Significant efforts have been made to develop cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) varieties resistant to Striga gesnerioides in Burkina Faso. Despite these efforts, the resistant genotypes developed still express differential responses to Striga gesnerioides in different zones of the country. This suggests existence of intraspecific variability within the parasite. The objective of this study was to assess the intraspecific variability of cowpea genotypes to Striga gesnerioides infection in Burkina Faso. Ten cowpea varieties were screened over two consecutive years, under artificial infestation with 30 ecotypes of Striga seeds at Kamboinsé research station, in a screenhouse in Burkina Faso. Cowpea varieties used included Moussa local, Komsaré and KVx404-8-1, which are susceptible to all Striga ecotypes; and varieties B301, IT93K-693-2 and IT82D-849, which are free from all Striga ecotypes infestation. Cowpea varieties Tiligré, 524B, local Gorom and Niizwè had specific reactions depending on the ecotypes. The study highlights the existence of varietal specificities according to the geographical origin of Striga gesnerioides seeds. The structuring of the intraspecific diversity showed five biotypes, of which three were clearly identified as SG1, SG5 and SG Kp races; and two biotypes could not be identified. Although this study did not allow for a clear determination of the racial affiliation of the two new biotypes, it offers the possibility of developing new strategies to control Striga by focusing on the selection of resistant varieties based on regional specificities of Striga races in each agricultural zone.

Industry itself is based on the transformation of agricultural raw materials. The national Ivorian development is plannified by specialized State Companies : the SODEPALM, for instance, is responsible of the Palm Tree Planning. The good success of the enterprise is owed to scientific researches and well stiffed producers. The natural, historical and financial factors have been mobilized by the official Party, by a numerous immigrated manpower and by the per- sonnal impulse of President Houphouet-Boigny. The level reached by development brings up new problems, and following solutions are looked at : regionalization of the State Companies, a new effort towards food-producing crops, struggle against the lowering of money, and so on. In short, the development of Ivory Coast is by no mean miraculous : it only results from good planning and acting help by the State., Résumé. - L'économie ivoirienne connaît depuis l'Indépendance une croissance à la japonaise, dont l'agriculture est le moteur principal. L'industrie elle-même est avant tout fondée sur la transformation de matières premières agricoles. Cette croissance est l'élément essentiel d'un développement national planifié dont des Sociétés d'Etat, spécialisées dans un produit ou un groupe de produits, ont la responsabilité : la SODEPALM, responsable du plan palmier, en est le modèle le plus achevé. Leur succès est le fruit de choix rationnels, fondés sur les résultats de la recherche scientifique et un strict encadrement des producteurs. Les facteurs naturels, historiques et financiers favorables ont été mobilisés grâce à l'action d'encadrement du Parti, à l'accueil d'une abondante main-d'œuvre de migrants et à une volonté politique incarnée par le Président Houphouet-Boigny. L'étape atteinte par le développement pose de nouveaux problèmes qu'on envisage de régler par la régionalisation des Sociétés d'Etat, un nouvel effort de recherche sur les cultures vivrières, la lutte contre la détérioration des termes de l'échange, etc. Bref, le développement ivoirien n'a rien d'un « miracle » mais est le résultat d'un effort planifié et d'une organisation où l'Etat joue le rôle primordial., Sawadogo Abdoulaye.
