De-mining operations are of critical importance for humanitarian efforts and safety in conflict-affected regions. In this paper, we address the challenge of enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of mine detection systems. We present an innovative Deep Learning architecture tailored for pulse induction-based Metallic Mine Detectors (MMD), so called DL-MMD. Our methodology leverages deep neural networks to distinguish amongst nine distinct materials with an exceptional validation accuracy of 93.5%. This high level of precision enables us not only to differentiate between anti-personnel mines, without metal plates but also to detect minuscule 0.2-g vertical paper pins in both mineralized soil and non-mineralized environments. Moreover, through comparative analysis, we demonstrate a substantial 3% and 7% improvement (approx.) in accuracy performance compared to the traditional K-Nearest Neighbors and Support Vector Machine classifiers, respectively. The fusion of deep neural networks with the pulse induction-based MMD not only presents a cost-effective solution but also significantly expedites decision-making processes in de-mining operations, ultimately contributing to improved safety and effectiveness in these critical endeavors. The retinal impulse signal is the basic carrier of visual information. It records the distribution of light on the retina. However, its direct conversion to a scene image is difficult due to the nonlinear characteristics of its distribution. Therefore, the use of artificial neural network to reconstruct the scene from retinal spikes has become an important research area. This paper proposes the architecture of a neural network based on vector quantization, where the feature vectors of spike trains are extracted, compressed, and stored using a feature extraction and compression network. During the decoding process, the nearest neighbour search method is used to find the nearest feature vector corresponding to each feature vector in the feature map. Finally, a reconstruction network is used to decode a new feature map composed of matching feature vectors to obtain a visual scene. This paper also verifies the impact of vector quantization on the characteristics of pulse signals by comparing experiments and visualizing the characteristics before and after vector quantization. The network delivers promising performance when evaluated on different datasets, demonstrating that this research is of great significance for improving relevant applications in the fields of retinal image processing and artificial intelligence. The rising population of millennials, coupled with Digital Assistants (DA) and online purchasing trends among consumers have gained increasing attention by global marketers. The study evaluates the influence of DA attributes on the purchasing intention (PUI) of millennials. A combined approach of PLS-SEM, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) is used to predict the PUI of 345 millennials. Also, multi-group analysis is employed to uncover the influence of gender on the relationship between PUI and DA attributes. The findings suggest that DA attributes may amplify purchasing intention among millennials, especially through perceived interactivity and anthropomorphism. Further, the moderating role of gender was found significant on the inter-relationship of perceived interactivity and PUI. This research is a pioneer study in the area of artificial intelligence, conversational commerce, DA and AI-powered chatbots. To investigate how the petroleum industry evaluates and selects powerful cloud service providers, first, an evaluation index system including 25 indices such as scalability and private data protection is built. This index system can systematically examine the comprehensive strengths of cloud service providers. Aiming to solve the problems that the traditional expert evaluation method has high requirements on expert experience and is easily affected by subjective factors, a novel artificial intelligence evaluation model named TentISSA-BPNN is proposed. The objective evaluation ability of this model can be effectively used in evaluation research on cloud service providers for petroleum enterprises. In this model, the SSA algorithm is optimized by Tent chaotic mapping and adaptive inertia weight; an algorithm, TentISSA, that has good stability and fast convergence speed is designed and proposed; and the BPNN is improved with TentISSA to obtain more accurate evaluation results. To evaluate the performance of the TentISSA algorithm, nine unimodal and multimodal functions are selected in this paper to test the convergence accuracy. Then, seven models are selected as the control groups to validate the effectiveness and performance of the TentISSA-BPNN evaluation model proposed in this paper. Finally, the preprocessed data of the candidate cloud service providers are input into the trained neural network model proposed in this paper for evaluation. Based on the ranking of the evaluation scores, the comprehensive strengths of the cloud service providers are obtained to provide a decision-making reference for managers of petroleum enterprises in the process of choosing cloud service providers. Recently, skin cancer is one of the spread and dangerous cancers around the world. Early detection of skin cancer can reduce mortality. Traditional methods for skin cancer detection are painful, time-consuming, expensive, and may cause the disease to spread out. Dermoscopy is used for noninvasive diagnosis of skin cancer. Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a vital role in diseases' diagnosis especially in biomedical engineering field. The automated detection systems based on AI reduce the complications in the traditional methods and can improve skin cancer's diagnosis rate. In this paper, automated early detection system for skin cancer dermoscopic images using artificial intelligent is presented. Adaptive snake (AS) and region growing (RG) algorithms are used for automated segmentation and compared with each other. The results show that AS is accurate and efficient (accuracy = 96%) more than RG algorithm (accuracy = 90%). Artificial Neural networks (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms are used for automated classification compared with each other. The proposed system with ANN algorithm shows high accuracy (94%), precision (96%), specificity (95.83%), sensitivity (recall) (92.30%), and F1-score (0.94). With the continuous development and combined application of cloud computing and artificial intelligence, some new methods have emerged to reduce task execution time for training neural network models in a cloud-edge collaborative environment. The most attractive method is neural network model segmentation. However, many factors affect the segmentation point, such as resource allocation, system energy consumption, load balancing, and network Bandwidth allocation. Some segmentation methods consider the shortest task execution time, which ignores the utilization of resources at the edge and can result in resource waste. Additionally, these factors are difficult to measure, which presents a challenge in calculating the best segmentation point to achieve the goal of maximum resource utilization and minimum task execution time. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a cloud-edge collaborative task scheduling method based on model segmentation (CECMS). This method first analyzes the factors affecting the segmentation point of the model and then obtains accurate factors that affect the segmentation point calculation through the pre-execution method. Furthermore, a multi-objective solution algorithm is improved to calculate the optimal model segmentation point. And tasks are separately offloaded to the edge and cloud based on the optimal model segmentation point. Finally, the experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of this method. Finally, the effectiveness of the CECMS method was verified through simulation experiments. Compared with the Dynamic Adaptive DNN Surgery (DADS) method and an adaptive DNN inference acceleration framework algorithm with end–edge–cloud collaborative computing algorithm (ADC), CECMS achieves the same effectiveness as DADS and ADC in optimizing task execution time by comprehensively considering the utilization of edge resources and minimizing task execution time, while also effectively ensuring resource utilization. Across the globe, governments are developing policies and strategies to reduce carbon emissions to address climate change. Monitoring the impact of governments' carbon reduction policies can significantly enhance our ability to combat climate change and meet emissions reduction targets. One promising area in this regard is the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in carbon reduction policy and strategy monitoring. While researchers have explored applications of AI on data from various sources, including sensors, satellites, and social media, to identify areas for carbon emissions reduction, AI applications in tracking the effect of governments' carbon reduction plans have been limited. This study presents an AI framework based on long short-term memory (LSTM) and statistical process control (SPC) for the monitoring of variations in carbon emissions, using UK annual CO2 emission (per capita) data, covering a period between 1750 and 2021. This paper used LSTM to develop a surrogate model for the UK's carbon emissions characteristics and behaviours. As observed in our experiments, LSTM has better predictive abilities than ARIMA, Exponential Smoothing and feedforward artificial neural networks (ANN) in predicting CO2 emissions on a yearly prediction horizon. Using the deviation of the recorded emission data from the surrogate process, the variations and trends in these behaviours are then analysed using SPC, specifically Shewhart individual/moving range control charts. The result shows several assignable variations between the mid-1990s and 2021, which correlate with some notable UK government commitments to lower carbon emissions within this period. The framework presented in this paper can help identify periods of significant deviations from a country's normal CO2 emissions, which can potentially result from the government's carbon reduction policies or activities that can alter the amount of CO2 emissions. Artificial neural networks (ANNs), inspired by the human brain's network of neurons and synapses, enable computing machines and systems to execute cognitive tasks, thus embodying artificial intelligence (AI). Since the performance of ANNs generally improves with the expansion of the network size, and also most of the computation time is spent for matrix operations, AI computation have been performed not only using the general-purpose central processing unit (CPU) but also architectures that facilitate parallel computation, such as graphic processing units (GPUs) and custom-designed application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Nevertheless, the substantial energy consumption stemming from frequent data transfers between processing units and memory has remained a persistent challenge. In response, a novel approach has emerged: an in-memory computing architecture harnessing analog memory elements. This innovation promises a notable advancement in energy efficiency. The core of this analog AI hardware accelerator lies in expansive arrays of non-volatile memory devices, known as resistive processing units (RPUs). These RPUs facilitate massively parallel matrix operations, leading to significant