Some general ideas on the nature of futures studies are applied to the particular case of visual communication. This area is construed to comprise all processes of information transfer involving an element of visual perception. The morphologic analysis yields a suggested systems structure which can serve as a framework for speculation on dynamic properties, i.e. possible developments of restructuring in the technologies of any process of visual communication. Some important examples of psychological and sociological probelems are discussed briefly, indicating that particular care has to be taken in defining a wide enough systems delimination in deciding policies for the development and use of new technologies and for measures necessitated by their impact.
