1. Fine Structure of Vibrio choleraeDuring Toxin Production

Abstract

The fine structural changes associated with cell growth and toxin production have been examined in Vibrio choleraestrain 569B. No morphological alterations in the cell envelope are apparent during logarithmic growth with thin-section techniques. However, internal swelling, suggesting alteration of cell envelope permeability, is evident particularly during the late logarithmic and early stationary phases of growth. Certain extracellular material demonstrable with negative-stain techniques does appear during the period of toxin production. The possible origin of this material is discussed. The effects of high temperature (37 C) and aeration on cell structure are also examined.

2. Multiple Antibiotic Resistance due to a Single Mutation in Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Abstract

A positive correlation (r ⩾ +.47, P ⩽ .01) was found between sensitivities of 147 random clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to all possible pairs of the drugs penicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, acridine orange, and ethidium bromide. High-level resistance to streptomycin was also positively correlated with increased resistance to some of these drugs. This suggested that multiply-resistant strains are not exclusively the result of selection of independent mutants for resistance to each drug and that there may be a common mechanism for resistance to some or all of these drugs. This hypothesis was supported by the demonstration that low-level resistance to a large group of drugs (penicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, rifampin, ethidium bromide, and acridine orange) could be lost as well as restored by a single mutational event in vitro. Abstract

Environmental Control of Cell Synthesis and Function presents the proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on the Continuous Culture of Micro-organisms, held at St. Catherine's College, University of Oxford, on July 19-24, 1971. It reflects the symposium's four main areas of interest, namely, kinetics of growth, advances in equipment design and operation, influence of environment on the control of cell synthesis, and physico-chemical effects on cell structure and functioning, and some 20 individual topics. With a strong focus on the influence of chemical and physical nature of the growth environment on the structure and functioning of microbial cell, the book starts by presenting the chemostat theory, its validity, extensions, and future challenges. It goes on to discuss the progress in environmental control of continuous culture, the product formation in continuous culture, and internal and external conditions involved in its control. Chapters 3 to 8 explore the hypertrophic and continuously synchronized growths; mixed culture studies with the chemostat; kinetics of growth on aqueous-oil and aqueous-solid dispersed systems; design and operation improvements of the chemostat; and the role of turbidostat. Chapters 9 to 14 focus on the influence of environmental and cellular factors on cell physiology.
