Extract: Twelve children ranging between 8 and 13 years of age who had been hospitalized for burns, their mothers, 12 control children, and 12 control mothers matched for age, sex, socioeconomic status, and the experience of hospitalization were administered a battery of psychologic tests 1.5–5 years after the burn accidents. This effort produced few differences between burned children and their matched control children. However, the mothers of burned children were found to be significantly more distressed than their matched controls on 10 of 28 study variables.Speculation: It is hypothesized that either burn victims' mothers were disturbed prior to the accident and possibly contributed to it or that the emotional sequelae to burns are more extensive with parents (mothers) than with children. It is suggested that more medical and/or emotionally supportive care be considered for the parents of burn victims, with a particular emphasis on restoring appropriate self and role perceptions. Consideration should also be given to feelings of parental insufficiency and unconscious hostility toward the child.

Two 8-month-old, Caucasian male infants with long-standing difficulties in decannulation following tracheostomy were subjected to a program designed to facilitate a return to normal breathing. Both infants had previously experienced numerous unsuccessful attempts at decannulation; they possessed a tolerance for breathing normally for a period of less than five minutes. After a 3-week behaviorial treatment program, their ability to breathe normally rapidly improved when the tracheostomy cannula was occluded. At the end of treatment, the patients progressed from a tolerance of less than 5 minutes to 36 continuous hours of occlusion, and the cannula was successfully removed without complication. The patients have fared well since that time.

158 male and 80 females representing 4 fraternities and 3 sororities at a large state-supported university in the Southwest were administered Duncan's Personality Integration Reputation Testand 48 additional sociometric items. on the basis of their content validity and correlation with Duncan's scale, 30 of the 48 items were selected for a test of personal effectiveness. The correlation of the total of these 30 items with Duncan's scale was .92 for males and .90 for females. The 30 items plus 6 from Duncan's scale, gave similar rs (.93, .91). The major advantage of the new scale lies in greater appeal to users who might be prejudiced against a 6-item instrument. Estimates of reliability and validity are needed.

Sixteen 150-day-old male albino rats were trained over a 30-day period. They experienced 15 14-hr. periods of food deprivation in a unique environment consisting of a striped box with sandpaper floor and blinking overhead lighting. During testing Ss ate significantly less during and after exposure to the distinctive cues. Although the results failed to demonstrate the establishment of the predicted secondary motivator, the experimental manipulations had an obvious effect on Ss' eating behavior. It was suggested that, when cues are associated with a strong drive state which is never reduced in the presence of the cues, these cues acquire a noxious quality which produces a type of avoidance behavior incompatible with eating.

The purpose of this study was threefold: (1) to evaluate the visual-perceptual skills of deaf and of hearing children; (2) to compare the performances of the two groups on two tests frequently used to assess intellectual functioning; and (3) to compare the performance of deaf children in a day school with those in a residential school. Results indicate deaf children are not inferior to hearing children on visual-perceptual tasks and day-school deaf children performed better than residential deaf children. Differences between the deaf and hearing on the two tests were significant on 3 of the 10 subtests. In addition, normative scores on at least one subtest of the Nebraska appear too high, and correction may be in order. Correlations between the two tests, for both deaf and hearing children, were low.
