Purpose: The current paper is devoted to the analysis of the mediation of non-heteronormative masculinities within discourses on intimate partner violence (IPV) and domestic violence and abuse (DVA) in contemporary Russian media. Methods: The article presents a discourse analysis of five samples of media texts devoted to IPV and/or DVA among LGBTQ people. The media texts were sampled through a keyword search completed on the websites of two openly pro-LGBTQ media outlets (news and entertainment portals Meduza and Takie Dela) and two media outlets catered for predominantly LGBTQ audiences (the news and entertainment portal Parni PLUS and the website of the NGO SPID-Tsentr). Results: The interpretative qualitative analysis of the sampled texts demonstrated that the IPV/DVA survivors' confessional narratives are framed within wider discourses on non-heteronormative masculinities, which are represented both as transgressing concepts of hegemonic masculinity and as challenging stereotypes about non-heteronormative masculinities. Conclusions: The outcome of the analysis presented in the paper is that there is evidence of the emergence of new media discourses on IPV and DVA among LGBTQ communities. Drawing on feminist discourses on IPV and DVA in heterosexual relationships and using media strategies of LGBTQ coming-out confessional narratives, the sampled media data reveals an ongoing search for a new language of discussing the relatively new societal problem. Further research into mediation of non-heteronormative male survivors of IPV and DVA promises insightful findings concerning the evolution of discourses on non-heteronormative masculinities in contemporary Russian media. The Chinese nation has evolved through history and is inextricably linked with geographical factors. Since the inception of the concept of "Chinese nation" in the twentieth century, Chinese scholars have made significant contributions to understanding this concept from a historical geography perspective. This paper undertakes an examination and discussion of these contributions, highlighting three main aspects in which Chinese scholars in the twentieth century have significantly enhanced the concept of "Chinese nation" from a historical geography perspective: firstly, escaping the trap of "China Proper" and comprehensively understanding the Chinese nation from a geographical perspective; secondly, breaking the spatial barrier set up by the Great Wall, endowing the Chinese nation with a complete geographical space; thirdly, The Historical Atlas of China clarifying the connection between historical China and modern China, providing a comprehensive geographical basis for understanding the formation and development of the Chinese nation. The paper, contextualized within the historical backdrop, provides an analysis and discourse on these three aspects, indicating that the contributions of scholars in the twentieth century were instrumental in refining the concept of the Chinese nation from a historical geography perspective, illustrating the inseparable connection between nation and geography. The paper reports findings from a study that examining how cross-platform social media analysis can help to map the digital discourse on sustainable mobility and sustainable transport, and enhance the understanding of sociotechnical low-carbon transport transitions. Using the hashtag search queries #sustainabletransport and #sustainablemobility, 33,121 Tweets (2013–2021) and 8,089 Instagram images including captions (2017/2018–2021) were scraped using the Python modules Twint and Instaloader. Quantitative text and sentiment analyses were applied to the Tweets and image captions. Additionally, an automated machine learning-based image analysis of the Instagram images was conducted using object detection via OpenCV. Synthesized results formed the base for a cross-platform analysis inspired by Rogers' method comprising hot topics/key themes, user mentions, sentiment polarity, and co-hashtags. Notably, electromobility emerged as a prominent theme, particularly on Instagram, while #sustainabletransport was closely associated with active travel, notably bicycling, and #sustainablemobility showcased a dominance of electromobility discourse. The study demonstrates the investigative potentials of cross-platform social media analysis studies to enhance the understanding of sociotechnical low-carbon transport transitions. Since the successful containment of COVID-19 in Wuhan in late March 2020, China had implemented a nationwide highly stringent and restrictive zero-COVID policy to manage the pandemic until the sudden swift away from it in early December 2022. How did the Chinese Communist Party discursively construct it as a 'normal' and legitimate policy? Using interpretivism and poststructuralist political theory, this paper examines how Chinese political elites constructed a discourse of danger for the COVID pandemic, with the dominant discursive narratives full of xenophobic and nationalist languages. The discourse framed 'foreigners' as 'threats' to Chinese people's health, advocated that China should rely on home-made vaccines and medicines and, more importantly, argued that the Chinese Communist rule demonstrates 'institutional superiority' over Western governance. This xenophobic and nationalist discourse has lingered on after the dismantling of the zero-COVID policy. There are grounds for us to concern whether China is seeking self-reliance rather than integrating itself with the world. Purpose: This paper deals with criminal court cases of intimate partner violence in queer families (IPV) in Russia. It aims to uncover