Having been trained in the self-actualizing psychology of Maclow and Rogers, humanists equate competence-based education and counseling with behaviorism and therefore resist the demand for performance criteria and the adjunct a behavioral principles. This article suggests a behavioral humanism as the desired solution to the dilemma and proposes some guidelines for formulating and implementing such a synthetic system without jeopardizing one's personal-professional integrity. 6. Physical Education: Trends in Secondary School.

Abstract

The article presents information on the efforts made in creating interest for physical education among young students in the U.S. The American Medical Association constantly points to the importance of the fitness of youth through its various publications and in its convention topics. The American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation has taken an important leadership role in the improvement of the fitness of youth. Teacher training institutions have upgraded their programs to better prepare their graduates for conditions they will meet. Testing is now receiving more attention than formerly. The American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation's "Youth Fitness Test," is now universally employed, and the national norms are quite current and readily available for comparison. Results of tests should be made known to students and to their parents. Self-testing is encouraged in the better programs. Television is contributing to new attitudes among students. Through it they observe exceptional performances in national and international sports events such as gymnastics, soccer and Olympic competition. Other news media are also stimulating interest in this field.

Abstract

Observations made in and along the shores of the Connecticut River, near Hanover, New Hampshire, showed that the water temperature decreased from +14C on 23 October to +3.5 degrees on 21 November 1968. The river froze over on 10 December 1968 and the ice water cover midriver was 9 to 11 in. thick on 16 January 1969. The water temperature beneath the ice sheet decreased from 2.3C to 0C just below the surface between 4 and 18 December 1968 and remained so down to a 15-ft depth until observations ended on 22 January 1969. These persistent near-freezing temperatures in the river were attributed to mixing caused by the constant flow of water beneath the ice sheet. (Author)
