Abstract

A positron emission transverse tomograph device was developed which provides transaxial sectional images of the distribution of positron-emitting radionuclides in the heart. The images provide a quantitative three-dimensional map of the distribution of activity unencumbered by the superimposition of activity originating from regions overlying and underlying the plane of interest. PETT is used primarily with the cyclotron-produced radionuclides oxygen-15, nitrogen-13 and carbon-11. Because of the participation of these atoms in metabolism, they can be used to label metabolic substrates and intermediary molecules incorporated in myocardial metabolism.

24. The Pattern of Lung Disease Associated With Alphai Antitrypsin Deficiency

Abstract

Seven patients with a severe deficiency of α1-antitrypsin have been studied. These patients represented three families; four were female and three were male. Although two were asymptomatic, they all demonstrated obstructive pulmonary disease, low carbon monoxide diffusing capacity, hypoxia, and elevated alveolo-arterial PO2 gradients. Hypercapnia was present in one patient. Chest films and lung scans demonstrated decreased vascularity in the lower lung fields. These findings are consistent with panacinar emphysema, and no evidence of bullous emphysema was found. The onset of symptoms at an early age, equal sex incidence, and the above features characterize the syndrome of familial α1-antitrypsin deficiency and chronic lung disease.

Abstract

A combined gas-liquid chromatograph, effluent counter, effluent flow-meter, and automatic data collection device is described which can be used for the analysis and assay of gas mixtures containing isotopes of short half-life. The data are collected in a form compatible for computer correction and evaluation. An example using 11 C-containing compounds is given. The device is useful for research with organic compounds and inorganic gases containing such isotopes as tritium, 11C, 14C, 13N, 15O, most of the active halogens, 31Si, and 32P. Some 35 S-containing compounds can also be studied.

Abstract

Hemoglobin affinity for oxygen and red cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) were evaluated in relation to other parameters of oxygen transport in experimental hemorrhagic and endotoxic shock. Eight rhesus monkeys were studied before and at intervals for 4 hr after the development of shock induced by the administration of Escherichia coli endotoxin. Seven other animals were phlebotomized to produce hemodynamically comparable hemorrhagic shock. The two groups had similar reductions in blood pressure and cardiac output. Oxygen consumption was unchanged during the study. Hemoglobin concentration was reduced in both groups but to a greater degree in those in hemorrhagic shock. The most striking physiological difference in parameters measured was more severe metabolic acidosis in the endotoxin group. The animals in hemorrhagic shock had a uniform increase in P50 (mean increase 2.9 mm Hg). The animals in endotoxin shock varied considerably with no significant change in P50. No consistent or statistically significant changes in 2,3-DPG were observed in either group. It is unlikely that 2,3-DPG-related changes in P50 play a major role in augmenting oxygen delivery early in experimental shock. (Author)

The lyrical strain in Shakespeare's early drama is "brought out "by Chambers in his statement that |"With Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream, it (Richard the Second) belongs to the period of a deliberate literary experiment. For the space of a tragedy, a comedy, and a history, Shakespeare essayed to write drama in the lyrical vein, with his singing robe a on, with an abundance of passionate and highly coloured speech, and with the aid of rhyme and other devices of lyrical utterance." |Chambers expresses the opinion that Richard the Second is unlike the history play, Henry the Sixth; A Midsummer Nights Dream is different from that of As You Like It; and Romeo and Juliet is quite dissimilar to that of Hamlet or Macbeth, in that Richard the Second, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Romeo and Juliet are treated of in light, airy, lyrical passages.
