The article examines the basic characteristics of moiré patterns, which are generated when figures with periodic rulings are made to overlap. If the superposed lines are almost parallel, a miniscule displacement of one of the figures will cause a large displacement in the elements of the moiré pattern. This phenomenon has been found to have significant implications in many areas of science. It can be regarded as the interference between two periodic functions.
