This paper investigates the impact of the environmental conditions during the first half of the 2020 mei-yu season (Y20) and the southwest vortex (SWV), as well as their interaction, on heavy precipitation in southern Taiwan during late May 2020, based on a quantitative approach through ensemble simulations. The control experiment successfully replicates observed heavy precipitation in southern and central Taiwan and reveals a positive spatial correlation between precipitation occurrence probabilities and mean accumulated precipitation, emphasizing continuous rainfall accumulation over intermittent extreme events. Comparative analyses with sensitivity experiments elucidate that the Y20, featuring an extended western North Pacific subtropical high, intensify pressure gradients and southwesterly flow near Taiwan, favoring precipitation in windward regions but hindering it in the east. The SWV creates a moist and vortical environment near Taiwan, amplifying moisture supply and westerly winds, promoting precipitation in southern Taiwan, and enhancing frontal activity. The interaction between the SWV and the Y20, though limited in its impact on providing favorable wind and moisture conditions for precipitation southwest of Taiwan, significantly contributes to precipitation in southern Taiwan. The reason is that although the SWV primarily enhances moisture and the Y20 predominantly boost southwesterly flow, creating favorable conditions for rainfall, substantial precipitation occurs only when both factors converge in a nonlinear interaction. The interaction increases frontal activity over the Taiwan Strait and influences the movement and strength of the SWV, enhancing southwesterly flow and moisture flux in southwestern Taiwan. This paper investigates a wind speed oscillation event that occurred near the coastline of central Taiwan in the afternoon of 17 February 2018, using data from observations and numerical simulations. The observed wind speeds at 100-m altitude displayed a fast-oscillating pattern of about 6 cycles between strong winds of approximately 21 m s−1 and weak winds of around 2 m s−1, with periods of about 10 min. The pressure anomalies fluctuated in antiphase with the wind speed anomalies. The synoptic analysis revealed the influence of a continental high pressure system, resulting in a cold-air outbreak over Taiwan. The cold north-northeasterly winds split into two branches upon encountering Taiwan's topography, with ridging off the east coast and a lee trough off the west coast of Taiwan. Wind oscillations were detected in the low-level cold air offshore the west coast of Taiwan, depicted by wavelike structures in wind speeds, sea level pressure, and potential temperature. The perturbations were identified as Kelvin-Helmholtz billows characterized by regions of strong wind speeds, warm and dry air, sinking motions, and low pressure collocated with each other, while regions of weaker wind speeds, cooler and moister air, ascending motions, and high pressure were associated with each other. With terrain contributing to favorable conditions, the large vertical and horizontal wind shears resulted from the southward acceleration of low-level cold air and the northward movement of the lee trough played an important role in initiating the wind oscillations. Intensification of Typhoon Chanthu (2021) along the eastern coast of Taiwan was accompanied by pronounced asymmetry in eyewall convection dominated by wavenumber-1 features, as observed by a dense radar network in Taiwan. The maximum wind speed at 3-km altitude, retrieved from radar observations, exhibited a rapid increase of approximately 18 m s−1 within an 11-h period during the intensification stage, followed by a significant decrease of approximately 19 m s−1 within 8 h during the weakening stage. Namely, Chanthu underwent both rapid intensification (RI) and rapid weakening (RW) within the 24-h analyzed period, posing challenges for intensity forecasts. During the intensifying stages, the region of maximum eyewall convection asymmetry underwent a sudden cyclonic rotation from the eastern to the northern semicircle immediately after the initiation of terrain-induced boundary inflow from the south of the typhoon, as observed by surface station data. This abrupt rotation of eyewall asymmetry exhibited better agreement with radar-derived vertical wind shear (VWS) than that derived from global reanalysis data. This finding suggests that the meso-β-scale VWS is more representative for tropical cyclones than meso-α-scale VWS when the terrain-induced forcing predominates in the environmental conditions. Further examination of the radar-derived VWS indicated that the VWS profile pattern provided a more favorable environment for typhoon intensification. In summary, Chanthu's RI was influenced by the three