Reduction of europium has been investigated in acetonitrile which proceeds in two stages the first of which is due to the formation of divalent europium. Oxidation of Eu(II) has been observed in solution by water with the formation of hydrolyzed trivalent europium the reduction of which is accompanied with isolation of a basic salt Eu(OH)2·4(ClO4)0·6. It is shown that the second reduction stage is connected with amalgam formation and formation of a slightly soluble basic salt of the composition mentioned.
