The leakage of gases and chemical vapors is a common accident in laboratory processes that requires a rapid response to avoid harmful effects if humans and instruments are exposed to this leakage. In this paper, the performance of a portable sensor node designed for integration with mobile and stationary robots used to transport chemical samples in automated laboratories was tested and evaluated. The sensor node has four main layers for executing several functions, such as power management, control and data preprocessing, sensing gases and environmental parameters, and communication and data transmission. The responses of three metal oxide semiconductor sensors, BME680, ENS160, and SGP41, integrated into the sensing layer have been recorded for various volumes of selected chemicals and volatile organic compounds, including ammonia, pentane, tetrahydrofuran, butanol, phenol, xylene, benzene, ethanol, methanol, acetone, toluene, and isopropanol. For mobile applications, the sensor node was attached to a sample holder on a mobile robot (ASTI ProBOT L). In addition, the sensor nodes were positioned close to automation systems, including stationary robots. The experimental results revealed that the tested sensors have a different response to the tested volumes and can be used efficiently for hazardous gas leakage detection and monitoring. In this study, a neural network was developed for the detection of acetone, ethanol, chloroform, and air pollutant NO2 gases using an Interdigitated Electrode (IDE) sensor-based e-nose system. A bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS)-based interface circuit was used to measure sensor responses in the e-nose system. The sensor was fed with a sinusoidal voltage at 10 MHz frequency and 0.707 V amplitude. Sensor responses were sampled at 100 Hz frequency and converted to digital data with 16-bit resolution. The highest change in impedance magnitude obtained in the e-nose system against chloroform gas was recorded as 24.86 Ω over a concentration range of 0–11,720 ppm. The highest gas detection sensitivity of the e-nose system was calculated as 0.7825 Ω/ppm against 6.7 ppm NO2 gas. Before training with the neural network, data were filtered from noise using Kalman filtering. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to the improved signal data for dimensionality reduction, separating them from noise and outliers with low variance and non-informative characteristics. The neural network model created is multi-layered and employs the backpropagation algorithm. The Xavier initialization method was used for determining the initial weights of neurons. The neural network successfully classified NO2 (6.7 ppm), acetone (1820 ppm), ethanol (1820 ppm), and chloroform (1465 ppm) gases with a test accuracy of 87.16%. The neural network achieved this test accuracy in a training time of 239.54 milliseconds. As sensor sensitivity increases, the detection capability of the neural network also improves. Potassium-containing feldspars provide a high potential for producing potash, a product with widespread use in agriculture. The present work assesses applying the anti-solvent crystallization method for the purification and recovery of high-purity muriate of potash (KCl) from feldspar leaching solutions. Initially, screening experiments were carried out on a synthetic leaching solution with the aim of analyzing the crystallization behavior of key components. Screening experiments were performed using five anti-solvents, namely methanol, ethanol, acetone, 2-propanol, and ethylene glycol. Acetone and 2-propanol were viable options for crystallization of potassium chloride. Then, the effects of anti-solvent ratio (O/A), time, and anti-solvent addition rate on potassium-chloride crystallization were further investigated using acetone and 2-propanol. A recovery of 83% of potassium was achieved when using acetone at the O/A of 5 with the addition rate of 10 mL/min, at room temperature with a hold time of 180 min. The optimum conditions for 2-propanol were determined to be similar, except for using a 5 mL/min addition rate for 79% recovery. The final muriate of potash products had a purity of over 99.9% using either of the anti-solvent. However, differences in morphology and crystal size of products were observed. Acetone-formed potash crystals were aggregates of cubic crystals with an average size of 3 microns, while 2-propanol-formed potash crystals were 20 microns in size as cubic particles with a hollow core. Despite having almost the same performance in potassium recovery, acetone was found to be a more feasible anti-solvent for potash recovery due to simpler downstream solvent recovery. The fermentation route for producing biobutanol from renewable plant biomass was used extensively during the last century. The key factors affecting performance in the standard batch industrial fermentation process are highlighted. Four species of Clostridium were utilized for the industrial production of solvents, and although they share many features in common, they also exhibit significant differences. The salient features of the existing industrial species and strains are reviewed. These include their suitability for the type of process and fermentation substrate used. TLC (thin-layer chromatography) and HPTLC (high-performance thin-layer chromatography) in normal (NP) and reversed (RP) phase systems were combined