enhancements in both performance and energy efficiency. Electrochemical random-access memory (ECRAM), leveraging ion dynamics in secondary-ion battery materials, has emerged as a promising candidate for RPUs. ECRAM achieves over 1000 memory states through precise ion movement control, prompting early-stage research into material stacks such as mobile ion species and electrolyte materials. Crucially, the analog states in ECRAMs update symmetrically with pulse number (or voltage polarity), contributing to high network performance. Recent strides in device engineering in planar and three-dimensional structures and the understanding of ECRAM operation physics have marked significant progress in a short research period. This paper aims to review ECRAM material advancements through literature surveys, offering a systematic discussion on engineering assessments for ion control and a physical understanding of array-level demonstrations. Finally, the review outlines future directions for improvements, co-optimization, and multidisciplinary collaboration in circuits, algorithms, and applications to develop energy-efficient, next-generation AI hardware systems. The health management of railway signal equipment in the high-speed railway is a key link between intelligent operation and maintenance. Accurately predicting the health state of compensation capacitors is of great significance to ensure the reliable work of track circuits. This paper proposes an improved deep neural network algorithm focusing on the problem of long-term accurate health forecasts for compensation capacitors. First, establishing a transmission state model for degradation mechanism mining, the difference function that can quantitatively evaluate features is defined by piecewise processing cab signaling receiving voltage. Introducing the degradation model, predictive driving under both model and data is implemented. Then, the convolutional neural networks and bidirectional long–short-term memory are combined and improved to construct a novel artificial intelligence combination strategy, while parameters are optimized based on the sparrow search algorithm. Finally, facing the conditional repair of compensation capacitors, we set a reasonable threshold for the occurrence of hidden dangers to complete fault warning. This novel and practical approach effectively explores the procedure of prognosis and health management, while the refined maintenance will better utilize current monitoring information, helping the intelligence and accuracy of safety control decision-making. We present here an artificial intelligence model based on deep learning for semantic segmentation of dermatoscopic images of skin neoplasms. The model was trained using an annotated image database. This paper discusses the challenge of increasing diagnostic accuracy using a two-level procedure based on artificial intelligence: 1) first, the object of medical interest is segmented; 2) the object is then classified. The present work is proposed as part of the first stage. Experimental studies (training set 583 images, test set 73 images) demonstrated high segmentation accuracy (Jaccard index 0.93) as compared with known methods. Integrated circuit (IC) testing presents complex problems that for large circuits are exceptionally difficult to solve by traditional computing techniques. To deal with unmanageable time complexity, engineers often rely on human "hunches" and "heuristics" learned through experience. Training computers to adopt these human skills is referred to as machine intelligence (MI) or machine learning (ML). This survey examines applications of such methods to test analog, radio frequency (RF), digital, and memory circuits. It also summarizes ML applications to hardware security and emerging technologies, highlighting challenges and potential research directions. Semantic relatedness is one of the most significant aspects of natural language processing. It has been identified as a critical technology for developing intelligent systems like Siri, Microsoft Ice, Cortana, and Xiaoai. In 2014, SemEval ranked SR as the top task. While many existing studies have focused on analyzing the entailment of single phrases, advancements in deep learning have made it possible to analyze complete sentences or texts. While the natural parallelism of membrane computing has shown promise for data processing, harnessing this potential to advance semantic relatedness remains an open problem yet to be tackled. This paper proposes a novel Siamese Manhattan LSTM-SNP approach (SiMaLSTM-SNP) for the SR problem. The approach uses a collaborative Word2vec and 10-Layer Attention strategy to represent and extract sentence pairs and a Siamese LSTM-SNP structure to calculate the hidden states of sentences. The multi-head self-attention layer identifies text associations and redistributes hidden state weights. The last hidden state is extracted, and the relatedness score is calculated using the Manhattan distance. The experiments demonstrate that SiMaLSTM-SNP outperforms 17 classical SR baselines and 7 novel approaches on the standard datasets SICK and STS in terms of mean square error performance. AI-enabled ECGs have previously been shown to accurately predict patient sex in adults and correlate with sex hormone levels. We aimed to test the ability of AI-enabled ECGs to predict sex in the pediatric population and study the influence of pubertal development. AI-enabled ECG models were created using a convolutional neural network trained on pediatric 10-second, 12-lead ECGs. The first model was trained de novo using pediatric data. The second model used transfer learning from a previously validated adult data-derived algorithm. We analyzed the first ECG from 90,133 unique pediatric patients (aged ≤18 years) recorded between 