This is a preliminary report on the treatment of 7 patients with multiple myeloma with antimony compounds. The therapeutic trial was based on the fact that multiple myeloma is frequently associated with hyperglobulinemia, a characteristic shared with other diseases in which antimony had been found therapeutically effective. The results obtained thus far are insufficient to warrant conclusions, although they indicate a possible influence of antimony on myeloma tissue. This influence is seen mainly as an increased radiosensitivity when patients are subsequently treated with x-rays.

Bone marrow was obtained in living patients for the first time in 1903 independently by Pianese1 and Wolff.2 These authors punctured the femur and the tibia respectively in search of another diagnostic aid in detecting parasitic infestation. At first this method of bone marrow study didnot gain much recognition, since these sites of puncture in adults normally contain little active marrow and therefore failed to prove of diagnostic value in hematologic investigation.It was only twenty years later that interest in bone marrow studies in vivo was reawakened when Seyfarth3 in 1923 trephined the sternum and ribs in order to obtain hemopoietically active bone marrow. It remained for Arinkin4 further to simplify the procedure by introducing in 1928 the technic of aspiration of the sternum, rendering examination of bone marrow a readily available and routine hematologic procedure. SIR JAMES PAGET'S classic report1 on osteitis deformans was followed by numerous investigations2 which have established the protean clinical manifestations, the specific pathological picture, the biochemical alteration, and the roentgenographic abnormalities which characterize this condition whose causation still remains obscure. Although the clinical diagnosis is often made readily, at times there may be great difficulty in differentiating Paget's disease from other bone disorders, especially from osteoblastic cancer metastases.3In this communication, hitherto undescribed cell findings in bone marrow aspirates will be reported. These cell findings were noted in eight consecutive cases of Paget's disease and consist of large mononuclear cells and giant multinucleated syncytial forms, both of which have unique morphological characteristics. The detailed cytology of these cells and their significance will be presented below. IT WAS indicated by one of us (M. A. R.) in a previous report1 that aspiration of bone marrow from the iliac crest may at times provide information not obtained from simultaneous aspiration of the sternal marrow in such infiltrative diseases of the hematopoietic system as multiple myeloma, metastatic cancer to bone, and lymphatic leukemia. In these conditions the iliac marrow often appeared to be involved earlier and more frequently than the sternal marrow. Only a few patients with metastatic cancer were included in this previous study of the relative merits of iliac and sternal marrow aspirations. PRESENT STUDY The present study is a report on 100 consecutive patients admitted to the Division of Neoplastic Diseases of Montefiore Hospital.