with densitometry to analyze caffeine, propyphenazone, and paracetamol. This work aims to check whether comparable limit of detection (LOD) values can be obtained on TLC and HPTLC plates. Analyses were performed on five (NP) or four (RP) different stationary phases (chromatographic plates), testing, in both cases, three mobile phases. It is shown that by using both TLC and HPTLC plates, it is possible to develop chromatographic conditions that enable the detection of compounds analyzed in amounts ranging from a dozen to several dozen µg/spot. In the RP system, lower LOD values for all tested compounds were obtained using TLC than HPTLC. However, performing analyses in the NP, similar (of the same order) LOD values were obtained for caffeine, propyphenazone, and paracetamol when using both TLC and HPTLC plates. For example, during the NP-HPTLC analysis using silica gel 60F254 plates (#1.05548) and mobile phase B (n-hexane—acetone—ammonia, 25:25:0.5, v/v/v), LOD values for caffeine, propyphenazone, and paracetamol were 0.010, 0.046, and 0.030 μg/spot, respectively. During NP-TLC analysis using silica gel 60F254 (#1.05554 plates) and the mobile phase C (chloroform—toluene—ethyl acetate—methanol—80% acetic acid, 18:18:7.5:6:0.3, v/v), the values of LOD were 0.054, 0.029, and 0.016 μg/spot, respectively. During RP-TLC analysis using TLC RP-18F254 plates (#1.05559) and mobile phase F (methanol-water, 40:10, v/v), the LOD values were 0.019, 0.024, and 0.053 μg/spot, respectively. Therefore, for economical reasons, TLC plates should be recommended for analyses of caffeine, propyphenazone, and paracetamol, which are several times cheaper than HPTLC plates. Metal oxide semi-conductors are widely applied in various fields due to their low cost, easy processing, and good compatibility with microelectronic technology. In this study, ternary α-Fe2O3/TiO2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites were prepared via simple hydrothermal and annealing treatments. The composition, morphology, and crystal structure of the samples were studied using XPS, SEM, EDS, XRD, and multiple other testing methods. The gas-sensing measurement results suggest that the response value (34.66) of the F/M-3 sensor is 3.5 times higher than the pure α-Fe2O3 sensor (9.78) around 100 ppm acetone at 220°C, with a rapid response and recovery time (10/7 s). Furthermore, the sensors have an ultra-low detection limit (0.1 ppm acetone), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. The improved sensitivity of the composites is mainly attributed to their excellent metal conductivity, the unique two-dimensional layered structure of Ti3C2Tx, and the heterojunction formed between the nanocomposite materials. Ammonia (NH3) is a harmful atmospheric pollutant and an important indicator of environment, health, and food safety conditions. Wearable devices with flexible gas sensors offer convenient real-time NH3 monitoring capabilities. A flexible ammonia gas sensing system to support the internet of things (IoT) is proposed. The flexible gas sensor in this system utilizes polyaniline (PANI) with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) decoration as a sensitive material, coated on a silver interdigital electrode on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. Gas sensors are combined with other electronic components to form a flexible electronic system. The IoT functionality of the system comes from a microcontroller with Wi-Fi capability. The flexible gas sensor demonstrates commendable sensitivity, selectivity, humidity resistance, and long lifespan. The experimental data procured from the sensor reveal a remarkably low detection threshold of 0.3 ppm, aligning well with the required specifications for monitoring ammonia concentrations in exhaled breath gas, which typically range from 0.425 to 1.8 ppm. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates a negligible reaction to the presence of interfering gases, such as ethanol, acetone, and methanol, thereby ensuring high selectivity for ammonia detection. In addition to these attributes, the sensor maintains consistent stability across a range of environmental conditions, including varying humidity levels, repeated bending cycles, and diverse angles of orientation. A portable, stable, and effective flexible IoT system solution for real-time ammonia sensing is demonstrated by collecting data at the edge end, processing the data in the cloud, and displaying the data at the user end. Dry outer onion leaves resulting from the industrial processing of onions are currently discarded as agricultural waste, although some studies have demonstrated that onion peel has beneficial biological effects. Considering the traditional applications of onion peel, the present study evaluated comparatively the chemical and biological characteristics of four types of onion peel extracts, utilizing methanol, ethanol, acetone, or ethyl acetate as the extracting solvent. The extracts were analyzed for their chemical composition, antioxidant potential, and antimicrobial activity. The chemical analysis by UHPLC-DAD-ESI/MS identified 23 compounds in the extracts, belonging to phenolic acids and flavonoids. Quercetin was the main compound in all extracts, ranging in concentrations from 14.91 mg/g DW in the ethanol extract to 48.53 mg/g DW in the methanol extract. The highest contents of total phenols and flavonoids