ways for these families to be recognized in law, even if only for the purposes of deciding cases of violence among LGBT + partners. Methods: The study deploys methods of discourse analysis to uncover powers which produce the texts of court rulings. The article is based on close examination of nine cases of IPV occurred in various places across Russia. Eight cases concern bisexual and lesbian women; one case is about men in a same-sex partnership. Results: The analysis suggests that only the most severe cases of IPV reach criminal courts in Russia (murder, manslaughter, and serious injuries). As courts deal with violence among intimate same-sex partners, they have to discuss LGBT + identities, queer sexualities, and same-sex families more broadly, as well as such forms of violence which are not criminalized but build up to the ultimate violent act (psychological and financial violence, battery). Conclusions: Regardless of reluctance to recognize queer families in family law, same-sex relationships are already recognized in the legal discourse with the help of various categories for the purposes of processing criminal cases. Discourse relation classification is a fundamental task for discourse analysis, which is essential for understanding the structure and connection of texts. Implicit discourse relation classification aims to determine the relationship between adjacent sentences and is very challenging because it lacks explicit discourse connectives as linguistic cues and sufficient annotated training data. In this paper, we propose a discriminative instance selection method to construct synthetic implicit discourse relation data from easy-to-collect explicit discourse relations. An expanded instance consists of an argument pair and its sense label. We introduce the argument pair type classification task, which aims to distinguish between implicit and explicit argument pairs and select the explicit argument pairs that are most similar to natural implicit argument pairs for data expansion. We also propose a simple label-smoothing technique to assign robust sense labels for the selected argument pairs. We evaluate our method on PDTB 2.0 and PDTB 3.0. The results show that our method can consistently improve the performance of the baseline model, and achieve competitive results with the state-of-the-art models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The emergence of ChatGPT, a Generative AI program, has sparked discussions about its teaching and learning value, and concerns about academic integrity in higher education (HE). An extant review of the literature indicates that a scarcity of research exists on GenAI, specifically a synthesis of the official views, guidelines and articles of top-ranked universities on the use, limitations, challenges, and opportunities brought by ChatGPT in the early phase when ChatGPT was released in 2022 until early May 2023, which can offer insights into the concerns and recommendations for educators. Using the corpus assisted discourse analysis approach, this study identified the key themes and emotions elicited by evaluations of the ChatGPT situation from a self-built corpus containing 151 articles from 47 top-ranked U.S. universities and 34 U.K. ones. Our findings indicated three prominent themes discussed on official websites, including ChatGPT as a text and content generator, use of ChatGPT in teaching and learning, and potential implications and opportunities of using ChatGPT in HE. Further examination revealed that bias, concern, worry, threat, fear, and trust were the prevailing emotions relating to ChatGPT. Illustrated with examples collected from our corpus, this paper offers an in-depth discussion of universities' first responses to the use of ChatGPT. We conducted a systematic review of the available peer-reviewed literature that specifically focuses on the combination of sustainability and gender. We analyzed the existing peer-reviewed research regarding the extent to which gender plays a role in the empirical literature, how this is methodologically collected and what understanding of gender is applied in those articles. Our aim is to provide an overview of the current most common fields of research and thus show in which areas gender is already being included in the sustainability sciences and to what extent and in which areas this inclusion has not yet taken place or has only taken place to a limited extent. We identified 1054 papers that matched our criteria and conducted research on at least one sustainable development goal and gender research. Within these papers (i), the overall number of countries where lead authors were located was very high (91 countries). While the majority of lead authors were located in the Global North, less than a third of the articles were led by authors located in the Global South. Furthermore, gender is often just used as a category of empirical analysis rather than a research focus. We were able to identify (ii) a lack in coherent framing of relevant terms. Often no definition of sustainability was given, and only the sustainability goals (SDGs or MDGs) were used as a framework to refer to sustainability. Both gender and sustainability were often used as key words without being specifically addressed. Concerning the knowledge types of sustainability, our expectation that system knowledge dominates the literature was confirmed. While a problem orientation dominates much of the discourse, only a few papers focus on normative or transformative knowledge. (iii) Furthermore, the investigated literature was mainly contributing to few SDGs, with SDG 5 'Gender Equality' accounting for 83% of