Abstract

This article cites a study that determined the species of Rhynchosporium (R.) occurring on Lolium (L.) multiflorum, their relative frequency, and the host range of common isolates. The variation between and within cultivars was assessed with a view to increasing the level of resistance in L. multiflorum by breeding. R. orthosporum was isolated from L. multiflorum from breeders' plots at Aberystwyth, Wales twice as often as R. secalis. Of 20 genotypes of L. multiflorum, 17 ranked similarly for level of resistance to both pathogen species.

Abstract

This article introduces uncommon plant diseases and pests in Great Britain. A powdery mildew disease occurring on Veronica longifolia var. subsessilis in Buckinghamshire, England in 1934, was briefly mentioned. Immature perithecia were found and the fungus was identified as apparently Sphaerotheca fuliginea Salm. In addition, lesions suspected to be due to Rhynchosporium orthosporum were seen on plants of Lolium perenne from the headland of a field under wheat.

Abstract

This article discusses the occurrence of Rhynchosporium orthosporum on Italian Ryegrass. In the second week of March 1960, stunted plants of S22 and HI strains of Italian ryegrass, Lolium miiltiflorum, were seen in a nine-acre field at Wadhurst in East Sussex, England. The foliage was chlorotic, with the older leaves brown and shrivelled. Affected plants were in several patches about one or two yards in diameter. Examination of individual leaves showed light green or greyish areas with irregular dark-brown margins and bearing cylindrical conidia which were mostly one-septate.

Abstract

Leaf scald of rice (Rhynchosporium oryzae Hashioka & Yokogi) is reported from Brunei. The influence of cultivation system and fertiliser regime on the severity of the disease is discussed. The presence of adequate nitrogen appears to increase the severity of the disease. Leaf scald has the potential of becoming a serious threat to rice in the area.

Abstract

The subcuticular phase in the development of Rhynchosporium leaf blotch of barley was studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. After direct penetration of the cuticle, hyphae grow beneath the cuticle in the region which is rich in pectic substances, often growing along the line where adjacent epidermal cells meet. The cuticle over the hyphae is stretched but not ruptured and there is only localized disruption of the cell wall. Appositions of cell wall material occur on the inner surface of the epidermal cell wall. Close to subcuticular hyphae, short lengths of the plasmalemma of epidermal cells may be separated from the cell wall. The epidermal cells collapse and, in the underlying mesophyll cells, the chloroplasts show degenerative changes.

Abstract

Spores of Rhynchosporium secalis (Oudem.) J. J. Davis produced a self-inhibitor of germination, the effectiveness of which was increased by increasing concentration, and decreased by the increasing availability to the spores of exogenous nutrients. Barley leaves provided a source of exogenous nutrients irrespective of their susceptibility to Rhynchosporium (leaf blotch).

Abstract

SUMMARY Rhynchosporium orthosporum was isolated from Lolium multifiorum from breeders’ plots at Aberystwyth twice as often as R. secalis. R. orthosporum from Dactylis glomerata, L. multiflorum or L. perenne would infect only the host genus from which it was isolated. R. secalis from L. multiflorum would produce symptoms not only on L. perenne, but on Hordeum sativum as well. Significantly, this was of race U.K.1, the most common race on H. sativum. Of 20 genotypes of L. multifiorum cv. RvP, 17 ranked similarly for level of resistance to both pathogen species. However, the remaining three genotypes were resistant to one, but markedly susceptible to the other. Progeny of selected resistant genotypes were far more resistant than the original cultivar. This suggests that there are reasonable prospects for resistance breeding.
