Heat transfer and fluid flow experiments were made in narrow vertical enclosures of varying aspect ratio (5 ≤ H/W ≤ 40) filled with non-Newtonian fluids whose consistencies ranged from near that of water to several orders of magnitude more. Temperature and velocity profiles were obtained for thermal conditions of low convection augmentation to fully developed turbulent flow. The tests were run over periods of as much as 60 days, during which time the flow index and the consistency of the fluids changed markedly according to their thermal histories. Local hot and cold wall and average enclosure heat transfer rates and wall shear stresses were evaluated. For all the fluids, including the abnormal fluids (those which thickened with increasing temperature) the heat transfer could be correlated by Nu=CRab although the constant C differed for the two classes of fluids. These correlations were valid over the entire flow regimes studied even in the presence of multiple boundary layers and secondary vortices.

SummaryThe present study examined the content factors of the Group Personality Projective Test (GPPT) using factor analytic procedures based on item intercorrelations, in contrast to the published version's use of part scores from a priorigroupings of items. The factors extracted did not coincide with the original GPPT dimensions. Only a small portion of the GPPT items loaded significantly on the factors obtained. The proportion of variance accounted for by the factor structure was also very small. Results also indicated that a position response set may be affecting scores on the Neuroticism dimension. It was concluded that the GPPT, in terms of what it proposes to measure, apparently has very limited utility.

In a preliminary study of attitudes and emotional reactions of Negro high school students who desegregated formerly all-white schools in a Deep South city, it was determined that there were many forebodings, unpleasant experiences, and emotional upsets, but that on the whole no deep emotional disturbances resulted. In the main study, an objective approach to attitudes and emotional reactions did not confirm hypotheses that length of desegregated experience results in lessened ethnic prejudice on either a cognitive or non-cognitive level, that state anxiety is altered by vicarious “formal” or “informal” interracial situations, and that Negro girls react more intensely to such situations than white ones. However, differential reactions did result from vicariously experiencing “formal” versus “informal” situations.

SummaryThe investigators factor-analyzed abstract art preferences and correlated art factors with traits on the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey. Factors were derived from preference ratings on the “Abstract Art Test” developed by Knapp and Green in a previous study. Two of the three multiple loading factors were “non-geometric” or expressionistic; one was “geometric,” rationalistic. Only 2 of the 30 correlations with the GZTS scales were significant at the .10 level, and these could have been due to chance. There is support for dichotomizing abstract art types into “geometric” and “non-geometric” but little support for the role of temperament in aesthetic preference.

The net photosynthetic rate of the terminal leaflets of the first five trifoliolate leaves of nine varieties of soybean (Glycine max(L.) Merr.) was sudied inf rared‐gas analysis. The variety ‘Hark’ was found to photosynthesize at a significantly higher rate than either ‘Chippewa 64’ or ‘ADO0.’ A large amount of variability was observed in plant to plant observations within the same variety. After an adjustment was made to remove this variability, significant differences were observed among the varieties tested.