all contributions, followed by SDG 8 'Decent Work and Economic Growth' (21%), SDG 3 'Good Health and Well-being' (15%) and SDG 4 'Quality Education' (12%). We were additionally able to identify seven research clusters in the landscape of gender in sustainability science. (iv) A broad range of diverse methods was utilized that allow us to approximate different forms of knowledge. Yet within different research clusters, the spectrum of methodologies is rather homogeneous. (v) Overall, in most papers gender is conceptualized in binary terms. This study introduces a comprehensive framework grounded in recurrence analysis, a tool of nonlinear dynamics, to detect potential early warning signals (EWS) for imminent phase transitions in financial systems, with the primary goal of anticipating severe financial crashes. We first conduct a simulation experiment to demonstrate that the indicators based on multiplex recurrence networks (MRNs), namely the average mutual information and the average edge overlap, can indicate state transitions in complex systems. Subsequently, we consider the constituent stocks of the China's and the U.S. stock markets as empirical subjects, and establish MRNs based on multidimensional returns to monitor the nonlinear dynamics of market through the corresponding the indicators and topological structures. Empirical findings indicate that the primary indicators of MRNs offer valuable insights into significant financial events or periods of extreme instability. Notably, average mutual information demonstrates promise as an effective EWS for forecasting forthcoming financial crashes. An in-depth discussion and elucidation of the theoretical underpinnings for employing indicators of MRNs as EWS, the differences in indicator effectiveness, and the possible reasons for variations in the performance of the EWS across the two markets are provided. The aim of this qualitative analysis is to test whether the linguistic evidence available supports the allegation that the participation in these recordings by one of the accused, Mohamed Houli Chemlal, had been planned by his interlocutors. Results show, first, that the exchanges analyzed present features indicative of both spontaneity and (limited) planification. Second, that Houli makes key contributions to the unfolding of the interactions shown in the recordings and that he does so in a cooperative and apparently relaxed manner, which could at best provide only partial support to his allegations. The International Criminal Court (ICC) is responsible for prosecuting individuals for heinous crimes that take place during civil and/or international armed conflicts, including sexual violence. Prosecuting this crime relies primarily on survivor accounts, but witnesses often fear the psychological effects of giving such testimony, particularly because there is a high risk of retraumatization, a stigma associated with victimhood, and a fear of victim-blaming. Thus, the Court's Victims and Witness Unit (VWU) puts forth provisions for questioning vulnerable witnesses, requiring, in part, that questioners avoid embarrassing or offending witnesses. Using a discourse analytic approach, this paper examines transcripts from three recent ICC cases dealing with wartime sexual violence—Bemba, Ongwen, and Katanga and Chui—exploring the discursive strategies employed by prosecutors and defense attorneys in these trials as they navigate arguing their cases before the judges while also tailoring their questions to adhere to the VWU's provisions. I show that adhering to the provisions often involves relying on euphemistic expressions to discuss rape—which enter the trial discourse through linguistic formulations and reformulations—even though these expressions reflect the language used to discuss consensual sex and not sexual violence. Language technologies are gaining momentum as textual information saturates social networks and media outlets, compounded by the growing role of fake news and disinformation. In this context, approaches to represent and analyse public speeches, news releases, social media posts and other types of discourses are becoming crucial. Although there is a large body of literature on text-based machine learning, it tends to focus on lexical and syntactical issues rather than semantic or pragmatic. Being useful, these advances cannot tackle the nuanced and highly context-dependent problems of discourse evaluation that society demands. In this paper, we present IAT/ML, a metamodel and modelling approach to represent and analyse discourses. IAT/ML focuses on semantic and pragmatic issues, thus tackling a little researched area in language technologies. It does so by combining three different modelling approaches: ontological, which focuses on what the discourse is about; argumentation, which deals with how the text justifies what it says; and agency, which provides insights into the speakers' beliefs, desires and intentions. Together, these three modelling approaches make IAT/ML a comprehensive solution to represent and analyse complex discourses towards their understanding, evaluation and fact checking. In recent years, online education has been given more and more attention with the widespread use of the internet. The teaching procedure divides space and makes time for online learning; though teachers cannot control the learners accurately, the state of education calculates learners' learning situation. This paper explains that the discourse analysis method is utilized to examine the online teaching behavior of teachers and student behavior like class attendance, how many are active in class, and learning behavior