Megaoersted fields are generated by an explosive-driven flux compression method with the use of a cylindrical metal liner. Framing and streak photographs of the contracting liner are taken with a Kerr electro-optical shutter and with a rotating mirror, respectively. The Faraday effect in the ultrahigh fields is observed by both photo-electric and streak-photographic methods. Using a diffraction grating spectroscope together with a streak camera, the wave-length dependence and the field dependence of the Faraday effect are determined by a single shot of the implosion experiment.

Small-scale explosive plane wave generators, 40-78 mm in diameter, are developed to perform solid state experiments at shock pressures up to 1 Mbar. Techniques for determining the shock compression curve are described in detail, especially in the case where a phase transformation occurs at a high pressure.

Magnetic fields exceeding 1 MOe are reproducibly generated by a flux compression method using a cylindrical metal liner and high explosives. Some new devices are employed for simultaneous initiation of the cylindrical explosive on its outer surface. Detailed measurements are made on the dependence of the liner velocity on the mass ratio of liner and explosive. The results are consistent with an analysis based on the theory of detonation.

In order to investigate the possibility of occurrence of liquid ferromagnetism, measurements are made of magnetic susceptibility of various cobalt alloys in the molten state. Its temperature dependence is expressed by the Curie-Weiss law, from which the extrapolated Curie temperature θ_p is determined. In all cases investigated, θ_p is much lower than the liquidus temperature, so the liquid ferromagnetism does not take place. On the other hand, some cobalt alloys in the amorphous solid state exhibit the ferromagnetism below the Curie point θ_f. Ternary Co-B-P alloys are examined as to a relationship between θ_p of the liquid and θ_f of the amorphous solid.
