Over the past decade there has been increasing interest in the psychiatric aspects of maintenance hemodialysis. In this presentation I shall review the problems in psychosocial adaptation to this treatment modality, emphasizing patient response but touching upon the reactions of those involved in the care of the patient with end-stage renal failure.