1987–2022, and divided the cohort into training, validation, and testing datasets. Subgroup analysis was performed on prepubertal (0–7 years), peripubertal (8–14 years), and postpubertal (15–18 years) patients. The cohort was 46.7% male, with 21,678 prepubertal, 26,740 peripubertal, and 41,715 postpubertal children. The de novo pediatric model demonstrated 81% accuracy and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.91. Model sensitivity was 0.79, specificity was 0.83, positive predicted value was 0.84, and the negative predicted value was 0.78, for the entire test cohort. The model's discriminatory ability was highest in postpubertal (AUC = 0.98), lower in the peripubertal age group (AUC = 0.91), and poor in the prepubertal age group (AUC = 0.67). There was no significant performance difference observed between the transfer learning and de novo models. Predicting postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) before delivery is crucial for enhancing patient outcomes, enabling timely transfer and implementation of prophylactic therapies. We attempted to utilize machine learning (ML) using basic pre-labor clinical data and laboratory measurements to predict postpartum Hemoglobin (Hb) in non-complicated singleton pregnancies. The local databases of two academic care centers on patient delivery were incorporated into the current study. Patients with preexisting coagulopathy, traumatic cases, and allogenic blood transfusion were excluded from all analyses. The association of pre-delivery variables with 24-h post-delivery hemoglobin level was evaluated using feature selection with Elastic Net regression and Random Forest algorithms. A suite of ML algorithms was employed to predict post-delivery Hb levels. Out of 2051 pregnant women, 1974 were included in the final analysis. After data pre-processing and redundant variable removal, the top predictors selected via feature selection for predicting post-delivery Hb were parity (B: 0.09 [0.05–0.12]), gestational age, pre-delivery hemoglobin (B:0.83 [0.80–0.85]) and fibrinogen levels (B:0.01 [0.01–0.01]), and pre-labor platelet count (B*1000: 0.77 [0.30–1.23]). Among the trained algorithms, artificial neural network provided the most accurate model (Root mean squared error: 0.62), which was subsequently deployed as a web-based calculator: https://predictivecalculators.shinyapps.io/ANN-HB. The current study shows that ML models could be utilized as accurate predictors of indirect measures of PPH and can be readily incorporated into healthcare systems. Early diagnosis and accurate prognosis of colorectal cancer is critical for determining optimal treatment plans and maximizing patient outcomes, especially as the disease progresses into liver metastases. Computed tomography (CT) is a frontline tool for this task; however, the preservation of predictive radiomic features is highly dependent on the scanning protocol and reconstruction algorithm. We hypothesized that image reconstruction with a high-frequency kernel could result in a better characterization of liver metastases features via deep neural networks. This kernel produces images that appear noisier but preserve more sinogram information. A simulation pipeline was developed to study the effects of imaging parameters on the ability to characterize the features of liver metastases. This pipeline utilizes a fractal approach to generate a diverse population of shapes representing virtual metastases, and then it superimposes them on a realistic CT liver region to perform a virtual CT scan using CatSim. Datasets of 10,000 liver metastases were generated, scanned, and reconstructed using either standard or high-frequency kernels. These data were used to train and validate deep neural networks to recover crafted metastases characteristics, such as internal heterogeneity, edge sharpness, and edge fractal dimension. In the absence of noise, models scored, on average, 12.2% ( α = 0.012 ) and 7.5% ( α = 0.049) lower squared error for characterizing edge sharpness and fractal dimension, respectively, when using high-frequency reconstructions compared to standard. However, the differences in performance were statistically insignificant when a typical level of CT noise was simulated in the clinical scan. Our results suggest that high-frequency reconstruction kernels can better preserve information for downstream artificial intelligence-based radiomic characterization, provided that noise is limited. Scour depth downstream of weirs is considered one of the most important hydraulic problems, which greatly influences the stability of weirs. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) methods have become increasingly popular in modeling hydraulic variables, especially scour depth, because they can capture nonlinear relationships between input variables and their associated objectives. Despite their importance, these models have problems with hyperparameter tuning in scour depth modeling due to their structures, so algorithms must be used to tune the hyperparameters. Moreover, these algorithms are usually tuned by using the trial-and-error method to select the hyperparameters such as the number of hidden nodes, transfer function, and learning rate, and in this case, the main problem is overfitting during the training phase. To solve these problems, the high-order response surface method (HORSM), an improved version of the response surface method (RSM), is used as an alternative approach for the first time in this study to predict the scour depth. The HORSM model is based on high-order polynomial functions (from two to six) compared with the artificial neural network model (ANN). The findings indicate that the fifth order of the HORSM polynomial function yields the most precise predictions, with a higher coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.912 