factors: 1) terrain-induced boundary inflow from the south of the typhoon, observed by surface station data; 2) low-level flow pointing toward the upshear-left direction; and 3) weak upper-level VWS. Significance Statement: Tropical cyclone intensity change has been an important issue for both real-time operation and research, but the influence of terrain on intensity change has not been fully understood. Typhoon Chanthu (2021) underwent a significant intensity change near the complex terrain of Taiwan that was observed by a dense radar network. This study analyzes 24 h of radar and weather station data to investigate Chanthu's evolution. The analyses indicate that the complex terrain affected the low-level flow near the TC. The scale-to-scale kinetic energy (KE) cascade induced by the nonlinear interaction among topography, the Kuroshio, and mesoscale eddies is systematically investigated in the coarse-graining framework based on simulated data from the well-validated Regional Ocean Model System. The KE transfer exhibits inhomogeneous spatial and temporal distributions and varies with length scale. During current–topography interaction, the KE transfers downscale across larger scales and reversely across smaller scales with an inherent separation scale of 150 km northeast of Taiwan, resulting in a significant positive net KE flux for mesoscale motions. The transfer around Suao Ridge is consistently downscaled with significant seasonal variation that is stronger in summer and weaker in winter. South of Suao Ridge, the transfer is one order of magnitude weaker and changes greatly with time. The cyclonic (anticyclonic) eddy weakens (enhances) KE transfer in most study areas. In particular, the cyclonic eddy reverses the transfer direction around Suao Ridge. The anticyclonic eddy triggers a significant bidirectional transfer south of Suao Ridge. Analyses show that the special arc-shaped topographic feature and northwestward Kuroshio intrusion current are responsible for the nature of bidirectional KE transfer northeast of Taiwan. The direction of mean current relative to the topography gradient determines the Rossby number magnitude and the KE transfer direction. The large-scale circulation determines the transfer intensity by changing the horizontal shear and barotropic instabilities. The KE transfer caused by nonlinear dynamics contributes significantly to the total anticyclonic eddy-induced net KE flux changes. In particular, the inverse KE cascade plays a key role in net KE flux changes in mesoscale motions east of Taiwan. Significance Statement: In this work, we clarify the scale-to-scale kinetic energy transfer east of Taiwan. Energy transfer varies in different subareas. It is bidirectional northeast of Taiwan, consistently downscale around Suao Ridge, and weak and variable south of Suao Ridge. These transfer characteristics are closely related to the direction of mean flow relative to the topography gradient. Mesoscale eddies can trigger bidirectional transfer and even reverse the transfer direction. The reverse cascade is as important as the forward cascade for the total mesoscale energy change. This study not only shows an example of KE cascade when strong currents pass through continental slope, sea ridge, and open ocean, but also is of great significance for studying the dynamical and ecological environment variation of marginal sea. Global precipitation demonstrates a substantial role in the hydrological cycle and offers tremendous implications in hydrometeorological studies. Advanced remote sensing instrumentations, such as the NASA Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR), can estimate precipitation and cloud properties and have a unique capability to estimate the raindrop size information globally at snapshots in time. The present study validates the Level-2 data products of the GPM DPR with the long-term measurements of seven north Taiwan Joss–Waldvogel disdrometers from 2014 to 2022. The precipitation and drop size distribution parameters like rainfall rate (R; mm h−1), radar reflectivity factor (dBZ), mass-weighted mean drop diameter (Dm; mm), and normalized intercept parameter (Nw; m−3 mm−1) of the GPM DPR are compared with the disdrometers. Four different comparison approaches (point match, 5-km average, 10-km average, and optimal method) are used for the validation; among these four, the optimal strategy provided reasonable agreement between the GPM DPR and the disdrometers. The GPM DPR revealed superior performance in estimating the rain parameters in stratiform precipitation than the convective precipitation. Irrespective of algorithm type (dual- or single-frequency algorithm), sensitivity analysis revealed superior agreement for the mass-weighted mean diameter and inferior agreement for the normalized intercept parameter.