were found in the acetone extract, and the methanol extract demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity in DPPH and ABTS assays. The antimicrobial potential of the extracts was screened using a microdilution method against a spectrum of gastrointestinal microorganisms. The results revealed that all four extracts have significant antimicrobial potential against the tested microorganisms, of which the ethanol extract demonstrated the highest antimicrobial potency. Composites, and especially carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs), are increasingly used in the automotive, aerospace, and aviation industries, and as a result, CFRP production has increased dramatically, leading to a corresponding increase in waste. Landfills and the incineration of waste are likely to be restricted as a result of legislation, thus highlighting the need for efficient recycling methods for CFRPs. However, the recycling of CFRPs is very challenging, mainly due to the difficulty of removing their thermosetting matrix. This study reports a pre-screening of the solvolysis recycling process for CFRPs based on the mechanical properties of the recovered fibers. To this end, solvolysis tests were conducted on unidirectional CFRP samples under supercritical and subcritical conditions using acetone and water. The solvolysis tests were conducted for various conditions of temperature, pressure, and reaction time, without the use of any catalyst. Also, the loading rate (volume of solvent/volume of reactor) was constant. The efficiency of the recycling processes has been evaluated through a morphological and a mechanical characterization of the recovered fibers. In most cases, the decomposition efficiency of the epoxy resin, measured in terms of mass, ranged between 90 and 100%. Moreover, the scanning electron microscopy images of the recovered fibers showed negligible traces of resin residues and no detectable signs of physical damage or any changes in morphology with regard to diameter. Finally, the single-fiber tension tests revealed that that the recovered fibers retained more than 61% of their initial Young's modulus and 70% of their tensile strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a room-temperature ammonia gas sensor using a ZnO and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite is developed. The sensor fabrication involved the innovative application of reverse offset and electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) techniques to create a ZnO/rGO sensing platform. The structural and chemical characteristics of the resulting material were comprehensively analyzed using XRD, FT-IR, FESEM, EDS, and XPS, and rGO reduction was achieved via UV–ozone treatment. Electrical properties were assessed through I–V curves, demonstrating enhanced conductivity due to UV–ozone treatment and improved charge mobility from the formation of a ZnO–rGO heterojunction. Exposure to ammonia gas resulted in increased sensor responsiveness, with longer UV–ozone treatment durations yielding superior sensitivity. Furthermore, response and recovery times were measured, with the 10 min UV–ozone-treated sensor displaying optimal responsiveness. Performance evaluation revealed linear responsiveness to ammonia concentration with a high R2 value. The sensor also exhibited exceptional selectivity for ammonia compared to acetone and CO gases, making it a promising candidate for ammonia gas detection. Rice hulls have a high-value potential, and the lignocellulose components are underutilized compared to other biomass resources. Pretreatments such as carboxymethylation of the degree of substitutions (DS) are used to prepare lignocellulose nanofibril (LCNF) from desilicated rice hull (DSRH). High-pressure homogenization (HPH) and grinding are used to process nano fibrillation. The composition of LCNF DS of desilicated rice hull was identified using 1H NMR for polysaccharide composition and DS determination, acetone and hot water extraction to evaluate extractives, and Klason lignin for lignin content. LCNF was prepared using various DS from 0.2 until DS 0.4. The results showed that LCNF DS has a more than −30 mV zeta potential, suitable for stable nanoemulsion formulations. The particle size of LCNF DS decreases with an increasing carboxyl content in the hydrogel and an increasing number of passes through grinding and high-pressure homogenization, of which LCNF DS 0.4 had the smallest width and length. Imiquimod (IMQ) has been successfully formulated to date mainly as semi-solid lipophilic formulations for topical application. In this study, we investigated the solubility of IMQ in solvents suitable for developing innovative formulations in the form of powder obtained, for instance, by spray drying; thus, water, ethanol, methanol, acetone, acetonitrile, and dimethyl sulfoxide were tested at different temperatures. Temperature variations, stirring intensity, and the contact time between IMQ and the solvent greatly affected the evaluation of IMQ equilibrium solubility. The attainment of the solid–liquid equilibrium requires 13 days starting from solid IMQ and 2 days from a cooled-down supersaturated IMQ solution. A correlation between IMQ solubility and the solubility parameters of solvents was not found. IMQ solutions in water, ethanol, methanol, acetonitrile, and dimethyl sulfoxide were neither ideal nor regular. The Scatchard–Hildebrand