The article relates the story of 19th-century jockey Alicia Meynell Thornton, wife of Colonel Thomas Thornton in England. She won her first informal race against Captain William Flint which was prompted by an argument over which had the better horse. She lost her first proper race against Flint but won another over leading jockey Frank Buckle. She accused Flint of not treating her with the proper courtesy in a letter which appeared in the September 1804 issue of "York Herald."
