A 2 cm long necrotic segment was resected from the left half of the proximal cervical trachea in a 7–year–old Dachshund. Tracheal reconstruction was provided by an onlay graft of knitted polypropylene mesh. The only sequel noted was an exercise–induced cough for the first 2 post–operative weeks. To date (3 months after surgery) there is no evidence of tracheal stenosis, graft rejection or tracheal collapse at the surgical site and normal appearing epithelium is covering the entire graft. Une greffe appliquee de tricot de poly-propylene a fourni la reconstruction tracheale. Les seules sequelles notees ont ete une toux induite par exercise pendant les deux premieres semaines postoperatoires. Jusqu'ici (3 mois apres chirurgie) il n'y a aucune evidence de stenose tracheale, de rejection de la greffe ou de collapsus tracheal a l'endrout chirurgique et l'epithelium normal qui apparait couvre la greffe entiere. Zusammenfassung. Ein 2 cm langes abgestorbenes Segmentum von der linken Halfte der proximalen zervikalen Trachea in einem 7 jahrigen Dachshund wurde reseziert. Tracheale Rekonstruktion wurde durch ein aufgelegtes Transplantat von gestricktem Polypropylen-Netzgewebe beschaffen. Die einzige Folgeerscheinung die man feststellte, war ein Husten in den ersten zwei postoperativen Wochen, der durch Ubung und Auslauf veranlasst war. Bis jetzt (3 Monate nach der Operation) sind keine Anzeichen von trachealer Verengung, Transplantatab-weisung oder trachealem Kollaps an der operierten Stelle bemerkt worden und normal erscheinendes Epithelium uberdeckt das ganze Transplantat.

The conventional treatment for squamous carcinoma of the vulva with negative nodes (N0) is radical vulvectomy and bilateral node dissections. Approximately 20–30% of N0 patients will have involved nodes in the surgical specimen. The morbidity/mortality added by the node dissections may be considerable, especially for the two of three patients who are not aided by the procedure. Radical vulvectomy followed by elective node irradiation of 4500 R in 5 weeks has been used in six patients. The treatment combination is well tolerated with no node failures, no radiation complications, no delay in healing of the surgical site, and an average hospitalization of 13 days.

SummaryWeanling Osborne Mendel male rats had one or both inguinal fat depots, or one or both testicular fat depots removed. Another group was subjected to an identical operation but the fat pads were not excised (sham operated). Postsurgically, the rats were fed a high fat diet with progressive obesity developing during the 32 weeks of the experiment. Mean food intakes, growth rates and percentage of body fat (36 to 41%) were similar for all groups of rats. The surgically removed fat depots did not regenerate. In the group with the inguinal fat depots removed there was a visible depression at the surgical site due to the absence of the fat pad. Abdominal fat depots shifted to compensate for the removed testicular depots with no disfiguration apparent in the live rat. At autopsy, fat depots such as interscapular, axillary, perirenal and retroperitoneal, omental and mesenteric, and xiphoid weighed the same in operated and sham-operated rats.

A case report has been presented to emphasize the importance of follow-up examinations. A 14-year-old girl was operated on for removal of a dentigerous cyst of the mandible. The postoperative healing was rapid and satisfactory until a small radiolucent area appeared in the alveolus. This area was enucleated 21 months after the first operation, and the lesion was found to be an ameloblastoma. There was no further evidence of tumor over the following 9 years. In view of the excellent immediate postoperative course, this young patient could easily have been discharged as cured after a few months. A long-term follow-up seemed advisable, however, and after nearly 2 years a tumor was found in the original surgical site.

A case of traumatic bone cyst of the body of the mandible in a 24-year-old woman is presented. This lesion had been treated surgically on three prior occasions and had not resolved. The two mandibular premolars and the first molar were found to be involved in the cystlike cavity and were endodontically treated during the second and third surgical procedures. The treatment reported here consisted of the removal of four nonvital teeth involved in the lesion, placement of a homograft of freeze-dried cancellous bone chips, and primary closure of the surgical site. Clinical and roentgenographic examinations 6 months following this procedure showed satisfactory healing of the traumatic bone cyst.

Increased uptake of 99mTc-pp was observed in 10 patients after radical mastectomy. This unilateral localized increased activity was centered at the surgical site. The lack of tissue absorption of the low energy gamma photons of 99mTc-pp due to the absence of chest wall tissue accounted for this activity. Studies of normal patients and patients with simple mastectomies did not show this finding. A routine breast examination is recommended prior to interpreting 99mTc-pp bone scans of patients with breast cancer.

A technique was described for constructing a custom-fitted mandibular implant using a surgical chrome-cobalt alloy. The design of the implant employs three sections. A series of body sections are constructed presurgically for ease of alignment of the prosthesis. Two abutment castings are fabricated at the time of surgery using the “Shell Casting Technique”, a rapid casting procedure for metals. The prosthesis (1) meets the needs of the surgical site, (2) accurately fits the mandibular abutments, (3) is nontoxic to the tissues, and (4) is constructed during the surgical operation.

Because of a lack of necessary equipment, Dr. Irving Schonberg 1 first used ethyl chloride in the removal of servicemen's verrucae. For the past year we have adopted a modification of his method and extended its use to the removal of verrucae, keratoses, fibromas, nevi to which it was applicable, skin tags and other benign growths. Ethyl chloride is sprayed on the affected surgical site until a frost appears. The site develops a boardlike hardness, and then quickly small sharp scissors are employed to remove the surface of the lesion. On completion of this procedure the site of the growth attains its normal texture. Then curettage is employed when indicated, and the base of the lesion is lightly touched with 50 per cent trichloroacetic acid. The entire procedure takes about 15 seconds and is especially adaptable for children. Caution should be taken not to employ electrosurgical methods when ethyl chloride
