Abstract

Unionid mussels were collected in five sampling stations in the River Ålabäcken, Scania. The five localities were very similar with regard to abiotic factors. Anodonta cygnea and A. piscinalis were most abundant at the sites near the lake mouth but decreased in number downstream, whilst the opposite was true for Unio pictorum which occurred predominantly in the stream localities. Since there are no obvious physical differences between the sampling stations, the reason of the non-random distribution of the age groups of the species may be connected with the situation of the fishes that act as hosts to the glochidia at the time the glochidia leave and go to the bottom. Abstract

This article presents information on the book "Observations on the Genus Unio; Together With Descriptions of New Species in the Family of Unionidae, and Descriptions of New Species of Other Families of Mollusks," by Isaac Lea. It is informed that Mr. Lea always had time to devote himself to the study of natural history and the eleventh volume of his "Observations on the Genus Unio," now just published, shows that, with his time more at his disposal, his zeal remains unabated. This volume contains the descriptions of sixty-two new species, which, added to those previously described, give to the "unionidae" seven hundred and thirty-six species, making a seriously long list for a student to look at. The present volume contains purely scientific descriptions, well illustrated with plates, and here and there some general observations. It possesses unusual interest from the fact that it contains descriptions of species from the most widely separated localities; Texas, Lake Winnipek, Assyria, Siam, India, and the great African water, Lake N'yassa, are all represented.
