3. The commodification of academic research and its social legitimation: When the public communication of science becomes propaganda.

This paper takes a novel approach to the functional transformation of the public communication of science and technology in the context of the commodification of academia and academic research. It contends that the public representations of university-industry relations and academic entrepreneurship policy should be understood as an instance of the leveraging of the public communication of science and technology for propaganda purposes. To substantiate this approach, this paper elaborates on the concept and functions of propaganda by drawing from traditional and contemporary scholarship. It also examines what the commodification of academic knowledge production consists of, underscoring its contradictions and the negative consequences that it has had for some domains of social life, including academia itself. In view of the foregoing, it is possible to hypothesise the use of the public communication of science and technology for disseminating the ‘ideology of academic entrepreneurship’ for propaganda purposes. The final section outlines some general criteria that ought to be considered when operationalising this theoretical framework for analysing the media coverage of university-industry relations and academic entrepreneurship. The approach described here should be understood as a first step towards uncovering and criticising the ‘common sense’ on which the contemporary political economy of academic knowledge production rests. This paper contributes to the understanding of media discourses surrounding the sustainability of nuclear energy, particularly within a crisis context. The study examines the implications of the adoption of the Complementary Delegated Act on EU taxonomy by the European Commission on July 6, 2022, which officially categorises nuclear energy as sustainable. Employing a critical discourse analysis (CDA) methodology, the research explores the discourse strategies --nomination, predication, and argumentation-- utilised across 695 news articles. The findings reveal the intricate representation of nuclear energy's sustainability across the media. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict amplifies favourably the nuclear energy view as a reliable and sustainable energy source. However, the media discourse on nuclear energy's sustainability reveals a variety of viewpoints. These varying outlooks provide essential insights for shaping effective energy policies. This research contributes valuable insights into understanding how media shapes and influences public perception of sustainability energy policies, amplifying specific actors' voices and steering discourse toward distinct trajectories. 5. Audience Generated Content Management - Live Streamers’ Strategies to Overcome Unwanted Donations.

While studies of live video streaming focus primarily on donations from an economic perspective and streamers’ endorsement of donations, our study draws attention to the phenomenon of unwanted content, particularly in the context of donations. The paper examines the behavior of gaming live streamers on two leading streaming platforms: YouTube and Twitch. Our study covered hundreds of hours of public live streams conducted by streamers from four countries. Recognizing the unequal roles of streamers and their audiences, we introduce the term ‘audience generated content’ (AGC) as a subset of user generated content (UGC). In the article, we present features and conditions that may cause streamers to be reluctant about the donations they receive. We also provide typology and characteristics of strategies to overcome unwanted donations. Since aversion to certain donations is often related to their hateful nature, our article also highlights the major flaws in algorithmic monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. Adoption and use factors of artificial intelligence and big data by citizens.

The impact of artificial intelligence on people’s lives is demonstrated today. Previous literature has shown that the use of a specific technology is directly linked to the individuals’ intention to use it. The aim of this paper is to study the factors that determine the adoption and use of artificial intelligence and big data in Spain, using a research model based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), proposed by Venkatesh et al. (2003). This work addresses the specific gap in the validation of the original theoretical model of UTAUT in two dimensions, with respect to the adoption of artificial intelligence by citizens and with respect to the factors that influence this adoption, evaluating the previous ones and proposing some new ones considering the current context. The methodology used is based on a national survey, and it analyzes the research model using the statistical technique of Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), which details the mediating and moderating relationships between constructs. The results show that Intention to Use has a direct positive influence on the Use of artificial Intelligence and big data, confirming previous literature. Performance Expectancy is the strongest predictor of Intention to Use, and indirectly of the adoption of artificial intelligence and big data applications. Effort Expectancy, in its application to the adoption of AI and big data by citizens, is an indirect determinant mediated by the Intention to Use, but its total effect (direct + indirect) is not significant. 15. Covering artificial intelligence: the role of European Union, British, and American media outlets in generative AI Visibility.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the central topics of 2023 with extensive media coverage of the most relevant technologies and issues associated with this subject. In a highly competitive digital media landscape, search engine optimization (SEO) has become cybermedia’s primary strategy to increase visibility and attract more readers. The objective of this paper is to analyze the visibility of content published by the media relating to artificial intelligence, focusing on a selection of related keywords. The research also aims to investigate how this visibility has impacted both the technologies themselves and the analyzed media outlets. A total of 69 media outlets from 12 European Union countries, the United States, and the United Kingdom were examined. The results reveal a pronounced dominance of U.S. media, closely followed by Spanish media. There is an uneven distribution of media outlets across most of the countries analyzed, with two or three most of the of visibility. The search queries that contribute the most visibility to the analyzed media align with an informational intent, are of the long-tail type, and are associated with OpenAI technologies, particularly ChatGPT. Moreover, these queries are primarily found in news sections dedicated to science and technology. 16. Promoting Hospitals’ Reputation through Smart Branding Initiatives. A Quantitative Analysis of the Best Hospitals in the United States.

