The article discusses the ways to create the optimum professional development atmosphere in a public accounting firm. Some supervisors and firm administrators take too restricted a view of the meaning-and potential-of "on- the-job" training. Job-related training by supervisors has more potential than all other forms of firm-supported training combined. While on-the-job training is widely acclaimed, it does not always get the quality of support that it needs--and its implications are not always understood. Many supervising accountants do not realize that virtually everything they do on the job has training implications. The effective of on-the-job training depends on a development atmosphere in the firm. Such an atmosphere tells the firm supervisors that training their men is their most important duty. It tells the men that self-development is a way of life in the firm--the high road to the future. Administrative arrangements in the firm that persuade supervisors that they do in fact have time on the job to train.
