2. JOSS: CONSOLE DESIGN

Abstract

The report describes the development at RAND of a remote typewriter console for use with JOSS, RAND's personal on-line computing service, and demonstrates the extreme care that must be taken to design an acceptable console for personal use by casual users. The input/output version of the familiar IBM Selectric was selected as the central element of the console because of its excellent keyboard feel, its high-quality output at a speed of 150 words per minute, its compact size, and its relatively low noise level. Primary considerations in the design of a console to house the typewriter included dimensions required for operator comfort and convenience, console mobility, the projected number of required electronic components and their packaging, and the incorporation of the associated switches and indicator lights in a small auxiliary control box. Discussion of the physical console is followed by an overview of the logic required to enable the user and JOSS to share the typewriter productively in an interactive conversation. Finally, a detailed description of this logical design is given in hardware terms.

Abstract

This paper presents a theoretical method for constructing dimensionless interaction curves for members subjected to combined tension and bending loads that produce inelastic strains, and presents experimental results which verify the theory. Each interaction curve represents the total range of the ratios of axial load to bending moment which will cause inelastic strains to extend to a given depth in the member. Experimental interaction curves were obtained from eccentrically loaded tenison members of rectangular cross sections made from three strain hardening materials, namely annealed rail steel and aluminum alloys 24S-T4 and 75S-T6. Good agreement was found between theory and experiment. In order to design a member subjected to combined axial and bending loads by use of the interaction curves, the lateral deflection of the member must be estimated. Three orders of approximation for the lateral deflection of eccentrically loaded tension members are presented. The problem of combined bending and axial compressive loads is discussed and research based on the methods of analysis developed in this investigation is suggested for solving the buckling laod of a member subjected to combined bending and axial compressive loads. Some illustrative problems are solved in the Appendix which show how the results of this investigation may be used., See also Part 2, AD-A075 887.

Abstract

The report describes the theory of the operation of the Antenna Modeling Program delivered and implemented for the Naval Research Lab, The Rome Air Development Center, the US Army Strategic Communications Command, the Naval Ship Engineering Center, and US Army ECOM/Communications Systems. The theory and the applicability of its reduction to practical numerical techniques for the CDC3800, GE645, CDC6500, CDC6700, and B5700 machines located at the five Government facilities cited (respectively) is essentially independent of the peculiar characteristics of the machines. The Engineering Manual describes their theory and techniques and is therefore applicable to all delivered versions of the Antenna Modeling Program.

These systems along with the DSF and the DABS engineering models will become part of a test bed that will be used for development test activities in support of upgrading the Enroute and Terminal Air Traffic Control Systems.

The scrapbooks contain clippings, announcements, and a few letters relating to Krebs' business, Charleston civic affairs, and professional engineering organizations. Jenkins (b. 1870) Diaries and Photographs, 1890-1934. Eighteen diaries, 1890-1934, of Samuel R. Jenkins, a civil engineer from Grafton. There are lengthy entries for the period, 1890-1892, when Jenkins was a student at West Virginia University. He did surveys and supervised construction work in various parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, read widely, and commented on works of Henry George, John W. Draper, and John Fiske. There are photographs of Jenkins and of an engineering job done by him for the American Bridge Company at Ambridge, Pennsylvania, in 1902. There is also a student laboratory manual containing direction for a course of experiments in chemistry.

In addition to correspondence there are reports, speeches, newspaper clippings, U.S. documents, photographs, blueprints, and structural drawings of the Panama Canal, with some data on the proposed Nicaraguan Canal. Correspondents include Chapman Revercomb and Melvin C. Snyder. Included is a microfilm of an autobiographical sketch, "Some Episodes in the Life of Harry Outen Cole."
