Summary Salvadora persica L. grows on the Eastern shore of the Sinai peninsula in a prostrate form giving rise to the formation of sand hillocks. It is described how branches of the tree are prepared for the use as toothbrush by the Bedouin. The anatomical structure of the branches predisposes them for their use as a toothbrush. Bundles composed of vessels embedded in a tissue of thick walled xylem fibres are separated from each other by thin walled xylem parenchyma with included phloem. When beaten these soft tissues are destroyed and the remaining strands of xylem fibres and vessels form the bristles of the toothbrush.
