Fractions rich in connective tissue, containing a complex mixture of antigens, were prepared separately by sonic vibration from 6 term pregnancy placentas complicated by severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. As a control, 6 selected term normal placentas were used. Rabbit antisera to these antigens were prepared after intense immunization. It was found that the toxemic placental connective tissue contains all the antigens found in the normal placental connective tissues and two additional antigens. These antigens associated with toxemia of pregnancy were absent, or present in very small amounts, in placentas after uncomplicated gestation. With the fluorescent antibody technique, some differences were shown in the staining pattern of the blood vessels and the stroma of the toxemic placentas. It was concluded that toxemia of pregnancy indicates connective tissue disturbances in the fetal-placental unit.

Two cases of severe pre-eclampsia with hemolytic anemia are presented. The laboratory tests confirmed microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. The literature is reviewed and a new theory is suggested to explain the pathophysiology of the hemolysis in this complication of pregnancy.

Solutions for laminar and turbulent boundary layers are arrived at by means of the integral method. These show that the nonuniformity in acceleration results in distributions (along the plate) for the local heat transfer coefficient and boundary layer thickness which differ from the classical case of uniform acceleration. For the laminar boundary layer under nonuniform acceleration, these distributions yield results for uniform surface heat flux which are identical with those for uniform surface temperature. However, for the turbulent boundary layer, this identity does not apply.