Hospitals use different technological tools to implement corporate communication initiatives and, in this way, improve their relationships with stakeholders (employees, patients, media companies) and build a reputed brand. However, they face different barriers: limited budgets for corporate communication, strict legal frameworks, and stakeholders’ new needs regarding information and emotional support. This paper aims to analyze how the 100 best hospitals in the United States manage smart technologies to promote their brand. To do that, we conducted a literature review about smart hospitals, branding, and corporate communication; and then we defined 34 quantitative indicators to evaluate how the hospitals previously mentioned managed their websites, online newsrooms, about us sections, and artificial intelligence department web sites for reputation purposes. Our results proved that most hospitals respected indicators related to the homepage (8.67/11) but not those referring to online newsrooms (4.44/11) or about us sections (2.66/6). Besides, only 23 hospitals had implemented a department specialized in artificial intelligence that collaborated with external organizations. We concluded that most American hospitals focused their reputation efforts on patients rather than other targets (media companies, employees, suppliers, shareholders); and that these organizations did not integrate enough artificial intelligence projects into their smart branding initiatives. The consolidation of digital television via subscription video on demand (SVOD) services has created an unprecedented increase in the consumption of serialised TV shows, which has had direct consequences on the content production sector. Faced with an increasingly demanding, hyperconnected and discerning audience and a supply of content never previously seen, television production and distribution strategies are involved in a process of change and adaptation. This paper seeks to analyse the production of Spanish television series created to be distributed on SVOD platforms. The aim is to know the role that production companies play in the creation of television series for SVOD so as to identify strategies and cooperative alliances between production companies and platforms and to detect possible patterns and trends in the operations of the audiovisual market. Using a mixed methodology that combines quantitative study with qualitative data analysis, the 88 Spanish TV series and miniseries that premiered on SVOD platforms from 2016 to 2021 are analysed, taking as a starting point the year in which these platforms began operating in Spain. The results confirm a trend towards cooperation between independent production companies and the platforms themselves, while no presence of in-house production is observed. Likewise, the atomisation of the role of production companies in the context of SVOD is shown, a phenomenon that already existed in generalist television production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Speculative fiction is based on one main question: what if? This paper addresses the question of how audiences interpret such interrogative. In particular, our main interest lies in knowing how the different political ideologemes that may inhabit speculative fiction are signified. Thus, in this study we have focused on the genre of dystopia. To this end, a total of five focus groups were carried out. Specifically, the ideologemes tested in the reception study belong to socialism, conservatism, neoliberalism, liberalism and religious fundamentalism. The advent and spread of social networking sites have been the object of study of most of the research performed on political communication over the past 25 years. However, more recent inquiries have indicated that the political establishment still has not fully exploited the interactive potential of these media. Against this backdrop, this paper presents the results of a systematic study of the communication between the main political parties in Andalusia (the most populous region in Spain) and the citizenry on Twitter, with the aim of confirming whether or not it is really interactive and participatory. To this end, the spotlight is placed here on those parties most active online and on the way in which they foster interactivity, the subjects that they broach and the functions of their messages. The data were obtained from a content analysis of the tweets (n = 10,729) posted on the official profiles of the main Andalusian parties in 2020. The results indicate that there was no interactive communication with the citizenry, despite the fact that they were in much need of reassurance owing to the unprecedented situation to which the COVID-19 pandemic had given rise. The Andalusian political parties still use social networking sites for the one-way dissemination of information, which shows that they are not, in practice, horizontal and participatory spaces of communication, as the cyber-optimists, defending the innovation hypothesis, predicted. The research aims to assess the possibilities and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) for the development of the teaching and learning of journalistic writing techniques in the university educational context. The main objective consists of analysing the abilities of AI to solve the composition of different journalistic texts, both informative and opinion, and the quality of the result, as well as other applications of AI in journalistic writing. The text tries to contribute to the knowledge on the use of AI by teachers and students in the teaching and learning process. A mixed methodology has been used to develop the research: on the one hand, descriptive and comparative, based on surveys to university professors in Spain specialised in this subject and to students taking related contents in their studies, also in this context; on the other hand, an experimental research is included among professors trained in the field of Journalistic Writing, who are asked for the qualified correction of an exam, anonymous, actually carried out with the AI system, ChatGPT. After weighing the results, each of them is interviewed in depth about the quality of the texts, their strengths, and weaknesses. The results show that AI is beginning to be used in the university context by students and professors. In the specific field of journalistic writing, its use for the moment is limited to assisting tasks in the writing process or suggesting topics, while the automatic generation of content is not widely accepted due to the ethical implications that it entails, especially those related to the originality of content. Teachers value the potential of this technology for writing simple and informative pieces but observe limitations at deeper levels of knowledge and in hybrid texts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The controversy surrounding ChatGPT has reopened the debate about the impact of new technologies in many fields of activities, including communication and PR. This study mapped Romanian PR practitioners' use of generative AI and their perception of it, placing a special focus on the ethical concerns involved and the implications for the profession itself. We took a quantitative-qualitative approach by using both a survey and semi-structured interviews. Our goal was to determine the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the Romanian PR industry and to understand the reasons and challenges behind integrating generative AI in PR practice. The survey findings revealed a substantial adoption (73.5%) of AI within the Romanian PR community, with an overwhelming 91.6% of them using ChatGPT. The satisfaction level was remarkably high, with 92% expressing satisfaction with generative AI application efficacy. Benefits included timesaving, work simplification, and the reduction of repetitive tasks. Surprisingly, not only did 67.3% of respondents not perceive AI as an immediate threat to PR jobs, but 80.5% believed AI represents an opportunity for the industry. Indeed, almost all our interviewees admitted relief and satisfaction when using generative AI tools to complete their tasks. However, some concerns were expressed regarding the quality of the generative AI content and, in particular, the need to always check this kind of content by a human editor before using it. 40. Minority ethnic older adults' perception and behaviour towards COVID-19 public health campaigns in the UK.