and Willmott Index (WI) of 0.972 compared to the values obtained using ANN (R2 = 0.886 and WI = 0.927). Moreover, the accuracy of the predictions is represented by a reduction of the mean square error by up to 44.17 and 29.01% compared to the classical RSM and ANN, respectively. Designing ultralight conductive aerogels with tailored electrical and mechanical properties is critical for various applications. Conventional approaches rely on iterative, time-consuming experiments across a vast parameter space. Herein, an integrated workflow is developed to combine collaborative robotics with machine learning to accelerate the design of conductive aerogels with programmable properties. An automated pipetting robot is operated to prepare 264 mixtures of Ti3C2Tx MXene, cellulose, gelatin, and glutaraldehyde at different ratios/loadings. After freeze-drying, the aerogels' structural integrity is evaluated to train a support vector machine classifier. Through 8 active learning cycles with data augmentation, 162 unique conductive aerogels are fabricated/characterized via robotics-automated platforms, enabling the construction of an artificial neural network prediction model. The prediction model conducts two-way design tasks: (1) predicting the aerogels' physicochemical properties from fabrication parameters and (2) automating the inverse design of aerogels for specific property requirements. The combined use of model interpretation and finite element simulations validates a pronounced correlation between aerogel density and compressive strength. The model-suggested aerogels with high conductivity, customized strength, and pressure insensitivity allow for compression-stable Joule heating for wearable thermal management. Machine learning-assisted robots produce MXene aerogels containing cellulose, gelatin, and glutaraldehyde, fabricating 162 compositions. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological condition characterized by the disruption of both motor and non-motor functions. Given the absence of a definitive diagnostic method, it is crucial to uncover its root causes. Consequently, individuals displaying symptoms of Parkinson's disease can promptly receive treatment and comprehensive care. To address this, our study aims to develop an AI-powered system capable of detecting Parkinson's disease and subsequently evaluating the primary factors influencing its development. We collected 12 distinct datasets from the well-known PPMI database, covering various medical assessments such as motor abilities, olfaction, cognition, sleep patterns, and depressive symptoms. Subsequently, we refined this raw data using advanced search techniques to tailor it to our model's requirements. Moreover, we introduced a novel labeling approach known as the majority voting algorithm. Following data preparation, we conducted Single and Multi-Modality analyses, focusing on single-treatment approaches and integrating multiple treatments for a comprehensive therapeutic strategy. To analyze these both, we employed five distinct Machine Learning algorithms. Notably, the Support Vector Machine (linear) emerged as the top performer, reaching an accuracy of 100% in both single and multimodality analysis. Furthermore, we employed four tree-based models for feature selection, with the Gradient Boosted Decision Tree excels in identifying the most significant features. IgA nephropathy progresses to kidney failure, making early detection important. However, definitive diagnosis depends on invasive kidney biopsy. This study aimed to develop non-invasive prediction models for IgA nephropathy using machine learning. We collected retrospective data on demographic characteristics, blood tests, and urine tests of the patients who underwent kidney biopsy. The dataset was divided into derivation and validation cohorts, with temporal validation. We employed five machine learning models—eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), LightGBM, Random Forest, Artificial Neural Networks, and 1 Dimentional-Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN)—and logistic regression, evaluating performance via the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and explored variable importance through SHapley Additive exPlanations method. The study included 1268 participants, with 353 (28%) diagnosed with IgA nephropathy. In the derivation cohort, LightGBM achieved the highest AUROC of 0.913 (95% CI 0.906–0.919), significantly higher than logistic regression, Artificial Neural Network, and 1D-CNN, not significantly different from XGBoost and Random Forest. In the validation cohort, XGBoost demonstrated the highest AUROC of 0.894 (95% CI 0.850–0.935), maintaining its robust performance. Key predictors identified were age, serum albumin, IgA/C3, and urine red blood cells, aligning with existing clinical insights. Artificial intelligence (AI) imitates the human brain's capacity for problem-solving and making decisions by using computers and other devices. People engage with artificial intelligence-enabled products like virtual agents, social bots, and language-generation software, to name a few. The paradigms of communication theory, which have historically put a significant focus on human-to-human communication, do not easily match these gadgets. AI in multidimensional touch is the subject of this review article, which provides a comprehensive analysis of the most recent research published in the field of AI, specifically related to communication. Additionally, we considered several theories and models (communication theory, AI-based persuasion theory, social exchange theory, Frames of mind, Neural network model, L-LDA model, and Routine model) to explain a complex phenomenon and to create a conceptual framework that is appropriate for