equation does not apply to IMQ solutions because of association phenomena due to intermolecular hydrogen bonds and/or π-stacking, as supported by the hyperchromic effect that was very pronounced in highly polar solvents, such as water, with the increase in temperature. Finally, IMQ solubility values measured in acetone cannot be considered reliable due to the reaction with the solvent, leading to the formation of new molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present work, the morphological, optical, and gas-sensing properties of La0.67Ca0.2Ba0.13Fe0.97M0.03O3 (M = Ti, Cr, and Mn) nano-powders prepared via the auto-combustion route, were investigated. TEM images prove the nanoscale particle size of all the samples. Optical studies confirm the semiconductor behavior of the studied materials. The response of the prepared nano-powders towards the presence of two gas-reducing agents (ethanol and acetone) was investigated. From the resistance ratio under air and gas, it was possible to determine the response to different gases and deduce that La0.67Ca0.2Ba0.13Fe0.97Ti0.03O3 presents the highest responses to ethanol and acetone. The iron(II) complex with cis,cis-1,3,5-tris(benzylamino)cyclohexane (Bn3CY) (1) has been synthesized and characterized, which reacted with dioxygen to form the peroxo complex 2 in acetone at −60 °C. On the basis of spectroscopic measurements for 2, it was confirmed that the peroxo complex 2 has a trans-μ-1,2 fashion. Additionally, the peroxo complex 2 was reacted with benzoate anion as a bridging agent to give a peroxo complex 3. The results of resonance Raman and 1H-NMR studies supported that the peroxo complex 3 is a cis-μ-1,2-peroxodiiron(III) complex. These spectral features were interpreted by using DFT calculations. Pistachio and walnut shells accumulate in large quantities as waste during food processing and represent a promising lignocellulosic biomass for the extraction of valuable components. Subcritical water technology was used as an environmentally friendly technique to study the extraction of active ingredients and other valuable degradation products from walnut and pistachio waste. Subcritical water extraction (SWE) was carried out under different process conditions (temperature (150–300 °C) and short reaction times (15–60 min)) and compared with conventional extraction using different organic solvents (acetone, 50% acetone and ethanol). The extracts obtained from pistachio and walnut shell waste are rich in various bioactive and valuable components. The highest contents of total phenols (127.08 mg GA/g extract at 300 °C for 15 min, from walnut shells), total flavonoids (10.18 mg QU/g extract at 200 °C for 60 min, from pistachio shells), total carbohydrates (602.14 mg TCH/g extract at 200 °C for 60 min, from walnut shells) and antioxidant activity (91% at 300 °C, for 60 min, from pistachio shells) were determined when the extracts were obtained via subcritical water. High contents of total phenols (up to 86.17 mg GA/g extract) were also determined in the conventional extracts obtained with ethanol. Using the HPLC method, sugars and their valuable derivatives were determined in the extracts, with glucose, fructose, furfurals (5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and furfural) and levulinic acid being the most abundant in the extracts obtained by subcritical water. The results show that subcritical water technology enables better exploitation of biowaste materials than conventional extraction methods with organic solvents, as it provides a higher yields of bioactive components such as phenolic compounds and thus extracts with high antioxidant activity, while at the same time producing degradation products that are valuable secondary raw materials. Distillation is significantly influenced by energy costs, prompting a need to explore effective strategies for reducing energy consumption. Among these, heat integration is a key approach, but evaluating its efficiency is paramount. Therefore, this study presents exergy as an energy quality indicator, analyzing irreversibility and efficiencies in tetrahydrofuran/water and acetone/chloroform distillations. Both systems have equimolar feed streams, yielding products with 99.99 mol% purity. The simulations are performed using Aspen Plus™, enabling evaluation at the column level, as a standalone process, or from a lean perspective that considers integration opportunities with other plants. The results show that, despite anticipated energy savings from heat integration, economic viability depends on pressure sensitivity. The results demonstrate that heat-integrated extractive distillation for acetone/chloroform raises utility energy consumption. Exergy calculations comparing standalone and total site integration reveal the variation in distillation efficiency with operation mode. Global exergy efficiency in both extractive and pressure-swing distillation depends on the fate of condenser duty. In heat-integrated extractive distillation, global exergy efficiency drops from 8.7% to 5.7% for tetrahydrofuran/water and 11.5% to 8.3% for acetone/chloroform. Similarly, heat-integrated pressure-swing distillation sees global exergy efficiency decrease from 34.2% to 23.7% for tetrahydrofuran/water and 9.5% to 3.6% for acetone/chloroform, underscoring the nuanced impact of heat integration, urging careful process design consideration.