in online education. Also, discourse analysis will optimize and enhance the classification of the text understood according to their language. After pre-processing, feature extraction was done by utilizing Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency, and feature selection was calculated via utilizing chi-square examination for teacher discourse like learning behavior, languages understood by students, and language types. Moreover, the machine learning-based classification technique Support Vector Machine (SVM) is considered to analyze the teacher discourse in class automatically, and results are compared with existing techniques. This paper introduces moral argument analytics, a technology that provides insights into the use of moral arguments in discourse. We analyse five socio-political corpora of argument annotated data from offline and online discussions, totalling 240k words with 9k arguments, with an average annotation accuracy of 78%. Using a lexicon-based method, we automatically annotate these arguments with moral foundations, achieving an estimated accuracy of 83%. Quantitative analysis allows us to observe statistical patterns and trends in the use of moral arguments, whereas qualitative analysis enables us to understand and explain the communication strategies in the use of moral arguments in different settings. For instance, supporting arguments often rely on Loyalty and Authority, while attacking arguments use Care. We find that online discussions exhibit a greater diversity of moral foundations and a higher negative valence of moral arguments. Online arguers often rely more on Harm rather than Care, Degradation rather than Sanctity. These insights have significant implications for AI applications, particularly in understanding and predicting human and machine moral behaviours. The potential of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process to respond to climate change impacts of development projects can only be realized with the support of policies, regulations, and actors' engagement. While considering climate change in EIA has become partly mandatory through the EU revised Directive in Europe, African countries are still lagging. This paper assesses Tanzanian policies, laws, regulations, and EIA reports to uncover consideration of climate change impacts, adaptation, and mitigation measures, drawing from the transformational role of EIA. The methodology integrates content analysis, interpretive policy analysis, and discourse analysis. The analyses draw from environmental policy, three regulatory documents and three EIA reports in Tanzania using a multi-cases study design. The aim was to understand how considering Climate Change issues in EIA has played out in practice. Results reveal less consideration of climate change issues in EIA. The policy, laws, and regulations do not guide when and how the EIA process should consider climate change-related impacts mitigation and adaptation. The practice of EIA in the country is utterly procedural in line with regulations provisions. Consequently, environmental impact statements only profile the climatology of the study area without conducting a deeper analysis of the historical and future climate to enhance the resilience of proposed projects. The weakness exposed in the laws and regulations contributes to the challenges of responding to the impacts of climate change through the EIA process. It is possible to address climate change issues throughout the project life cycle, including design, approval, implementation, monitoring, and auditing, provided the policy and regulations guide how and when the EIA process should consider climate change issues. Previous research has indicated that healthcare support for sexuality after spinal cord injury appears to be neglected or inadequately provided. The perspectives of people living with spinal cord injuries regarding what is lacking and what support they would like to be provided, and why, has yet to be explored. This paper uses critical theory to explore how societal constructs of sexuality and disability shape how sexuality is supported after a spinal cord injury. To do this, we conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 11 people with a spinal cord injury from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. We drew from the works of various critical disability theorists to analyze what discourses underpinned the experiences people with spinal cord injuries had when receiving sexuality support. Analysis suggested that the following discourses were apparent: (1) broken bodies require repair, (2) sex is penetration, ejaculation then reproduction, and (3) sexual autonomy is required. Findings indicated healthcare professionals need to recognize people with spinal cord injuries as sexual beings with a diverse range of desires, lives, relations, and bodies. Provision of individualized comprehensive high-quality sexuality support is therefore warranted. Calls for a "place-based" approach to sustainability are increasingly common in the field of sustainability transitions and transformations (STT). To critically explore the agendas and politics a call towards place carries, we undertook a corpus-assisted discourse study (CADS) to examine a sample of public and academic texts from 2019 to 2020. Two distinct discourses about place were evident: an environmental discourse framing place as an assemblage of more-than-human constituents and an anthropocentric discourse framing place as a human community. These discourses present vastly different priorities about which species matter, what change entails, and what kind of future we