The radiation for a three-dimensional problem of brittle fracture is investigated. A crack is presumed to nucleate at a point in an infinite pre-stressed elastic medium, and the crack subsequently grows steadily with subsonic rupture velocities, maintaining the shape of an ellipse. Shear stresses are relieved by the crack, and exact solutions are derived for the acceleration and stress-rate (at every point of the medium) in terms of single integrals and algebraic expressions. The solutions are evaluated analytically at wavefronts and singularities, and numerically, at different points in the medium, for different growth rates of the crack.

This article shows how the random walk drainage network simulation model might be used as a class teaching exercise. Practical instructions about running the model are given and the results discussed. A source of directional bias in the resulting simulated drainage patterns is identified and given an interpretation in the terms of the model. Three points of educational value concerning the model are emphasized in conclusion.

INTRODUCTION Many excellent papers have been written in recent years on the subject of hyperparathyroidism, but there is little to be found in the literature regarding acute hyperparathyroidism or parathyroid crisis. A review of the available literature reveals only 14 cases to have been reported thus far, and in the majority of these the diagnosis was established only after the patient's death. Of the few cases in which the condition was diagnosed while the patient was still alive, in only two instances was the patient given the benefit of emergency parathyroidectomy. In this paper we should like to emphasize the importance of immediate surgery in the patient with hyperparathyroidism who develops an acute parathyroid crisis. We should also like to review briefly the cases reported and to point out their great similarity of symptomatology which should lead the physician to suspect that he is dealing with a case of acute

The Spencer-Fano method of moments is extended to make possible numerical computation of the transport of radiation from point or line sources in media whose macroscopic cross sections depend on one Cartesian coordinate. Convergence is satisfactory if the scattering angular distribution is a low-order polynomial in cosθ. Sample calculations of the scalar flux and total upward current per unit area are presented for a point source at the center of a plane-parallel slab two mean free paths thick.

A previously proposed modified form of diffusion theory [ Phys. Rev.100, 517 ( 1955)] is applied to problems involving point sources and plane clouds over an absorbing ground. A general but formal solution is first presented. Some analytic results are then obtained for a point source at the edge of a semi-infinite (half-space) cloud; specific formulas are given for the photon density at the edge of the cloud and for the net photon current there; asymptotic results are obtained for large distances inside the cloud along the source axis. Finally, numerical results are presented for the photon density at the mid-plane of an infinite plane cloud with thickness equal to two (transport) mean free paths and a point source at the center. An appendix summarizes analytic results of the modified theory for: a point source in an infinite medium, a point source at the center of a finite sphere, the albedo and transmission of an infinite plane slab with parallel (“solar”) illumination at an arbitrary angle, the albedo of the combination of a plane cloud over a ground plane with arbitrary albedo, and a rough analysis of ambient light levels in the ocean.
