The Sport of Orienteering Orienteering is a sport in which competitors use a map and a compass to navigate around a course of predetermined controls. In its most competitive form it can be described as navigational cross-country running, demanding a high level of physical fitness and the ability to interpret a map and use a compass quickly and accurately. At the other end of the scale, orienteering is an enjoyable outdoor activity attracting people of all ages with a high level of family participation. In this case the competitive aspect becomes less important, but the challenge of successfully completing the course still remains.
