1. [The Environment: Agriculture and Health Perspectives.]

Abstract

On January 1, 1970, President Nixon signed into law a bill establishing a national policy to maintain conditions of the environment under which man and nature can exist in productive harmony. In keeping with this, the 1970 National Agricultural Outlook Conference was held, at which the 2 speeches presented in this document were delivered. The first speech, "Environment: The Health Perspective," discusses averting an environmental catastrophe. The second speech, "The Environment and Agriculture," undertakes to answer the following questions about environment: (1) What is it? (2) What are the major factors and interactions determining quality of environment? (3) What is its present condition? (4) What is agriculture's contribution, actual and potential, beneficial and detrimental, to quality of environment? (5) What is being done to improve quality of environment? (6) What kind of environment do we want? It is concluded that efficiency of agriculture is a major determinant in quality of rural, urban, local, and global environments. Agricultural pollution can be resolved by development and application of systems which are technologically effective and socially and economically acceptable. (AN)

2. Transparency Masters for Crop and Weed Identification. Final Report.

Abstract

Instructional aids produced from these transparency masters and the accompanying narrative may be used by vocational agriculture teachers in presenting courses in plant science. They were developed by subject matter specialists and teacher educators as part of a project designed to test effects of involving vocational agriculture teachers in development and experimental use of instructional materials. Included with the transparencies are introductory material on the project, the method of research, and the results, as well as recommended uses of the masters and teaching suggestions. The transparencies are grouped under five subject areas: (1) General Plant Morphology and Structure, (2) Cereal Crops, (3) Legumes, (4) Grasses, and (5) Weed Identification. Samples of letters and questionnaires used in the research are appended. (AW)

Abstract

This learning activity pac contains information to help the teachers of high school vocational agriculture in the instructional area of agronomy. Each of the two main sections, grain crops and weeds and controls, includes teacher and student units for the section lessons. Teacher units include special instructions--equipment needed (film projector, screen), material needed (seed samples, contact paper), and media needed (filmstrips, texts, pamphlets); learning objectives; pre- and posttests; and answer keys. Student units contain learning objectives, learning activities, and a self-test. Additional learning activities are provided at the end of each student unit. In addition to these elements, the weeds and controls teacher unit includes a bibliography and the student unit contains a "find the word" puzzle. A short description of the pilot program which developed this package is also provided. (CT)

Described in this guide are the emergent and semiemergent plants most likely to be found in inland and coastal marshes. The guide is intended for field identification of marsh plants without resources to technical botanical keys. The plants are discussed in seven groups. Within each group the kinds which resemble one another most closely are next to each other. To identify a plant one first finds the group in which it fits, then finds a drawing and description that matches it. Each description is headed by a common name and a scientific name. The article reports on how insects were able to control the infestation of the weed Hypericum perforatum, commonly known as Klamath weed. Klamath weed, which originated in Europe, is capable of spreading very fast, thus depreciating the value of the land where it grew. Leaf-eating beetle species which include Chrysolina gemellata are found to be effective in controlling this type of weed.
