A survey made of the activities and attitudes of nurses who have completed the Cincinnati Pediatric Nurse Associate Program showed, among other findings: most of the nurses are employed in public health settings; 80 per cent feel that there is excellent or good acceptance of their expanded role by physicians with whom they work; 75 per cent feel that there is excellent or good acceptance of their expanded role by nurse colleagues; 100 per cent feel that there is excellent or good acceptance of their expanded role by patients and families; 69 per cent feel that disease prevention, parent education, and screening assessment are the types of services most characteristic of theft expanded role; 83 per cent feel that their activities and accountability involve physicians; the role that PNA's like best by an overwhelming majority is the opportunity to provide counseling and anticipatory guidance; 60 per cent of the PNA's left that parent education regarding mental and physical health and child rearing was the greatest unmet need of children in our present health care delivery system. This report is the result of a demonstration project illustrating how to develop diagnostic services to young retarded children. The techniques and methods utilized in this project are described. The practicality of a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of mental retardation using the local district public health nurse as the case coordinator is demonstrated. The project suggests that this model of cooperation between a specialized pediatric center and a local health department could be utilized to serve other groups of handicapped children. Furthermore, it appeared that the participation of local professionals in the decision-making process concerning a course of action for the retarded child committed them to greater effort to implement and facilitate such care. Yugoslavia has received many visitors from the U.S. who have come to investigate pertinent health problems and to establish friendly contacts which would lead to a continuing exchange of ideas. For example, maternal and child health has been explored extensively by U.S. health specialists and students for the purpose of gathering and sharing useful information. An essential component of maternal and child health is family planning, which, in Yugoslavia, has been integrated into the maternal and child health program. A key figure on their health team in the delivery of family planning services is the public health nurse.
