The article provides information about the characteristics and functions of several types of alkaloids, a class of compounds synthesized by plants and have wonderful effects on the physiology of animals. The alkaloid morphine, which remains an indispensable drug, is the principal extract of the opium poppy. The coca-leaf alkaloid cocaine plays as a useful drug and sinister narcotic. Alkaloids are said to be rare in fungi, but the ergot fungus produces alkaloids.
