Sagittal balance of the mandible in volves, simultaneously, the anteropos terior and vertical relations of the man dible in the sagittal plane. Such balance exists when the teeth, the neuromuscular mechanism and the temporomandibular articulation are functioning in harmony. Either structural or functional dishar mony of these structures may give rise to sagittal imbalance, and serious harmful results may ensue. The dentist has a grave responsibility to the patient to es tablish and maintain the balance of the mandible.
