The objective was to develop a seven-inch and nine-inch ultra-high-resolution cathode-ray tube capable of delivering 10 microamperes into a spot of 5-microns diameter at the half-intensity points. The tube will utilize spiral focusing lenses, assisted by magnetic focusing, and an FRM electron gun. (Author), See also Quarterly rept. no. 7, AD-807 347L.

The Image-Motion-Compensating Orthicon (IMCO) was redesigned to operate with second-order focusing. This has resulted in better conservation of geometry and in a 50% increase of useable diameter on the photocathode. Maximum deflection voltage is down to approximately 200 volts from over 500 volts previously. (Author)

Efforts were continued on a development program that will lead to the design of an electrical-output electron-beam-scanned camera tube with electronically- immobilized electron image upon its scanned target for television reconnaissance applications from a moving vehicle, e.g., and airborne, high-speed, low-altitude carrier. The technique of gating the meshless image-section in the IMC-Orthicon (IMCO) has been greatly simplified by pulsing the photocathode (PC) rather than the anodes of the system. A high-voltage diode-clamp to secure proper voltage levels during pulsing is described. Image-coincidence testing by electronic switch gives improved results by a control of ellipticity which acts upon the orthogonality of deflection. A moving-image film transport has been constructed, along with a slow-scan generator for motion compensation by IMCO. (Author)

This report describes progress on the development of a 7-in. and 9-in.-diameter ultra-high-resolution flying-spot-scanner tubes. A proportional control circuit for reducing cathode-current flow in FRM devices during modulation is described. Test data on three narrow-beam-angle FRM microgun experiments are presented. An experimental tube has been constructed that demonstrates 3000 lines-per-in. resolution in the 7-in. configuration. (Author)

Special circuitry for gating and deflecting the IMCO tube has been developed. It includes high-level d.c. feedback amplifiers for deflection (1200 volts c.t.), gating-pulse generators (up to 1000-volt pulse), and associated circuitry. Images can be shifted and then superimposed to test for coincidence and registry. This can be done on fixed and moving objects. Typical circuit features are described. Progress in tube construction and fixturing also is presented. (Author)

The 5-in UHR tube uses a two-spiral optical system for focus and collimation. At 18KV, it puts an average of 4muA through a spot of 1/3 mil. This resolution is fully preserved within a 4-in screen diameter by three dynamic corrections: one for focus and two for astigmatism. An analog computer derives these signals from deflection, using a new type of product-generator called the Roving-Square Tube (RST). Spotsize and shape are measured objectively by a new type of spot-dissector, using crossed slits and circular sweep. Errors from phosphor decay are eliminated by subcarrier modulation at 10 megacycles. Twelve ultra-high-resolution (UHR) tubes, plus the magnetic components required to operate them, were constructed. Image Sections for Image Motion Compensation (IMC) were built and judged by visual inspection. An image projected within a circle of about 1.5 inch, or 75% of cathode diameter, can be kept immobilized at center of target by electrostatic (e.s.) deflection factor is 550 volts/inch KV. Details about the tube and focus field are given, including means to blank the image by a shutter mesh. (Author)