In the UK, minority ethnic groups were reported to face the greatest risk from COVID-19. Yet, little is known about their perception and behaviour towards COVID-19 campaigns. This study used 35 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with minority ethnic adults aged 60 or over in England and Wales to explore their motivations for complying with or disregarding official guidance and their evaluations of various campaign content and channels used early in the pandemic. Using Template Analysis, key themes in the interviewees' discourse were identified, which were subsequently analysed using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). This study found that the predominant motivations for non-compliant behaviour included fatigue from information overload, government- and socially-induced distrust, as well as self-reported personality traits. In contrast, compliant individuals emphasised community-based obligations and their trust in official communications. Although participants recognised the pandemic as a challenging time, they were generally unsatisfied with the credibility, consistency, and accessibility of public health messaging. 41. Hoaxes' anatomy: Analysis of disinformation during the coronavirus pandemic in Europe (2020-2022).

The escalating proliferation of disinformation throughout Europe, exacerbated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitates a rigorous examination of its ramifications for public health. This study undertakes an investigation into trends in pandemic-related disinformation in Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland spanning the period from 2020 to 2022. In this way, a meticulous content analysis of 704 publications from fact-checking sites was conducted. To augment the study's robustness and provide a nuanced perspective on the evolving nature of disinformation, case studies were meticulously incorporated. The data reveals that despite of the professionalization of deep fakes, 43% of disinformation propagated through textual means, predominantly leveraging social networks (75%), especially Facebook and WhatsApp. Notably, misinformation pertaining to vaccines constituted the most prevalent narrative among disinformation stories, comprising 25.85% of the total. Moreover, as the pandemic unfolded, the thematic focus of disinformation adapted to the distinct contexts of each country. Furthermore, 47.16% of the content was found to be fabricated, with the primary objective of amplifying a common adversary accounting for 39.77% of cases. Given the contemporary relevance and public significance of this subject, the overarching objective of this research has been to scrutinise the dynamics of disinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe. Contemporary mediation gravitates around platforms, central structures where users and content converge. As the pivotal format for mediation through sound, intersecting culture, economy, technology and social processes, podcasting has drawn the attention of platforms which have been investing heavily on attracting/retaining producers and listeners alike, by facilitating production, securing the rights to exclusive content, and providing unique ways to interact with content. In this article we analyze Spotify's Top Podcast rankings in Portugal, using descriptive analysis to identify and characterize content, to determine how discovery is promoted and how diverse is the content being presented to users, determining their perception of the format. We argue that content diversity is central to a format that has become mainstream within contemporary digital and audio culture, through the convergence of independent and mainstream producers in the unique content sphere of podcasting. Affective polarization has become a worldwide phenomenon that impacts the ability to engage in meaningful dialogue and reflective consideration of different available courses of action. Social media use has been linked to phenomena such as homophily and echo chambers, which contribute to the polarization of attitudes and beliefs. At the same time, social media use has been tied to collective action. This study seeks to analyze the relationship between the political use of social media, affective polarization, and collective action. It proposes two models: the first evaluates the mediating effect of the SIMCA variables in the relationship between the political use of social media and collective action; the second proposes a pathway whereby the political use of social media and its impact on collective action is mediated first by affective polarization and subsequently by the SIMCA model variables. Using a sample of 659 Peruvian social media users ranging from 18 to 39 years old, the authors found that participative efficacy alone mediates the relationship between the political use of social media and collective action. Affective polarization by itself did not mediate this relationship. However, when considering participative efficacy, the findings indicate a pathway from political use of social media to collective action mediated by both affective polarization and participative efficacy. This article reflects on how the production of affective polarization in virtual spaces among like-minded individuals can impact participative efficacy, and subsequently collective action. Various studies have analysed the news media's participation in debates generated in the public digital sphere represented by social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Some of these debates have gained strength and become authentic movements linked to certain social struggles, such as feminism. Similarly, the so-called 'environmental hashtivism' or 'eco-hashtivism' is acquiring increasing importance in the context of this digital sphere. In view of this, the focus of this article is the distinctive area of public radio and television channels in Europe to examine the transmedia action #EKIN_klima, developed by the Basque public audiovisual corporation Euskal Irrati Telebista (EITB). The study of this pioneering initiative allows us to understand just how the eco-activism actions of the public news media can help to reposition it within the hybrid media system and contribute to the modernisation of its social function, along the lines of other actions, such as those carried out by the BBC against disinformation. In this way, it has been noted that the environmental issue is not only something to be included in the news media agenda, but also an opportunity for the public news media to legitimise its social and innovative character through transmedia branding actions. 45. The role of engagement and self-disclosure in mitigating loneliness: a study on women's closed Facebook groups.

