The Notre-Dame de Paris fire offers anthropologists in the field of critical heritage studies a rich opportunity for fieldwork and conceptual innovation. This paper examines the social repercussions of a monument's destruction, ranging from emotional responses and public involvement to local and global consequences. The paper also includes the project lines of a broader comparative survey on reactions to the destruction of cultural heritage. A team of social scientists created a comparative grid in order to describe and analyze a series of case studies: Notre-Dame de Paris (France, fire in 2019), the National Museum (Brazil, fire in 2018), Notre-Dame de la Merci (France, fire in 2017), and Coventry Cathedral (UK, bombed in 1940 during WWII). The comparative grid is as follows: - Practices and Reactions: Emotion and Mobilization Regimes Heritage disasters provoke a wide range of privately and collectively expressed reactions that frame these events as a social construction. How do citizens and institutions navigate the outpouring of emotion elicited by the destruction of a monument? - Consequences: The Nature of Heritage Items and Their Social Impact Laypersons and authorities assign different meanings to heritage items according to their cultural and political significance and material and intangible features. How does such representations of a ravaged monument influence its reconstruction process and future relevance? - The Social Fabrication of Memory and Narrative The destruction of a heritage object rapidly triggers a series of narratives, including legal documents and authorities' statements, that constitute a textual memory of the disaster. What standards define catastrophe narratives, and what do their retellings of the event reveal or obscure? - Heritage in Crisis: Catastrophe as Social Construction of Heritage Fragility Heritage is by nature fragile and requires continuous preservation. How does the destruction of monuments galvanize collective representations of the endangerment of heritage? - Temporality and Spatiality: Catastrophe as an Event in Time and Space Although the destruction event is often short-lived and localized, it reveals enduring values and concepts of past and future, as well as geographic place. How are temporality and spatiality reimagined after the loss of a heritage object? - The Right to Heritage: Reconstruction, Citizenship, and Cultural Policies Although often conceptualized as isolated events, the destruction of heritage objects is deeply embedded in their economic, cultural, and social context. What do the destruction and reconstruction of heritage reveal about power dynamics and economic inequalities? - The Limits of Reflexivity: Researchers as Actors Facing the Politics of Mourning As researchers, balancing personal commitment with heritage and ethical scientific inquiry is crucial to sound analysis and to the validity of research results. How should scholars simultaneously manage the experience of and the study of emotional responses such as rage or grief? This paper illustrates these points using vignettes from selected case studies. The project is part of the working group EMOBI, a broader ethnographic project on collective emotions and mobilization following the Paris cathedral fire (social sciences working group of Chantier Scientifique Notre-Dame , supported by the CNRS and the Ministry of Culture). This paper draws on biosemiotics to reflect on the role that scientific inquiry plays in generating (useful) inputs to the process of decision making. In particular, the social theory of Luhmann is used to postulate that the formation of society's identity requires the effective integration of two interrelated processes: (1) self-organization, a biophysical process that requires guided interactions based on effective rules (physical or tangible perspective), and (2) self-referential autopoiesis, a socio-psychological process that demands a communication process capable of preserving shared values (notional or abstract perspective). Rules are based on explanation narratives that are useful for improving interactions. Values are based on the emergence of societal myths and socio-technical imaginaries that fuel the concerns requiring collective action. It is argued that in the process of decision-making, rules (stored in a common memory) and values (generated by the psychic structure) affect each other in an impredicative way. The reproduction and updating of a given identity of society therefore would require a systemic quality check on the whole process of production and use of scientific information for decision-making, and hence a negotiation based on a mix of technical, moral, political, and ethical issues. • A biosemiotics narrative is used to provide new insights in post-normal science. • It draws on the social theory of Luhmann about the formation of society's identity. • It contrasts self-organization (norms) versus self-referential autopoiesis (values). • The role of the psychic structure in quality control of information is emphasized. • The paper identifies novel quality checks for science of governance. • Phasing out coal-fired power is inevitable, but a deeply complex process from a social-institutional