On March 27, 1964, the great Pacific rift that circle's from the Philippines to Chile flexed its muscle and destroyed a great part of the Alaskan economy. A side effect was a series of seismic waves that radiated out across the Pacific. The press, in reporting their terrible impact on the shore, invariably described them as "tidal waves." Seismic waves axe scarcely 2 feet high as they cross the open sea but they are more than 400 miles long and move at speeds of around 500 miles an hour. As they near the shore, the water runs away from the land, then returns in an irresistible breaker perhaps 40 feet high, loaded with kinetic energy. The only possible warning of their approach must come from seismologists who have noticed the original earthquake.
