Yang-Mills' field is generalized to possess a nontrivial scalar part. The most general transformations for such a field under the 3-parameter isotopic gauge transformation is obtained. Using this generalized gauge field, a gauge invariant Lagrangian is constructed within the framework of the quark model. Interactions for spin-1 as well as for spin-0 are generated. As a further application a weak interaction theory mediated by the generalized gauge (boson) field is formulated. The entire weak interactions are generated in two halfs; the hadron-boson interaction is generated according to Yang-Mills' trick using the generalized gauge field and the other half (boson-lepton, etc.) is then generated by making use of the scalar part of the gauge fields according to the conventional pion gauge principle. The effective Lagrangian is then found to be mediated by the effective propagators which fall off as p −2 at high momenta; the unitarity of the theory can thereby be insured. Universality in weaker sense than the usual one is applied to the intermediate bosons; our theory for β-decay then reduces to Cabibbo's at low energy.

In this work, we have formulated a quantum field theory with the following features: (1) it is free of divergences and also free of the unphysical procedure of renormalization; (2) the interaction can be specified in our dynamical equation; (3) it gives consistent (renormalized) results for a renormalizable interaction; and (4) it is also applicable to a nonrenormalizable interaction. Our formulation assumes the Bogoliubov causality condition, the strong unitarity condition, the asymptotic condition, the completeness of the in-field (or out-field) and Lorentz covariance. The off-as well as on-mass-shell values play an important role in our formulation and they are treated carefully by employing the operator derivatives with respect to the in-field which satisfies the weak (or ordinary) free-field equation. A dynamical equation which determines all S -matrix elements is developed. The specification of interactions is made in this equation. It is then shown that finite perturbative solutions exist to any order and that the scattering matrix elements can be obtained by imposing suitable boundary conditions. No restrictions on the types of interactions appear in our formulation and, therefore, the same procedure can be carried out for renormalizable as well as for non-renormalizable interactions. For renormalizable interactions, in particular, our dynamical equation reduces to the one previously proposed by Pugh.

More general functional derivatives for vector mesons are introduced. As an application, a finite theory is formulated for neutral vector fields based on the ``strong'' Lorentz condition together with the other usual assumptions of asymptotic quantum field theory.

The following is a summary of Mr. Wu, Chen-chung's paper, and is given here so that the American entomologists can have a better understanding of the problems that confront the Chinese entomologist. The work deals with the distribution, life history, causes of outbreaks, and control measures against the cotton aphid. The author's personal experiences in the extension of the new control measures in Hopei province, during 1936, are fully discussed.–A.E.M.