standpoint. • The nature of the coal-fired power transition is comparable to the automotive industry closures observed in Australia's recent industrial past. • This paper draws on just transitions and the transition management analytical frameworks. • Four key insights offer pointers for policymakers to support the transition away from coal-fired power in Australia and globally. Nearly three-quarters of Australia's electricity generation is coal-dependent with fossil fuel-led electricity contributing to over a third of Australia's CO 2 emissions. Climate change imperatives are calling for permanent shifts to these patterns, leading to early closure announcements of several coal-fired power plants across the country. Although the pace and scale of the energy transition are unprecedented, the closure of large-scale industries is not uncommon. The most recent closure in Australia's industrial past that remains vivid in the nation's collective memory was the end of nearly 70 years of automotive manufacturing. Drawing on expert consultations, and applying just transitions and transition management thinking, this paper identifies four key insights from the auto sector closure experience. These offer compelling pointers to guide socio-economic transformations in frontline regions that are likely to face challenging, often deeply personal, impacts resulting from the closure of coal-fired power stations over the coming decades. This paper proposes a temporal second-order fully discrete two-grid finite element method (FEM) for solving nonlinear time-fractional variable coefficient diffusion-wave equations. The method involves introducing an auxiliary variable and utilizing a reducing order technique for the fractional derivative. This reduces the original fractional wave equations to a coupled system consisting of two equations with lower order derivative in time. The time-fractional derivative is discretized using the L2- 1 σ formula, while a second-order scheme is used for discretizing the first-order time derivative. The spatial direction is discretized using an efficient two-grid Galerkin FEM. The paper demonstrates that the optimal error estimates in L 2 -norm and H 1 -norm of the two-grid methods can achieve optimal convergence order when the mesh size satisfies H = h 1 2 and H = h r 2 r + 2 , respectively. To handle the initial singularity of the solution and the historical memory of the fractional derivative term, the paper presents the nonuniform and fast two-grid algorithms. Museums form a core institutional foundation to the formation of national identities. They reflect, obfuscate, perform, and shape national narrative and discourse, particularly when operated at the national scale. In Wales, the national museum system is public and composed of seven museums. These national museums negotiate scale in complex, but perhaps not necessarily unique, ways as they root themselves into local communities and regions, operationalize themselves alongside other regional, national, and state heritage institutions, and increasingly inform, support, and draw upon inter- and transnational heritage. How do collective memories or national narratives translate or articulate across scales and landscapes into and from a central bureaucracy, particularly one which came under limited control of democratically-elected Welsh governing bodies in 1997? While geographers have historically included museums within our broader purview, particularly in historical and cultural contexts, few studies have asked how a transcalar, multi-thematic, and dispersed public museum system could be approached via a bureaucratic political geography. This paper aims to address the place for geography at the intersection of nation, state, memory, and museum within the context of National Museum Wales and argues for greater consideration of institutional and bureaucratic memory work within nation-building. The gendered patterning of urban street names as part of the spatial production of broader male-centric memorial landscapes has been documented in a growing body of scholarship. Scholars from various cognate fields, such as cultural geography, gender and memory studies, and urban sociology, have unraveled the stark gender disparities favoring men inscribed into symbolic landscapes through place names, public monuments, and other memorial artefacts. This article sets out to overcome some of the limitations characterizing this strand of research – namely, the lack of statistical sophistication and the preference for case studies based on singular cities – by developing a multi-level modelling of gendered street nomenclature at the national level. The approach developed in this paper employs the complete collection of urban street names in Romania to assess the empirical adequacy of five hypotheses regarding the gendered structuring of the country's urban namescape. This analysis highlights the factors underpinning the variation of gender disparities in terms of Romania's historical regions, ethnic demographics and local ethnopolitics, city ranking within the national territorial administration and intra-urban stratification of the road network, as well as the effects brought about by postsocialist transformations.
