- Abstract
This publication is the first in the series, "New Dimensions in Higher Education," which developed from a concern for the problems facing colleges and universities. Independent study and its implications for increasing educational effectiveness are examined in terms of: honors programs; independent study programs; the interest in, and scope, context, and economics of independent study; and the research needed in independent study. Pilot experimentation is recommended for providing independent study within an integrated curriculum; for setting minimum time requirements for a course of independent study; for reviewing teaching methods; for broadening honors-type approaches to independent study; for making institutional provision for early admission, advanced placement, or credit for prior learning; and for developing working models.
