Abstract

IN OUR previous paper, on "a case of hepatolenticular degeneration,"1 we reported that we could confirm the definite increase of copper excretion in the urine and could demonstrate that dimercaprol (BAL) treatment gave rise to the marked increase of copper excretion. In this paper we report histochemical findings in the liver and brain in Wilson's disease (hepatolenticular degeneration). Recently, case reports of Wilson's disease are appearing rather frequently in Japan, and we were able to obtain five livers and two brains from autopsy materials of the School of Medicine of Tokyo, Tohoku Imperial University, Osaka University, and Saint Luke's Hospital of Tokyo. Copper granules were demonstrated histochemically in four of these five livers and in the putamen of one brain. Abstract:Micrometer measurements in the chest roentgenograms of 197 males and 168 females whose ages ranged from 10 to 80 years, showed that the relative cortical thickness of the clavicles decreased with advancing age. When the linear regression slopes of decrease for the clavicles, metacarpals and femur were compared, the steepest slope was for the clavicles, especially in females.

17. AGE‐DEPENDENT BONE LOSS AFTER GASTRECTOMY

Abstract

Clavicular cortical thickness measured in postero‐anterior chest roentgenograms was decreased in 53 patients after gastrectomy as compared with 447 males and 277 females in apparent health and 122 males and 109 females with peptic ulcer not surgically treated. This decline in clavicular cortical thickness became more pronounced as years elapsed after gastrectomy. Gastrectomy appeared to have accelerated the age‐dependent bone loss, possibly through interfering with calcium absorption and other nutritional intake.

18. Age and Calcium Metabolism in Relation to Cardiovascular Changes Induced by Renal Injury with Sodium Sulfaacetylthiazole

Abstract

Obstructive nephropathy caused by a single intraperitoneal injection of sodium sulfaacetylthiazole (SAT) in a dosage of 0.5 gm/kg body weight induced interstitial myocarditis and medial calcification with medionecrosis of the aorta in 4‐month‐old rats but not in immature 1‐month‐old rats. The calcium content of the aorta, heart and kidneys and the 24‐hour uptake of 45Ca by the aorta, heart and kidneys were significantly increased. The histological changes, the increased calcium content of the heart and aorta, and the increased uptake of 45Ca were prevented by prior parathyroidectomy. Intraosseous 45Ca two weeks after administration for the purpose of labelling the stable bone fraction, was markedly decreased by injection of SAT in rats above the age of 4 months with intact parathyroids but not in immature rats and in parathyroidectomized adult animals. Such mobilization of 45Ca in the stable bone fraction was probably promoted through the increased secretion of parathyroid hormone secondary to SAT‐induced acute renal failure.

19. AMINO ACID METABOLISM IN OSTEOPOROSIS

Abstract

To evaluate amino acid metabolism in osteoporosis, the effects of oral loading with an amino acid mixture were studied in 11 aged patients with advanced osteoporosis, 5 aged patients with mild osteoporosis, and 7 healthy aged subjects (controls). The osteoporotic patients were free of other major diseases. In all three groups the physical examination, blood chemical determinations, urinalysis and fluoroscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract gave normal findings; in particular, no liver or kidney disease was indicated by the results of function tests. A diagnosis of vertebral osteoporosis was made when the ratio of vertebral to disc density in the lateral tomogram of the lumbar spine was 1.0 or higher; in the normal subjects, the ratio was always less than 1.0. The presence of compression fracture(s) was considered to indicate severe osteoporosis, whereas the absence of such fractures graded the disease as mild.
