There are certain inherent problems, such as the factor of public attitudes and the vital time element, related to the requesting of anatomical gifts for transplantation purposes. In addition, there is little in medical education to aid the physician regarding the nonmedical aspects of dying, the dead and the survivors of the deceased. Some guidelines for the physician in dealing with these factors and their ramifications as they relate to the requesting of anatomical gifts are discussed.