should create. Our findings reflect the emergence of a discourse coalition that advocates for a place-based approach to STT, and we discuss how this viewpoint has continued to emerge since the compilation of our data. Our paper provides an overview of the discursive landscape we encountered, synthesises a central narrative about place-based STT based on what we observed, and provides a critical discussion of the tensions and opportunities that this narrative raises. In doing so, we suggest there remains an opportunity for fruitful dialogue amongst sustainability educators, sustainability practitioners, and researchers to refine what a place-based approach to STT looks like. By demonstrating an application of CADS, we hope to show how digital tools and techniques can be used to research discourses in sustainability. We outline specific opportunities to take this forward, including a broad opportunity to use web-derived corpora to help survey discursive landscapes, and a more specific application to explore discursive dynamics between communities, places, and at different spatial scales. Questions are an essential aspect of decision-making by families and early educators in a range of contexts, and are particularly important during the informal assessment and collaborative planning that characterize home visits. Yet recommendations for questions tend to focus on form alone, such as encouragement to ask open- rather than closed-ended questions. These recommendations have limited practical application because they frame language as decontextualized and power-free, which can contribute to marginalizing families. Instead, when early educators conceptualize questions as part of discourse—rooted in context and imbued with power—they can better understand nuances of questions and ultimately enact shared decision-making with families. This conceptual paper illustrates the potential of discourse theory as a framework to explore questions and their consequences for decision-making power. Linguistic features of questions are presented along with discursive tools adapted from Gee (2014) that researchers and early educators can use to examine how questions contribute to sharing power or maintaining professional control of decisions. Transcripts from previously conducted, ethically approved investigations using discourse analysis exemplify how the tools can be used to examine how questions function in real conversations between families of infants and toddlers and home visitors. The global pandemic has dramatically reshaped public discourse, with social media emerging as a pivotal platform for these discussions. This study delves into evolving sentiments, emotions, and prevalent topics in online discussions spanning the years 2020, 2021, and 2022, drawing from a dataset of 2.65 million tweets from the Twitter Platform. A multifaceted approach that combines quantitative and qualitative methods are developed for dissecting evolving discourses, with a particular focus on the lens of nationalism. The quantitative part disassembling sentiment & emotion, topics, and Co-Occurrence Network yields a nuanced understanding of the textual content. A qualitative theoretical analysis named Evolving Discourse Framework Analysis are designed to unravel the textual discourse. Study results in the development of an adaptable framework. Findings expose nationalist orientations and the framing elements present within online public discourse, which are categorized into three distinct frames: 'feeling,' 'identity,' and 'action.' Importantly, the 'feeling' frame interconnects with the 'identity' frame, ultimately shaping responses within the 'action' frame. The frames shine a light on a complex and interconnected web of nationalist narratives that exist within the online sphere, subtly influencing public opinion and behavior. This study serves as a reminder that beneath the surface of seemingly unified global discourse, there exists a segmented world, ripe for further exploration and understanding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adult learners are a significant proportion of distance learners and many of these students are working mothers. Several instructional design models center the learner, and this requires understanding the learner needs, strengths, and context. There is a gap in the literature describing the experience of modern working mother students in distance education. To understand this experience, the researchers interviewed and observed six academically high-achieving working mother students as they participated in their distance education courses during the pandemic. A discourse analysis approach was utilized to analyze the data. This extreme sample revealed several strategies that these students used to be successful despite their challenges. The findings suggest that understanding the experiences of distance learners as they study in the home are important for effective course design. More specifically, working mothers face significant distractions in their study environments, but the cognitive load can be reduced by making use of their prior knowledge, scaffolding instruction, and encouraging social presence. Purpose: To evaluate the language used in screening instruments employed by physicians and other health care providers to determine whether a patient is a victim of IPV. Method: We employed Critical Discourse Analysis, including a three-step iterative coding process, to analyze the language used in 40 text- and computer-based screening tools. Results: We found many screening tools contain language that may reinforce the power imbalance inherent in the physician–patient