In both types of crosses (3n C.G.×4n D 154 and 4n D 154×3n C.G.) pods were found to set. In the first case pods shed within 4 days. In the second case pods were found to persist till maturity. Only a few uppermost ovules were found to be fertilized. Pollen tubes were seen to reach the ovules within 24 hours.

This paper proposes a theory of filter-cake washing on continous filtration equipment based upon the assumption that mixing of the strong liquor and wash fluid is controlling. The theory can be conventiently applied to experimental filtration leaf tests for determining wash efficiency and is easily extrapolated to full-scale results with the normally experienced uneven cake thickness and wash-fluid distribution taken into account. To obtain the necessary wash-fluid volume for proper soluble removal, a correlation method of wash time as a function of wash ratio with parameters of cake-formation time has been derived from commonly accepted filtration theory. Experimental and plant data indicate a close agreement with the theory, and the method can be employed to predict filtration rate as a function of wash ratio. A typical illustration has been given to determine filtration requirements for recovering soluble uranium after leaching of the ore by continuous filtration. Washing rate was proved to be conrolling, and this design based only on cake-formation rate would yield insufficient wash ratios and excessive soluble uranium loss. Final filter and flow-sheet design must be based on uranium recovery which can be predicted by the proposed methods.

A 32-year-old man had the clinical features of progressive increase in intracranial pressure due to a chronic subdural hematoma except for papilledema. Lumbar puncture, however, precipitated acute tentorial coning and severe neurologic signs. The tentorial coning resulted in an acute aggravation of intracranial hypertension and precipitated an increase in the intracranial venous pressure that was transmitted to the orbital veins, causing orbital venous stasis, symmetrical increase in the intraorbital contents, and symmetrical bilateral proptosis.

Acid phosphatase and esterase activities were studied in adrenal glands obtained from rats killed at regular intervals following surgical stress (cauda equina transection). Zymograms of acid phosphatase produced by starch gel electrophoresis revealed increased reactivity in the operated samples. With esterases, a slightly different pattern was observed in the operated group, which exhibited a few additional bands particularly in the cathode region. This was confirmed by densitometric analysis of the gel strips. Two of these additional bands were organophosphate-sensitive and the remaining few were activated by p-chloromercuribenzoate. These latter bands appeared to arise from splitting of the preexisting organophosphate-resistant bands present in control zymograms. Biochemical assay of the two hydrolytic enzymes demonstrated a remarkable similarity in their responses to operative stress—probably implying a general lysosomal activation. Both enzymes exhibited a peak activity 8 hr after operation, followed by a gradual decline. Both organophosphate-sensitive and organophosphate-resistant esterases contributed toward the rise in total esterase activity. Histochemical studies on tissue sections revealed a more reactive adrenal cortex in the operated group, but were of little help in localizing the additional esterase activity observed in gel strips.

The reaction sequence ArCH3 [graphics omitted] XH + ArCH2X [graphics omitted] XH, ArCHX2, (CF3)2NX, ArCOX[Ar = Ph, p-ClC6H4, C6F5; X =(CF3)2N·O] has been established, and evidence adduced for the formation of aldehydes, ArCHO, as precursors of the carbonyl compounds ArCOX. The compounds PhCH2X, PhCHX2, and PhCX3 have been synthesised by treatment of benzyl bromide, benzylidene dichloride, and benzylidyne trichloride, respectively, with the mercurial HgX2[X =(CF3)2N·O]; the first of these undergoes C–O bond cleavage when heated with hydrobromic or hydriodic acid, with liberation of the hydroxylamine (CF3)2N·OH; the last decomposes thermally into PhCO2N-(CF3)2 and two compounds believed to be isomers of (CF3)2N·C6H4·CO2·N(CF3)2.

Basic hydrolysis of the carbonyl compounds ArCO2·N(CF3)2(Ar = Ph or C6F5) yields the corresponding arenecarboxylic acids, and attack of bistrifluoromethyl nitroxide on the phenyl compound at elevated temperature leads to nuclear substitution with the formation of (bistrifluoromethylamino-oxy)[(bistrifluoromethylamino-oxy)carbonyl]benzenes.