Inspired by the uses and gratifications theory, this study examines the role of closed women's Facebook groups in mediating the relationship between various forms of loneliness and perceived gratification among Israeli women. We surveyed 521 female participants to explore the mediating effect of engagement on loneliness and perceived gratification. Our findings suggest that these closed Facebook groups serve as significant platforms for interaction and personal disclosure, thereby contributing to the perceived importance of these groups in members' lives. However, the results also show that these groups may not effectively alleviate socialemotional loneliness, and increased engagement within these groups does not significantly influence the relationship between loneliness and perceived gratification. In contrast, these groups act as alternative support systems for women experiencing family loneliness, with a heightened sense of gratification correlating with active participation. Despite these findings, the study reveals the limitations of these groups in addressing all forms of loneliness, underscoring the vital role of offline interactions. Therefore, these results highlight the need to further explore the interplay between online and offline spaces in shaping women's experiences of loneliness and perceived gratification. The study also suggests that additional research is necessary to examine the applicability of these findings across different cultural contexts and a broader range of online groups. 46. Generative AI changes the book publishing industry: reengineering of business processes.

The research defines main direction of book publishing houses reengineering based on the analysis of successful cases of AI use in publishing business. The timeline of the research started in August 2023 and was summarised in the beginning of January 2024. The main methods were expert interview, monitoring of international and Ukrainian internet platforms, and document analysis. The study showed that the main aspects of business processes reengineering in publishing houses, based on the use of AI, are: (1) development of business strategies and plans; (2) development of digital spaces in publishing houses; (3) emerging of new professions; (4) discussions and their summaries; (5) received manuscripts check; (6) finding plagiarism; (7) preparation of creative, advertising, and presentation materials; (8) working with numbers and databases. The recommendations on the use of AI in business processes are extracted from the policies of the organisations connected with the book publishing industry. They are presented in the convenient table for further use. One of the study results showed that Ukrainian publishing houses discuss the capabilities of AI for generating different types and formats of content, and based on that, AI capabilities for reengineering are considered. One of the biggest challenges, created by AI, is that the technology develops faster than people can perceive so they struggle to describe the technology itself and its impact. It means that we should adjust to the changes, caused by exponential development of AI, finding resources to overcome unequal access to AI capabilities in the process of specialists’ preparation. In six years, the word deepfake has gone from a niche on Reddit to the main object of research for hundreds of researchers and to the front line of concern of many policymakers. However, this transition did not lead to a faithful definition because it is still an in-flux technology. There is one sector, however, that is incompatible with vague and equivocal concepts: legislative production. This article introduces the novel concept of fictional populism, describing the phenomenon of made-up characters created and performed by real individuals. These imaginary political candidates typically employ fiction, humour (in the forms of parody and satire), and self-scandalization to accentuate their (populist) messages. Building on the concept of celebrity populism that explores the mixture of populism with celebrity culture, this study examines the features of fictional populism. It focuses on two case studies from Croatia and one from Serbia. Qualitative content analysis of case studies’ communication on Facebook during election campaigns is conducted with the aim to understand how they blended elements of celebrity and popular culture to emphasize their populist messages. Moreover, the study explores how these fictional candidates addressed real political issues during campaigns. By employing an iterative approach between theory and analysis, the article offers rich portrayals of each candidate’s performances, illuminating their strategic use of fiction, humour, and self-scandalization to emphasize the populist messages and appeal to the people.