relationship through discourse that denies patient agency, echoes violent imagery with terms that are inherently violent themselves, and reduces the patient to a depersonalized object of a care provider's actions. Conclusions: The choice of language used in screening instruments that guide physicians' interactions with patients is crucial, particularly in evaluating patients for intimate partner violence. Violence between intimate partners can be exacerbated by an imbalance in power in a personal relationship. When language mimics that power imbalance in the exam room—a place where patients may already feel diminished agency—the potential arises that a patient will be reluctant to disclose IPV. The Farm to Fork (F2F) Strategy at the heart of the European Union's Green Deal set out to create a "just transition" towards a sustainable food system, with benefits for all actors. We conducted a critical discourse analysis (CDA) to explore discourses around power in the food system and farmers' position in the communication and implementation of the Farm to Fork Strategy. Discourse analysis encapsulates various scientific methodologies for deciphering the meaning behind the creation and communication of different forms of language and identify power dynamics, amongst other aspects. We identified two prior discourses in one of the objectives of the European Union's new Common Agricultural Policy (2023-27). Our analysis found that the discourses, namely "rebalance power in food system" and "strengthening farmers' position in value chains," are marginalized in favour of an innovation-investment discourse, indicative of greater financialization and technologization based on techno-finances fixes in transforming the European Union agri-food system. We argue that entities representing agri-business interests have been influential in the policymaking process and voices representing smallholder and medium-sized farmers' transformational discourses have been excluded. Conventional gender analysis of development policy does not adequately explain the slow progress towards gender equality. Our research analyses the gender discourses embedded in agricultural and rural development policies in Myanmar and Nepal. We find that both countries focus on increasing women's participation in development activities as a core gender equality policy objective. This creates a binary categorisation of participating versus non-participating women and identifies women as responsible for improving their position. At the same time, gender (in)equality is defined exclusively as a women's concern. Such discourses, as constitutive practices, produce specific knowledge about rural women and new subjectivities that prescribe and govern them solely as subjects of development. Our research suggests that such a limited discursive practice invisiblises gendered power relations and structural and institutional issues, ultimately slowing progress towards gender equality. We demonstrate the importance of studying policy as discourse, beyond the effectiveness of policies or mainstreaming tools, and call for empirical evidence on the impact of these discourses on women's subjectivities and lived experiences. Water resource managers contend with and leverage uncertainty in complex decision-making processes. Uncertainty has passive characteristics (context and type), but it is also actively deployed and leveraged by stakeholders via framing and discourse. These passive and active elements of uncertainty interact with each other to shape discourse, which has direct consequences for policy, especially when uncertainty is invoked to delay action in addressing pressing environmental challenges. We explore the interactions of active and passive elements of uncertainty management in a water management decision-making process in the water-limited US state of Arizona. Project ADD Water was intended to engage stakeholders in dialogue about securing water resources under existing state water management policy. Understanding how uncertainty influenced Project ADD Water has only become more important as water management under prolonged drought becomes increasingly complex in Arizona and other similar sites. In the Project ADD Water deliberations, we found examples of both disruptive and productive efforts to frame different types of uncertainty, and we use illustrative examples to explore their relevance to the policy-making process. In addition to our analysis of how stakeholders engage with uncertainty through this process, we also contribute a codebook for holistically examining uncertainty in natural resource decision-making processes beyond ADD Water and materials to structure workshops with stakeholders centered on exploring uncertainty. Our contributions strengthen our understanding of how stakeholders deploy uncertainty in decision-making processes and offer a pathway to facilitate discussions about uncertainty with stakeholders. The need for immediate communication in a world characterized by an ever-increasing flow of information has led to a rapid increase in volunteer translation in recent decades. While previous studies have focused on aspects such as volunteer translators' motivation and the attendant ethical issues of voluntary translation, comparatively little research has explored the phenomenon from a discursive perspective. The research reported in this article explored the discursive construction of the volunteer translator in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) active in Spain using critical discourse analysis. Drawn from analysis of 25 semi-structured individual interviews with volunteer