this goal and a voluntary relationship between two or more people that lasts for an extended period. Communication and media studies focus on human–machine communication (HMC), a rapidly developing research area. It is our intention to continue investigating the beneficial and detrimental effects of artificial intelligence on human communication as well as to identify novel concepts, theories, and challenges as the research process develops. This study aims to couple CFD with artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the fluid forces that arise when a flowing fluid interacts with obstacles installed in the flow domain. The momentum equation elucidating the flow has been simulated by adopting the finite element method (FEM) for a range of rheological and kinematic conditions. Hydrodynamic forces, including pressure drop between the back and front of the obstacle, surface drag, and lift variations, are measured on the outer surface of the cylinder via CFD simulations. This data has subsequently been fed into a Feed-Forward Back (FFB) propagation neural network for the prediction of such forces with completely unknown data. For all cases, higher predictivity is achieved for the drag coefficient (CD) and lift coefficient (CL) since the mean square error (MSE) is within ± 2% and the coefficient of determination (R) is approximately 99% for all the cases. The influence of pertinent parameters like the power law index (n) and Reynolds number (Re) on velocity, pressure, and drag and lift coefficients is also presented for limited cases. Introduction: Inaccurate, untimely diagnoses of fundus diseases leads to vision-threatening complications and even blindness. We built a deep learning platform (DLP) for automatic detection of 30 fundus diseases using ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography (UWFFA) with deep experts aggregation. Methods: This retrospective and cross-sectional database study included a total of 61,609 UWFFA images dating from 2016 to 2021, involving more than 3364 subjects in multiple centers across China. All subjects were divided into 30 different groups. The state-of-the-art convolutional neural network architecture, ConvNeXt, was chosen as the backbone to train and test the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) of the proposed system on test data and external test date. We compared the classification performance of the proposed system with that of ophthalmologists, including two retinal specialists. Results: We built a DLP to analyze UWFFA, which can detect up to 30 fundus diseases, with a frequency-weighted average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.940 in the primary test dataset and 0.954 in the external multi-hospital test dataset. The tool shows comparable accuracy with retina specialists in diagnosis and evaluation. Conclusions: This is the first study on a large-scale UWFFA dataset for multi-retina disease classification. We believe that our UWFFA DLP advances the diagnosis by artificial intelligence (AI) in various retinal diseases and would contribute to labor-saving and precision medicine especially in remote areas. Educational big data significantly impacts education, and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), a crucial learning approach, have evolved to be more intelligent with these technologies. Deep neural networks have significantly advanced the crucial task within MOOCs, predicting student academic performance. However, most deep learning-based methods usually ignore the temporal information and interaction behaviors during the learning activities, which can effectively enhance the model's predictive accuracy. To tackle this, we formulate the learning processes of e-learning students as dynamic temporal graphs to encode the temporal information and interaction behaviors during their studying. We propose a novel academic performance prediction model (APP-TGN) based on temporal graph neural networks. Specifically, in APP-TGN, a dynamic graph is constructed from online learning activity logs. A temporal graph network with low-high filters learns potential academic performance variations encoded in dynamic graphs. Furthermore, a global sampling module is developed to mitigate the problem of false correlations in deep learning-based models. Finally, multi-head attention is utilized for predicting academic outcomes. Extensive experiments are conducted on a well-known public dataset. An increasing number of artificial intelligence (AI) tools are moving towards the clinical realm in histopathology and across medicine. The introduction of such tools will bring several benefits to diagnostic specialities, namely increased diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, however, as no AI tool is infallible, their use will inevitably introduce novel errors. These errors made by AI tools are, most fundamentally, misclassifications made by a computational algorithm. Understanding of how these translate into clinical impact on patients is often lacking, meaning true reporting of AI tool safety is incomplete. In this Perspective we consider AI diagnostic tools in histopathology, which are predominantly assessed in terms of technical performance metrics such as sensitivity, specificity and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Although these metrics are essential and allow tool comparison, they alone give an incomplete picture of how an AI tool's errors could impact a patient's diagnosis, management and prognosis. We instead suggest assessing and reporting AI tool errors from a pathological and clinical stance, demonstrating how this is done in studies on human pathologist errors, and giving examples where available from pathology and radiology. Although this seems a significant task, we discuss ways to move towards