The methods of rotation viscometry have been applied in the field to a tholeiitic lava at 1130 degrees to 1135 degrees C containing about 25 percent crystals and 2 to 5 percent gas bubbles, using a stainless steel spindle inserted through the lava crust. The results agree well with the Bingham model. Yield values in the lava are 1200 and 700 dynes cm (super -2) , and the plastic constants are 6500 and 7500 poises. Laboratory studies in silicone fluid show gas bubbles enhance plastic behavior. In general, lavas must be treated as non-Newtonian fluids; the conditions that may cause different types of fluid behavior in tholeiitic lava are outlined.

A magnetized plasma column is effectively heated by the injection of a short pulse width (3 nsec) relativistic electron beam (500 keV, 2 kA). It is found that the coupling efficiency of the beam energy into the plasma is optimum when the plasma density is appropriate.

Infection with adenovirus Type 8 appears to be regularly associated with clinical epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). 1-5 Jawetz et al. 1 isolated the prototype of this virus in 1955. Since that time, isolations of nine strains have been reported 4 to June, 1957, eight from clinical EKC and one from an unidentified conjunctivitis which may have been an infantile form of EKC. Six of the nine strains were isolated from EKC in Japan, five by us and one by Tanaka. 5 In the present study answers were sought to the following questions: 1. What is the best technique for isolation of adenovirus Type 8? 2. How often can it be isolated from clinical EKC? 3. How long after onset can it be isolated from active cases of EKC? 4.