translators in five different NGOs, the findings reveal that volunteer translators are seen either as an agent and actor of social change who facilitates communication and possesses a strong sense of identity and social status, or as someone who is interfering in a sector traditionally limited to professional translators and who consequently has a weaker sense of identity and social status. This suggests that the role of the volunteer translator currently lacks definition, and that further research is needed to better understand the relationship between volunteer and professional translators in the 21st century. Academic labor has expanded beyond the walls of academic institutions. Academics are expected to communicate with students online, use digital tools to complete their work, and share their research with broad audiences—often through online spaces like social media. Academics also face technology-facilitated violence and abuse (TFVA) in these same spaces. When this happens, employers have a responsibility to protect and support workers. However, recent events have shown that universities are not always prepared to do so. We use data from a discourse analysis of harassment and discrimination policies and interviews with university managers (including Vice President Academics/Provost, Faculty Deans, and directors of human rights offices) to examine how prepared Canadian universities and colleges are to support academics targeted by TFVA. We found that institutions are unprepared in three ways: first, they focus on physical safety over non-contact harms; second, they envision perpetrators to be named, local, and part of the campus community; and third, the reporting process is cumbersome and outpaced by the speed and frequency with which TFVA occurs. We consider these findings in the context of work-overflow and context collapse to demonstrate how the institutional apparatus for maintaining a safe and respectful working environment has not expanded in kind with the extensification of contemporary academic labor. Within psychology and criminology research, violence between partners has often been approached from the perspective of victimization and the risk of recidivism. Many countries confirmed the societal nature of domestic violence while calling for a retributive justice model. However, the effectiveness of this type of policy has been challenged by research that has highlighted the limited effectiveness of punishment. Identifying the desistance process, which is still in development, is paramount, especially in intimate partner violence. This qualitative study analyse the process of ending the violence at work of 13 male perpetrators of partner violence. Through semi-structured interviews and a "life course" perspective, including a qualitative life history timeline, a thematic analysis of the discourses allowed the creation of an eight-step exit process model: (1) history of violence and development of relational scripts; (2) divergent expectations between partners; (3) understanding the violent event; (4) the attribution of responsibility; (5) the escalation of violence; (6) reassessment of oneself and the couple; (7) intrasubjective changes; (8) the development of strategies to end the violence. Moreover, the results showed two types of desistance processes anchored in life histories. We will discuss the modeling of exit processes from partner violence and, particularly, its implications for intervention with perpetrators. Thus, in order to promote the rehabilitation of perpetrators of violence between partners, stakeholders in the legal and therapeutic fields must be able to support the processes of desistance by adjusting intervention strategies based on the dynamics of violence and the exit trajectories from intimate partner violence. The European Union's common agricultural policy (CAP), in addition to its primary production and farm income goals, is a large source of funding for environmentally friendly agricultural practices. However, its schemes have variable success and uptake across member states (MS) and regions. This study tries to explain these differences by demonstrating differences between policy levels in the understanding of the relationship between nature and farming. To compare constructs and values of the respective policy communities, their discursive construction as it appears in the main strategic EU and MS agricultural policy documents is analysed. The theoretical framework integrates elements from existing frameworks of CAP and environmental discourse analysis; specific agri-environmental discourses, their elements and interplay, are identified. The six discourses suggested here are 'Productivism', 'Classical neoliberal', 'Ecological modernisation', 'Administrative', 'Multifunctionality' and 'Radical green'. The discourse analysis of selected documents reveals that there are indeed differences in how farming and the environment are generally conceptualised at different levels of CAP decision-making. At EU level, farming is primarily understood as a sector whose main task is to produce food ('Productivism'), and the environment is used as a justification for CAP payments ('Multifunctionality'). At the national/regional level, Rural Development Programmes reflect different value systems: in England, environmental protection is mainly seen as sound management of natural capital ('Classical neoliberal'); in Finland, a benefit for producers and conscious consumers ('Ecological modernisation'); in Croatia, a necessity limiting productivity ('Productivism') and imposed by an external authority ('Administrative' discourse). This diversity