This article develops the dual program corresponding to a hyperbolic approximation, of the constrained multi-facility location model using lp distances. The dual program is original and is a contribution to the theory of facilities location as well as providing a new efficient method of computing optimal facilities location in certain cases where linear constraints are present. Some properties of the dual are developed as the hyperbolic approximation model converges to the actual location model. Computation results using a decomposition programming method are given and discussed.

This paper extends the current state of public facilities location problems on a road network to cover situations in which the number of users at each node may be a random variable. The basic location model is reformulated as a chance-constrained programming problem with fractile criterion. A computational procedure for solving the non-linear deterministic equivaent problem derived is presented. Finally, a hypothetical numerical example i1lustrates the pos-sibility of changes in the location decision when the stochastic nature of the problem is taken into account.

The ideas and concepts articulated extend the theory underlying the role of public investment, including investment in water resource development, in the process of regional economic growth. Hypotheses concerning interdependences among public investment impacts are investigated in the context of an industrial location model of regional growth. The analysis suggests that construction impacts as well as developmental impacts should be considered in the investment decision-making process. Implications for the growth center strategy for regional development are also discussed.

The objective of this study is to define in the cost minimizing sense the optimum size and location for beef slaughter plants in the Eastern Central Queensland region. The plant location model used for this purpose is a modified transhipment formulation. It is applied to both a long run unlimited capacity case and a short run limited capacity case. The analysis indicates that for both cases production‐area oriented slaughter minimizes costs. O PERATIONAL constraints of the Stollsteimer long-run spatial model have been severe. The data input requirements are large. More serious, for all but small problems the optimization tends to be computationally demanding to the point of infeasibility. The purpose of this paper is to enlarge the scope of problem for which the basic computational model can be used. Specifically, an algorithm is suggested that operationalizes the Stollsteimer model for plant location problems where a large number of plants may enter the optimum solution.

The paper describes research work carried out in Czechoslovakia concerning the location and size of mills, with particular reference to the lumber industry. Two models are presented, the first being a relatively simple linear model (a generalization of an algorithm for solving the standard transportation problem), and the second a more realistic mixed integer location model.

Present location theory ranges from lists of subjective factors to be used as guidelines on the one hand to mathematical models utilizing only monetary factors on the other. A void has existed with respect to using all relevant location information in a comprehensive location model. Such a model is presented in this paper. All factors, both subjective and those quantifiable, are evaluated, converted to consistent, dimensionless indices, and then combined to yield the location measure of a given site. These location measures may be used to select a single location or may serve as input to a second model which solves a multiplant location problem. The entire process has been programmed in FORTRAN IV and is currently in use.

A city center is given with automobile travel demand expresed by spatially related trip ends during a given period of time. Included is a set of possible locations for off-street parking development. The major proposition is that parking potential at a point can be derived by considering the parking process as a distribution process. A parking distribution model is constructed to describe a parking system. This model can be extended to locate parking facilities among a number of possible sites. A site is chosen if the parking potential is commensurate with the cost of land to make a parking development feasible.

Automation of the radar target detection process for remotely located scanning radars in an air traffic control system results in a queueing requirement for target reports when the communication link transfer rate is less than that of the radar. To determine the nature of this queueing requirement, a systems model was developed which incorporates the effects of aircraft target spacing at random intervals, in flight corridors, and in close formation clusters. The entire system was simulated to determine the queueing statistics as a function of the target spacing parameters, the load, the total number of targets, and the mixture of different message lengths. Verification of the simulation for one case which used a simplified target location model with all targets randomly located was obtained by mathematical analysis. A comparison of the two types of target location models showed that the complex target location model created a queue whose mean and variance were significantly larger than that created by the simplified model with all targets randomly located.

This paper presents some experiments in calibrating a retail location model designed for the Kristiansand region in southern Norway. The form and behaviour of the model under extremes of its parameter values is first investigated, and then some calibration methods proposed by Hyman are tested. The need for a more general method is evident and a search procedure based on the Fibonacci numbers is outlined. A generalisation of this method, based on the golden section number, is derived and this method is used to explore the sensitivity of the model's goodness-of-fit to changes in parameter values. A fundamental result of these explorations shows that there is no unique fit for retail models with two parameters, and this result is likely to hold for other models of spatial interaction.

The conventional cotton marketing system includes characteristics that impair its efficiency. This paper reports on a study which examined the potential operational efficiency gains in that portion of the system which involved the flow of seed cotton from the field through the ginning process. Up to 70 percent of the annual production is harvested in three to four weeks; the rest is harvested and processed during the remaining 3 1/2 to 4 months of the ginning season.

Theories of economic integration are based in part on concepts from location theory. As static models are generally inadequate for the dynamic context of integration, the author formulates a dynamic version of Losch's static location model and examines its implications for economic integration through a dynamic programming approach. Although the potential advantages from integration of expansion and location policies are substantial, marginal returns diminish rapidly as the size of the integrated group is enlarged. (Author)