this approach in terms of study design, guidelines and regulation. Cardiac digital twins provide a physics and physiology informed framework to deliver personalized medicine. However, high-fidelity multi-scale cardiac models remain a barrier to adoption due to their extensive computational costs. Artificial Intelligence-based methods can make the creation of fast and accurate whole-heart digital twins feasible. We use Latent Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (LNODEs) to learn the pressure-volume dynamics of a heart failure patient. Our surrogate model is trained from 400 simulations while accounting for 43 parameters describing cell-to-organ cardiac electromechanics and cardiovascular hemodynamics. LNODEs provide a compact representation of the 3D-0D model in a latent space by means of an Artificial Neural Network that retains only 3 hidden layers with 13 neurons per layer and allows for numerical simulations of cardiac function on a single processor. We employ LNODEs to perform global sensitivity analysis and parameter estimation with uncertainty quantification in 3 hours of computations, still on a single processor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing communication and technology-driven content creation and is also being used more frequently in education. Despite these advancements, AI-powered automated scoring in international large-scale assessments (ILSAs) remains largely unexplored due to the scoring challenges associated with processing large amounts of multilingual responses. However, due to their low-stakes nature, ILSAs are an ideal ground for innovations and exploring new methodologies. Methods: This study proposes combining state-of-the-art machine translations (i.e., Google Translate & ChatGPT) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) to mitigate two key concerns of human scoring: inconsistency and high expense. We applied AI-based automated scoring to multilingual student responses from eight countries and six different languages, using six constructed response items from TIMSS 2019. Results: Automated scoring displayed comparable performance to human scoring, especially when the ANNs were trained and tested on ChatGPT-translated responses. Furthermore, psychometric characteristics derived from machine scores generally exhibited similarity to those obtained from human scores. These results can be considered as supportive evidence for the validity of automated scoring for survey assessments. Conclusions: This study highlights that automated scoring integrated with the recent machine translation holds great promise for consistent and resource-efficient scoring in ILSAs. Ultrashort pulses, characterized by their short pulse duration, diverse spectral content, and high peak power, are widely used in fields including laser processing, optical storage, biomedical sciences, and laser imaging. The complex, highly-nonlinear process of ultrashort pulse evolution within fiber lasers is influenced by numerous aspects such as dispersion, loss, gain, and nonlinear effects. Traditionally, the split-step Fourier transforms method is employed for simulating ultrashort pulses in fiber lasers, which involves traversing multiple parameters within the fiber to attain the pulse's optimal state. The simulation is a significantly time-consuming process. Here, we use a neural network model to fit and predict the impact of multiple parameters on the pulse characteristics within fiber lasers, enabling parameter optimization through genetic algorithms to determine the optimal pulse duration, pulse energy, and peak power. Integrating artificial intelligence algorithms simplifies the acquisition of optimal pulse parameters and enhances our understanding of multiple parameters' impact on the pulse characteristics. Wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) are being used to quantify gait characteristics that are associated with increased fall risk, but the current limitation is the lack of contextual information that would clarify IMU data. Use of wearable video-based cameras would provide a comprehensive understanding of an individual's habitual fall risk, adding context to clarify abnormal IMU data. Generally, there is taboo when suggesting the use of wearable cameras to capture real-world video, clinical and patient apprehension due to ethical and privacy concerns. This perspective proposes that routine use of wearable cameras could be realized within digital medicine through AI-based computer vision models to obfuscate/blur/shade sensitive information while preserving helpful contextual information for a comprehensive patient assessment. Specifically, no person sees the raw video data to understand context, rather AI interprets the raw video data first to blur sensitive objects and uphold privacy. That may be more routinely achieved than one imagines as contemporary resources exist. Here, to showcase/display the potential an exemplar model is suggested via off-the-shelf methods to detect and blur sensitive objects (e.g., people) with an accuracy of 88%. Here, the benefit of the proposed approach includes a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's free-living fall risk (from free-living IMU-based gait) without compromising privacy. More generally, the video and AI approach could be used beyond fall risk to better inform habitual experiences and challenges across a range of clinical cohorts. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently experiencing a bloom driven by deep learning (DL) techniques, which rely on networks of connected simple computing units operating in parallel. The low communication bandwidth between memory and processing units in conventional von Neumann machines does not support the requirements of emerging applications that rely extensively on large sets of data. More recent computing paradigms, such as high parallelization and near-memory computing, help alleviate the data communication bottleneck to some extent, but paradigm- shifting concepts are required. Memristors, a novel beyond-complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, are a promising choice for memory devices due to their unique intrinsic device-level properties, enabling both storing and computing with a small, massively-parallel footprint at low power. Theoretically, this directly translates to a major boost in energy efficiency and computational throughput, but various practical challenges remain. In this work we review the latest efforts for achieving hardware-based memristive artificial neural networks (ANNs), describing with detail the working principia of each block and the different design alternatives with their own advantages and disadvantages, as well as the tools required for accurate estimation of performance metrics. Ultimately, we aim to provide a comprehensive protocol of the materials and methods involved in memristive neural networks to those aiming to start working in this field and the experts looking for a holistic approach. Deep neural networks have revolutionized several domains, including autonomous driving, cancer detection, and drug design, and are the foundation for massive artificial intelligence models. However, hardware neural network reports still mainly focus on shallow networks (2 to 5 layers). Implementing deep neural networks in hardware is challenging due to the layer-by-layer structure, resulting in long training times, signal interference, and low accuracy due to gradient explosion/vanishing. Here, we utilize negative ultraviolet photoconductive light-emitting memristors with intrinsic parallelism and hardware-software co-design to achieve electrical information's optical cross-layer transmission. We propose a hybrid ultra-deep photoelectric neural network and an ultra-deep super-resolution reconstruction neural network using light-emitting memristors and cross-layer block, expanding the networks to 54 and 135 layers, respectively. Further, two networks enable transfer learning, approaching or surpassing software-designed networks in multi-dataset recognition and high-resolution restoration tasks. These proposed strategies show great potential for high-precision multifunctional hardware neural networks and edge artificial intelligence. Parallel information transmission components and hardware strategies are still lacking in neural networks. Virtual Rehabilitation (VRehab) is a promising approach to improving the physical and mental functioning of patients living in the community. The use of VRehab technology results in the generation of multi-modal datasets collected through various devices. This presents opportunities for the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in VRehab, namely the measurement, detection, and prediction of various patients' health outcomes. The objective of this scoping review was to explore the applications and effectiveness of incorporating AI into home-based VRehab programs. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science databases, and Google Scholar were searched from inception until June 2023 for studies that applied AI for the delivery of VRehab programs to the homes of adult patients. After screening 2172 unique titles and abstracts and 51 full-text studies, 13 studies were included in the review. A variety of AI algorithms were applied to analyze data collected from various sensors and make inferences about patients' health outcomes, most involving evaluating patients' exercise quality and providing feedback to patients. The AI algorithms used in the studies were mostly fuzzy rule-based methods, template matching, and deep neural networks. Despite the growing body of literature on the use of AI in VRehab, very few studies have examined its use in patients' homes. Current research suggests that integrating AI with home-based VRehab can lead to improved rehabilitation outcomes for patients. However, further research is required to fully assess the effectiveness of various forms of AI-driven home-based VRehab, taking into account its unique challenges and using standardized metrics. Water resource management and crop growth control require the calculation of reference evapotranspiration (ET0), but meteorological data can often be incomplete, necessitating models with minimal inputs. This study was conducted in Iran's arid synoptic stations of Sirjan and Kerman, where data scarcity is severe. Penman–Monteith FAO-56 was selected as the target data for modeling artificial neural network (ANN), fuzzy neural adaptive inference system (ANFIS), and ANN-gray wolf optimization (ANN-GWO). The performance of these models was evaluated using an input dataset consisting of the current station's minimum and maximum temperatures, ET0, and the wind speed of the nearby station (external data) in three different combinations. The models' accuracy was assessed using two widely used criteria: root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2), as well as the empirical Hargreaves equation. In the absence of climatic data, the ANFIS, ANN, and ANN-GWO methods using minimum and maximum temperatures, which are relatively easier to estimate, outperformed the empirical Hargreaves equation method in both stations. The results demonstrate that the ANFIS method performed better than ANN and ANN-GWO in all three input combinations. All three methods showed improvement when external data (wind speed and ET0 of the adjacent station) were used. Ultimately, the ANFIS method using minimum and maximum temperatures and the adjacent station's ET0 in Kerman and Sirjan yielded the best results, with an RMSE of 0.33 and 0.36, respectively.
