striking power of modern weapons. In addition, nuclear warhead is an important component of a missile system. However, it is the costliest item.

The article discusses the first report of the Scientific and Technical Committee of the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission regarding atomic energy control. The reports contains scientific and technical features of atomic energy and its effect on the problem of controlling atomic energy. It also contains discussions of nuclear physics as a well-developed science upon the discovery of uranium fission. A discussion of nuclear fission and nuclear energy is also presented together with the peaceful methods of utilizing atomic energy.

The article presents an examination into the processes of securities market pricing when the assumption of a perfect capital market is removed. The impact of non-zero transaction, information, and management costs are discussed on risk and return valuation. Optimal investment portfolios, equilibrium prices for risky securities, and perfect capital market comparisons are each discussed in turn towards this end, modeling their distinctions within the imperfect market and highlighting universal relationships between the two scenarios.

The author believes this work is the extension of the empirical research that has examined the effectiveness of holding risky assets in a portfolio. This strategy has proven to be profitable; however, the author advances the work by developing a method for deciding which available securities to include in one's portfolio.

It is explained that the economic growth of underdeveloped nations of the world is stated to depend upon the fulfillment through international action of two conditions, which includes the provision of technique or know-how, and, second, the supplying of capital funds to the underdeveloped nations. The article focuses on the economic growth and assistance occurring in Venezuela.

The article discusses the use of psychological testing in the employee selection process of salespeople. There is strong evidence for believing that certain personality traits represent the basic factors necessary for success or failure in selling. The results achieved by the use of personality tests have been widely debated among psychologists, executives, and students of business. Research gathered from U.S. firms in 1960 indicates that 90% of the firms who utilized the tests experienced a significant decrease in labor turnover.
