Theories, debates, and activism on sexual health and rights have travelled withreasonable speed in North Africa in the past three decades or so and considerable headway has been achieved on this front (see Charrad, 2010; Sadiqi, 2008; Ennaji & Sadiqi, 2011). However, although related, questions of domestic violence, which may also include sexual assault and rape, have been rather side-lined theoretically, in spite of the fact that activism and legal reform remain strong in the region, and in spite of the fact that gender-based violence is considered essential to the most fundamental provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). This regression in theoretical work on domestic violence in the region resulted in lack of action on the part of policy-makers.

Shortly after an attempted rape and life threat a four-year-old girl developed a loss of speech followed by a clinical picture of Heller's dementia. She had mainly nocturnal fits of terror, but no evidence of an epileptic nature was established until four years after the onset of these fits when she developed a status epilepticus authenticated by a deeply disturbed electroencephalogram. The literature on Heller's dementia, the meaning of the various symptoms, and the possible impact of the psychological trauma were discussed.

Those indictable crimes against the person which are classified under the heading of violence cover a wide range of offences and are extremely varied, especially as regards motivation, the circumstances in which the offences occur and the degree of violence used. At one extreme are offences of murder, including brutal sexual assaults on children resulting in death; in the middle is a vast range of offences of wounding which vary from grave injuries and fractures to minor bruises and abrasions; while at the other end of the scale are crimes in which offenders, although found in possession of some offensive weapon, had neither displayed it nor even threatened personal violence.

How can the rights of sexual assault victims be balanced against the rights of the accused in a sexual assault case? Sexual assault remains one of the most under-reported crimes in Canada, largely due to the invasion that results once a sexual assault is reported. Distrust of the criminal justice system continues to deter reporting. Recent amendments to the Canadian Criminal Code aim to protect sexual assault complainants by regulating the introduction of sexual history evidence and third-party records, such as counselling and therapy. However, courts in Canada have increasingly used a standard based on privacy law lo interpret these provisions. Does privacy law serve as a useful framework by which to evaluate this legislation? This article explores the gendered issues of privacy law, challenges the privacy approach to the sexual assault provisions of the Criminal Code, and explores a more balanced alternative.

In a 2008 project about children suffering from tuberculosis in the 1950s, the Norwegian Museum of Science, Technology, Industry and Medicine was struggling with the question of how to display personal stories of coercion and abuse. This article investigates how such memories from childhood were made into “artefacts” that could be exhibited in the museum and published in a catalogue. How were these objects constructed at the museum, in the media and by the museum visitors, and how were they understood? Were the main points of interest what happened then – the historical facts or phenomena – or what happened now, in the form of the storytellers telling their story today? The article focuses on discussions and negotiations between the curators and other employees at the museum, “the sanatorium children” and the media during the production process and after. How did the museum act and change while working with such controversial issues?