shows that differences can visibly manifest despite the Commission constraining the discursive space, helping to explain the differential implementation and success of environmental measures. Social media play a significant role in shaping and spreading societal views, including anti-vaccine sentiments that can undermine public health efforts. Understanding the extent of these views and predicting their future trends is challenging but essential. Social media posts, often semi-structured and laden with irony, are difficult to process with traditional methods. To address this, this study has developed a system to monitor the popularity of antivaccine misinformation and predict its future direction. A key feature of this research is the creation of a custom dataset. Instead of using a generic sentiment analyzer, Turkish tweets containing the word "vaccine" were collected and categorized to create a specialized data set. The collected data have been analyzed using several advanced deep learning networks, including different BERT architectures, LSTM, and BART. These models were trained on the categorized dataset to classify the remaining tweets. This classification provided a metric indicating the prevalence of anti-vaccine sentiment on social media. The output from the top-performing model was subsequently used to train and test a range of time series forecasting models, which included the naive forecaster, AutoARIMA, AutoETS, Croston's method, polynomial trend forecaster, unobserved components model, and Facebook's Prophet. The goal was to pinpoint the most effective algorithm for predicting the future trends of anti-vaccine sentiment. This research stands out for its dual focus on tracking and predicting public sentiment, providing a potential early warning system for public health authorities. The best results in the classification task were achieved by BERT base with F1 scores of 0.851, 0.731, 0.779, and 0.720 for each respective class, indicating its superior ability to capture and classify sentiment in the data. In the subsequent task of forecasting future trends, Prophet emerged as the top-performing model, demonstrating a mean absolute error of 6.01, signifying its accuracy in predicting anti-vaccine sentiment trends. The use of various deep learning networks for sentiment analysis, different forecasting models for trend prediction, and a custom-made dataset highlights this research's novelty in social media discourse analysis and prediction. Supporting sustainability requires understanding human–nature relations, which we approached as social constructions that can be studied through nature-related discourses. We examined human–nature relations in Finland by combining approaches from environmental social sciences and arts-based research into a mixed-methods design. A public online survey (n = 726) and post-performance audience interviews (n = 71) portrayed nature positively. Respondents' ideas of nature ranged from natural scientific to philosophical; from dualistic to holistic; and from ecocentric to anthropocentric. A factor analysis revealed discourses focusing on wellbeing, conservation, ecoanxiety, pro-environmentalism, outdoor activity, and enjoying nature. Interviews added spiritual and over-generational aspects and revealed the importance of embodied experiences in nature relations. We identified dimensions that structure the relations, including human–nature positionality, engagement and contact with nature, and conception and thought. The emotional and experiential aspects, and nature-related practices, deserve further research. We demonstrate how a diversity of human–nature relations co-exists and co-evolves. Knowledge Building principles such as real ideas, authentic problems; epistemic agency; and collective responsibility for advancement of community knowledge convey ways in which Knowledge Building mirrors work in knowledge-creating communities. Previous studies suggest Metadiscourse—discourse about discourse—helps sustain and improve community knowledge. Do students' emotions differ during metadiscourse compared to other discourse contexts? Is metadiscourse even possible in early elementary grades? If so, what emotions are associated with discourse moves requiring high-level reflection on prior discourse? Is it possible that such reflection engenders positive emotions required for sustained creative work with ideas? To address these issues, the authors engaged 22 grade 2 students (7 years old) in monthly metadiscourse sessions over four months, during which they discussed how their ideas changed, what they still wondered about, and what ideas they wanted to pursue. Video recordings of face-to-face sessions, online Knowledge Forum notes, students' interviews, teacher's reflections, and field notes were analyzed using discourse analysis, multi-faceted coding, and correlation analysis. The authors examined how students' emotions and discourse moves differ in Knowledge Building discourse and metadiscourse and correlations between emotions and different discourse moves. The results show: (1) greater levels of enjoyment, reflection on previous ideas, and proposals for new directions for inquiry during metadiscourse sessions; (2) confidence positively associated with explanations and proposals for new directions for inquiry; (3) positive emotions associated with increasingly challenging cognitive work. The relationships between early elementary-grade students' emotions and cognition during Knowledge Building is an underdeveloped area of investigation; in an effort to guide future research a model for regulating emotions in Knowledge Building is presented.
